The new tiered high tops located field level in the new area down the 1st base line looked really nice. I wanted to go down and take a look, but was told by an attendant that is a 'VIP area' and that it is sold out for the season. Anyone know anything about this area?

It's a very limited area, email went out a few weeks back to top level WPC season ticket donors. They required you to buy a minimum of four seats and that those tickets must be scanned 80% of games or they will forfeit the right to those seats.

Wow, requiring a min of four seats w/ 80% usage rate seems extreme to me!

They need to require this for Football and MBB

I think we have to wait until Phase III to see.

Imbedded the link twice on accident, but reminded me of this from last week.

The original renderings vs the end product are night and day different. I always felt the original looked like a bunch of tailgate tents dow the right field line. The final design of multi-level seats with tabletop counter is a much better idea IMHO.

The original design called for a large cover over the upper area deck. Unless they come in at the last minute, that also seems to have changed, as no structure to support a cover of any tpe appears to be in the works. If that is the case, that will be very disappointing!

The entire mezzanine should have a cover like that.

Agreed! I was there for the Saturday game vs BC. It was in the 70s, but sitting in the direct sun, it felt like the 90s! I sat in my seat for about three innings and that was all I could take. I spent the next few innings bouncing around the stadium in search of shade where I could also watch the game (with a partial view of field at best). I left in the 7th as I simply couldn't take the heat anymore. And again, the actual air temps were in the 70s. This is why I sell all my tickets for Sunday conference games.

I know there are many in attendance who love the sun, and who will scoff at this position, but the fact that we have so few shade options at the Doak is just a travesty! And frankly, the fact that we were sold a fundraising vision of stadium enhancements that finally included shade options, only to have it excluded from the final product is just unacceptable! Someone in the Athletics office needs to explain this to the donors!

The easiest explanation for the lack of shade is that whoever is coming up with these plans has never actually attended a game. I imagine its more difficult to add shade over actual seats but how hard can it be to add shade over the concourses?

Too lazy to go back and look in this thread but I think they'd have to get really creative on the engineering to add shade to the stands. Something about the offices or rooms underneath the stands.

There are so many ways they could add more shaded areas.

The cheapest and easiest way would be simply to build a 6-10 ft facade wall straight up above the current offices down the 1st base side. They could use it for some highly visible "NC State Baseball" branding, which would not only look great on TV, it would help cast a shadow on the concourse and seats down the 1st base side so much quicker. Think of the impact that a taller Vaughn Towers had on the West Side upper deck shadows for football.

Another relatively inexpensive approach would be to install triangular shaped fabric shades along the concourse. They could be anchored from the offices, restroom/concession building, press box and the large poles that support the safety netting.

Great article here about How Shade Structures Enhance the Fan Experience.

This is not a hard problem to solve. The University simply needs to make it a priority!
