Washington was up 2-0 in the first period. One on the PP and another goal that Kochetkov had no chance on. Canes came back with a goal by Burns in the second to make it 2-1. Dmitri Orlov was playing his first game back in D. C. since he was traded to Boston last year and they gave him a very nice video presentation and ovation during one of the time outs. Early in the 3rd, he took the puck from behind his net all the way to behind the Cap's net, got an assist when Seth Jarvis scored. Orlov also had a shorthanded empty net goal late in the game for a 2 point night.
Aho and Svech are still scorching. They have combined for 29 points in the last 6 games with each having multi point games in all 6. Svech had a goal and two assists and Aho had 3 more assists.
Good story of the night...The Canes were missing three starters tonight. Fast is out with a concussion, Noesen was sick, and Necas suffered an injury yesterday in practice. The Canes had to recall Vasily Ponomarev from Chicago today. He got to D. C. about 5 pm and just made the first meeting. Canes had to go with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen tonight and it was Ponomarev's first NHL game. He got an assist on the Jarvis goal too, then scored late in the game for his first two NHL points. The first NHL game he saw was in that arena about 7 years ago as he watched the Caps and the Penguins play. He had a dream to be like Crosby and Ovechkin and that dream came true tonight. Rod said he had a really good camp but then got injured, so not sure if he sticks or not when the others are back.
