My Dad and I spent many Saturday nights at Wilson County Speedway. When we were behind a pickup truck with a race car trailer coming south on 301, you could count on the race truck turning into the ABC store Liquid courage.

Yeah, if Farmer John had a problem, the racetrack would often accommodate him. I remember once he had a transmission failure and they literally stopped the race while his crew thrashed under the car to replace it. Good times!

Whether my Dad was racing or we were watching our trip included a stop at Parker's. After he stopped racing we'd sit on the top row right beside the announcers booth. Dad got to be good friends with Jim Rochelle, the track announcer. We had known James Jones, Cliff Winstead, Snapper Capps and Nick Gwaltney for years. Nick was related to us by marriage.

Rochelle moved on to doing track announcing at Southern National and he called me when my Dad passed away in 95 and said they were going to do a "missing man" salute to him during one of the sportsman class races and I got to attend. That was a very nice gesture.

Snapper Capps, is that any relation to the Ron Capps that raced at Wake until here recently when mod 4s got the boot?
Not sure. Snapper died many, many years ago. He was the flagman for the track. Cliff was one of the pit stewards. Also owned a restaurant called Cliff's Drive In. James Jones raced but he had a financial interest in the track as did Nick.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

I mean….zero chance nascar can fill that whole place up….and other than it being start/finish. That's really one of the worst seats in the house. Really hard to see much of anything at that place

I get it. But bad look when your start finish has tarps. Our sport sells the start finish and interacting with the fans. And I agree, no way we sell that place out.

It's iconic. I did the double during the 100th Indy 500. Couldn't see anything then either. Haha. It's cool to do once or twice. Then the reality sets in. But i would love for every race in Indy to go down at IRP

It's all good. I've never been. Did IRP and NASCAR ever come to terms? For the record, I no problem with Indy.

Whoever hits that setup right can be very dominant on that track.
