Y'all are correct regarding Southern National. They still have races there but the schedule has tapered off the last few years to only a handful of events. The Thanksgiving Classic is still a big event and they've hosted a few Cars Tour late model events. But, the seasonal racing has basically dwindled to nothing.

Wake County is always fun.

Another good venue is New River All American in Jacksonville. I know it's a few hours for you guys but some good racing. The Cars Tour will be back there in March. That's always a good race.

Now that you mention it, I forgot about the Cars Tour running at SNS. Do you know if it's car count or is it a promotion thing with SNS?

Ownership. Dude puts it out there that he's trying so hard to get racers to come but the bottom line is he's just an ass and people don't like going there.
Interesting.
That is interest. Good info WP
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

I don't know how else to explain it. I've dealt with him a few times in the last 10 years. It's 50/50. You never know what you'll get from him.

He tries to promote it but nothing ever works. Place is always dead unless it's the Cars Tour or the Thanksgiving Classic, which only had 24 Late Models I believe. That ain't good for that race.

New River and Carteret aren't too far away I'm sure that hurts. I don't know how else to explain it.

I went all the time as a kid in the early to mid 90's. Went back from 2017 to 2023 as much as I could. Just dead.

In general car counts aren't great in this area. I know NASCAR and some promotors are trying to work out a deal , that tracks have the same specs and rules, to help the teams. I've also been told, that some promotors are trying to not race on the same night, as to not effect car counts. I know Wake dropped the Mod 4's a couple of years ago due to low car counts each week.

Yep it's unfortunate. Just not enough doing it anymore to support all the racetracks in this area.

Southern National gets me though. New River has the upper hand in the area now for some reason after being closed for several years. Carteret had passed them by as well but I'm not sure that's the case any longer.

He definitely does the big money stuff to try and get them there. I'll give him that. Maybe it just the inconsistency with the schedule. Hard for drivers to be loyal to a place that only opens once a month. I think he lives out of state. That's got to be difficult.

The car count at all of these tracks is the biggest issue. It's becoming so darn expensive to field a car and the payouts are basically what they were 5 or 10 years ago....unless it's one of the "big" races.

The tracks have tried to work together over the years by not scheduling races on the same weekend, etc but that ends up not being all that feasible. All these tracks are lobbying for the same cars and the drivers just can't afford to be somewhere every weekend. Therefore, they end up picking a few races here and there and before you know it, car counts are down.

Also, these tracks are not run by the best promoters these days. Some are terrible at promoting, others are terrible at actually running a business and some are just plain buttholes. Whatever the reason, the drivers are tired of the crap and the way the tracks are being run. This isn't true of all tracks but it's affecting all of them and driving the majority away.

Sounds like everyone is going after the same car. And yes, cost is very high.

I can't speak to SNS or New River, I know WCS has lobbied for some of this stuff, same rules, and working out some thing to not be walking on each other shoes. Just seems like the cars aren't there. There is a guy named Pete Pistone, who does some side work about the state of short track racing. Pretty eye opening.

Flipping channels yesterday afternoon, and settled in on about the last 25 laps of the inaugural Brickyard 400 (1994) on FS1's greatest NASCAR races... Gordon hunting down the #28 Robert Yates Texaco Havoline Ford.

Thought for sure as I was watching that it was still Davey Allison, but it turned out to be Ernie instead... Gordon got by him with about 18 left, but Irvan got him back a couple of laps later. Gordon was going by him again with less than 10 left and then Irvan blew a tire out and it was over.

Takes a long time for the NASCAR guys to get around that track. Had a Daytona race on next, and it just seemed like they got around it much quicker than at Indy.

I remember back in the mid to late 70's Wilson County would run their LMS "Southern 200" in mid November. there would be cars from NC, SC, Va, Fla, and Ga. All for maybe a $2,500 top prize. I know it's a different era but it was still a big draw and there wasn't a touring division for LMS back then. Dad would race at Wake County on Friday night and then Wilson County on Saturday night

That seemed to be more common back then. Now, only a few run at multiple tracks.

I've never been a dirt track guy but am open to it. My family were engine builders and had a car that ran at Wilson County years ago. That was before my time. I came along as asphalt gained in popularity so its really all I've been around.

I know the dirt tracks are still very popular. Do they face the same issues?

From my understanding and talks with folks, simple answer is no. Now, I have seem some reports that World of Out Laws and Kyle Larson's series, could merge. Heck, even this year, the Snow Ball Derby had one of it's lowest car count in years, 6 days of practice plus the cost of tires, and you are looking at 20,000 or north if that.

I tried to go to dirt tracks but wearing contacts at a dirt track just is a no go. I hate wearing glasses. my vision sucks so I need something....so I just stick to paved tracks lol

That coat is cool and old. The series was called Grand National up to 1971. Then Winston Cup Grand National up to 1986

Got this book for Christmas, for the folks that like the history of the sport, and like short stories, this is a good one.
