Rangers clinch the President's Cup last night, so the Canes are locked into playing the Islanders in the first round of the playoffs. Most likely Saturday with the first 2 games at the PNC. Same match up from last year's opening round which the Canes won 4-2.

Had the Rangers lost last night, the Canes would have had a chance to clinch home ice for all the playoffs with a win over Columbus. If the Canes advance, then they will face the winner of the Rangers/ Wild Card series. It could be Washington, Detroit, Pittsburgh, or Philadelphia.

Quite a comeback win for the Canes last night. Had to be crazy inside the arena when the Canes tied it and took the lead in 9 seconds.

Here is the condensed game.

That last 5 minutes of game action had to be as tense and then as fun, as it gets.

I tuned it out when it went 0-3, but then I saw all these texts from my sons that we were back in it
Turned it on with 3 minutes to go and those back to back goals - you could most certainly hear the energy in the building - it was impressive to hear that explosion of noise

I know pro athletes are good at moving on, but gotta think it's really difficult for the Islanders to get back up for the next game after that choke job

im expecting to see pyotr for game 5 in raleigh tomorrow night. freddie hasn't done anything wrong but i think rod will give him a rest and see what PK does.

Canes have some big decisions to make this offseason and depending on the severity of pesce' injury, it might have brought him back to our price point. step 1 is finding a trade partner for KK to free up some cap but our defense could look really different next year.

if they were going to go to Pyotr it would've been Saturday. You're not going to throw your backup in there with the possibility of having to go back to Long Island if you lose. It's Freddie's net for at least the rest of this series

Yeah there's not a person at PNC that wants any part of a 3-2 series with the Isles having momentum and going back to Long Island with a chance to tie the series up.

Do everything you can to end it.

Do you want the Hurricanes to end it tomorrow night? Absolutely but if it stretches out that may be better in the long run. Rangers might be getting healthy, but they will also be getting rusty. Not playing for 6 to 7 day or more is not ideal. The Canes lost last year in a sweep after beating NJ in 5. Panthers lost last year in a sweep after sweeping Carolina. In 2019, the Canes lost in a sweep after sweeping the Islanders. Long layoffs usually lead to poor starts. Might be enough to beat the Rangers in one of the games at MSG.

One addition to this, in case it's unclear: Waddell added that Pesce might not be ready for the start of the series.

DeAngelo is OK. X-rays negative. Pesce is out of a walking boot and is expected to "play games in this round."

One more thing from the Waddell availability: Jesper Fast is in a neck brace and will be evaluated in a couple weeks. Scans revealed he had suffered a muscle injury in the final regular season game in Columbus.
