I've also hit up Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve. While I like Woodford Reserve bourbon better than Buffalo Trace's regular bourbon, I did like the tour at Buffalo Trace better. Buffalo Trace just seemed more laid back while Woodford Reserve seemed more commercial and "slick".

My wife uses Buffalo Trace bourbon cream for her coffee creamer.

I was up in Roanoke and they had a bourbon bar. I tried a bunch and one of my favorites was a rye.
I think I will get one next time.
Rye has made a huge comeback, for reasons that are unknown. All of a sudden it's just hugely popular. Personally, I'm not a huge rye fan, though I'll have it in a Manhattan every now and then.
I'll happily drink yours. I prefer my bourbons to be a higher rye mashbill as well.

I prefer wheaters. Only bottle of straight rye I have on the shelves is a bottle of Sazerac rye that I haven't gotten around to trying.
Me too. The rye is just a bit too smokey for me.

Not sure who posted it but thanks for the recommendation of Larceny. Pretty good. I recently picked up a bottle of Angel's Envy. That is really good IMO.

Bulleit is awesome and not expensive. Basil Hayden doesn't get enough love. That's a high quality product.
I agree on both.

Pappy 23 is my all-time favorite - I've owned all the Pappy/Van Winkle line (other than the incredibly rare 25 they found and released not long ago) back before the craze got too out of control. The closest store to me here in Georgia always has Blanton's while nobody else seems to and that's been my favorite attainable one these days, but Angel's Envy is right up there with it! Not a bourbon, but Crown XO is a really good one to drink on the rocks - it used to be Cask No 16 and went off the market for a couple years and re-released as XO. Most people don't think about Crown as being sipping whisky, but the XO is! Col EH Taylor is another good one not many people pay attention to yet, but it's a Buffalo Trace one!

Big fan of EH Taylor small batch. I've got a few bottles of the single barrel as well, but prefer the small batch. It's always interesting how certain things sell well in certain areas. Around me, Eagle Rare doesn't seem to sell out as quickly as other Buffalo Trace products do, which is great for me because I like it a lot.

I'm working on my MBA, My master's of bourbon appreciation, here at a local bar. After I try and take notes on 35 different bourbons.

Working through the list slowly maybe 1-2 every couple of weeks. It's a very nice place, pricey though. Their well bourbon is Woodford Reserve.

Anywho I have been working through the list slowly. Did the Maker's Mark last time. My first makers and dam if it wasn't delicious. Also tried the Angel's Envy and it was ok. I'll try to post on here if I try anything special.

Got a bottle of Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit up n VA a few ago.. that is a fine bourbon.
I think the ryes are coming back as they are not quite as sweet at Bourbons.

Loved the Prohibition one.

Found a bottle of Blantons going through VA a few weeks ago. Going to have a few tonight leading in to the Cuse game

I've done some recent travelling and was able to pick up the following bottles:

Rowan's Creek
Noah's Mill
Col. EH Taylor Small Batch, and also Single Barrel

The Noah's Mill is 114 proof, which is a little strong for my taste. I preferred the Rowan's Creek; a lot smoother at 100 proof.
Though I suppose adding a few drops of water to the Noah's Mill would cut it a bit?

Along those lines... I've found that my current "zone of preference" is from 90 to 96 proof, it seems.
Anyway...

The Col. EH Taylor lines are excellent.

Another question for those who have decided to cut back from time to time (for whatever reasons):
Around the middle of last year I decided to cut out beer (for calorie purposes). Where I would once have a craft beer or three most every evening, I switched over to having a bourbon or two. For several months that was my routine just about every night, or at least 5-6 days a week.

I eventually scaled that back to only having a drink maybe 1-2 nights a week (mainly due to a busier schedule, kids, etc. etc.).
Anyhow, I've now found that if I do have 2-3 glasses of bourbon on a given night, it often has an adverse effect on my stomach/digestion the next morning.... whereas before, when I was having a glass or two every night, that wasn't the case.
I'm assuming it's simply a matter of my stomach no longer being conditioned to the effects of the liquor?...

(And yeah, I know: "the answer is to drink more bourbon!" LOL)

On the bright side, since I've cut way back over the past 4-5 months, I now have a sturdy collection of probably 15-20 good bottles/brands in my cabinet that should last quite some time.
The above listed ones, plus a couple of Blanton's, Four Roses, Elijah Craig's, Basil Hayden, etc.
If I stick to only have some 1-2 days a week max, I'm good to go.

Got back from Vegas on Sunday. Lee's Liquor Mart in Summerlin had a bottle of Pappy 23 for $2,499. A little too steep for me (by a little, I mean about $2,400 too much). Did get a bottle of Willet Pot Still Reserve. Found it in Tennessee last February and haven't been able to get my hands on it since. Also got a bottle of the Milagro Reserve Collection Blanco tequila. Such a good sipping tequila. Tried a few other tequilas that I haven't seen in this area and they were good but nothing too noteworthy.

Ate at Carbone inside Aria. Talked to the bartender and their Rum Ambassador for a bit. Aria has their own Weller collection that they get. Couldn't tell a huge difference between that and the regular Weller 12 but was still good. Also, Carbone has the largest Rum selection in Vegas. The Rum Ambassador let me try a Foursquare Zinfadel 11 year rum that was amazing. Probably one of the top 5 spirits I've had. Also thought it was interesting that on the casino floor, if you want bourbon you get Jim Beam or Jack Daniels. But if you want tequila, you get Patron or Herradura. I went with tequila for my roulette and blackjack adventures.

I recently tried 3 moderate level types of bourbon and did my own taste test:
- George Dickel Superior 12
- Makers 46
- Jim Beam Black

My personal order GD12, JBB, M46

I also enjoy the 4 Roses stuff.

I wish that we could get delivery of whiskey from some of those whiskey clubs to NC

I used to get some from one but a couple of years ago, something changed and now you can't get delivery to NC

Angel's Envy -- opinions?

I've seen some on the shelf, but it's pricey. Wanted to see if anyone thought it was worth it.

thanks

Angel's Envy is quite good IMHO. It has been quite awhile since I tried it at a restaurant, but I remember thinking it needed to be on my approved list for future purchase. I just never got around to it.

I order whiskey online quite a bit and I live in NC. Not sure if that's what you mean though by a whiskey club. I order from Ace Spirits, Mission Liquor, and Bourbon Street Wine and Spirits.

Rowan's Creek is one of my favorites as is Colonel Taylor.

I agree on Noah's Mill, I put a drop of water in it to open it up or get it on the rocks and wait a bit.

Everyday, I'll go with Basil Hayden or Buffalo Trace.

I also like willet. Basically if it's bourbon, I like it.

Aight, finally found the Bourbon thread, after my attempt at turning one of the Premium threads into a Bourbon thread. My takes:

I love Buffalo Trace...especially for $30 when you can find it around here.
Angels Envy, Basil Haydens, Breckenridge, and most recent Blade and Bow...all very good with a cigar.
Also, there is a line out of Tullahoma, TN...Barterhouse is freaking delicious, had it at my cuz's house in NJ/NY, but can't ever find it here. I bought one of the other ones and I'm not a fan.
I'll have to go see what else is on my shelf downstairs later.

Picked up a bottle of Rebel Yell 10 year single barrel. First bottle I've bought in a few months since I've been in my self imposed moratorium on buying new stuff (my collection is around 90 bottles and I've been trying to put a dent into some of it before accumulating again). I picked one up last year and it was good (it's not worth $66, but nothing is these days). There are so few well aged wheater style bourbons that are available because of the PVW craze, and that happens to be my favorite style. May get into this weekend and see how it compares to last year's. I'll try to do better at paying attention to this thread and answering any questions folks have.
