In a strange coincidence, I met this dude at the Vandy-Stanford elimination game in Omaha. Seemed like a great guy from the short 3 minute conversation we had. I wouldn't have ever guessed he would be working at State before the summer ended.

Expect a couple more incoming transfers

To clarifying- pretty sure they are expecting atleast 1 more that should be considered an impressive transfer. Keeping tabs on a couple others but nothing in stone

Looks like the cat is out of the bag (see James post).

Things are starting to sort themselves out, my guess-

C- Mitchell/Godman. Mitchell if he is on campus. I think Tresh signs, and while Cozart is the future, think we go with an older guy.
1st- Groover- pretty easy choice
2nd- JT- Lock
SS- Hood- Lock if he is on campus
3rd- White- IMO a lock in the lineup. I could see him at DH if his glove isn't there yet.
OF- Dom P- Cloes to a lock
OF- Sam Hall- I think he narrowly beats out Soles/Truitt b/c of experience
OF- D Brown- Lock
DH- Shot in the dark, but I am going Eisert/Truitt. Think they have the most upside.

But, lots and lots of variables with this group. Avent with have 6 different lineups in the first 5 games

Looks pretty close. But may be Green at SS, Hood at 3rd and White at DH. Unless I've missed that Green/Hood aren't going to make it. Know neither is set is stone but seems to be trending that way.

Agreed, I can see that for sure. Green might be too good to not play. That should work for White too, DH for a year, reshape the body, 3rd for 2 years. Green moves from 3rd to SS assuming he doesn't outgrow it

Found a link with some commits stats and all state teams- not sure who will contribute and who wont, but I will post some numbers. Everyone on the roster next year except that sophomore.

1st team

P/UTL: Jacob Dienes, Wake County Warriors (senior): NCSU recruit; .319 BA, 19 RBIs, 29 runs, 15 SBs; 1.29 ERA, 10-1, 1 save, 117 Ks, .104 OBA. (LHP)

P/UTL: Carson Kelly, Lee County (senior): NCSU recruit; .585 BA, 24 hits, 13 RBIs, 6 doubles, 2 HRs, 16 runs; 0.35 ERA, 87 Ks in 39.2 IP. (RHP)

P/UTL: Garrett Moffett, Wayne Country Day (senior): NCSU recruit; .517 BA, 31 hits, 43 RBIs, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 11 HRs, 29 runs, 9 SBs; 0.67 ERA, 61 Ks in 31.1 IP. (RHP)

2nd team

INF: Brandon Crabtree, Grace Christian (Sanford) 3B (sophomore): NCSU recruit; .727, 40 hits, 53 RBIs, 11 doubles, 8 triples, 6 HRs, 39 runs, 20 SBs. (a sophomore that hit .727!!!! insane)

P: Brandon Hudson, Cuthbertson (senior): NCSU recruit; 1.75 ERA, 5-1, 69 Ks, 2 no-hitters. (RHP)

P/UTL: Win Scott, Ragsdale (senior): NCSU recruit; .435 BA, 20 hits, 17 RBIs, 3 HRs, 14 runs, 6 SBs; 1.94 ERA, 94 Ks in 47 IP, 1 perfect game, .166 OBA. (LHP. IMO he could be a sleeper in the class)

Honorable mention

Jacob Cozart, Wesleyan Christian (senior): NCSU recruit; .312, 15 hits, 10 RBIs, 3 doubles, 4 HRs.

OF: Carter Lindsay, A.C. Reynolds (senior): NCSU recruit; .333, 15 hits, 7 RBIs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 17 runs, 12 SBs.

Bummer on Tresh, but if we got Tucker Mitchell on campus, his bat will absolutely play. But Godman/Cozart is a good combo if not

When Justin Upton was going through this, Avent advised him to go to Louisburg for a year if he didn't sign. So he could go into the draft the year after.

BIG if here-

But, if we get Mitchell on campus with Godman, would would you prefer starts at catcher?

Seems like Mitchell is a + hitter with good defense, while Godman is a + defender thats a good hitter. Assuming Mitchell is atleast decent defensively, I think you go him. But Godman could be a difference maker too. Read he threw out 38% of runners last year

Mitchell no question, but hopefully State plays a backup catcher throughout the year

First time since never we'll have major depth with the field positions/batting. We've always been able to put together a solid starting lineup, with very few legit backups. This seems different, assuming everyone comes and there is little to no attrition going forward.

Seems like no-one is worried about pitching next year? I know that we have good starters returning but what about bullpen and depth? Are there any potential contributors among newcomers in pitching?

There are pitchers coming in, but we should return a ton of guys that will be contributors.

The Juco pitchers Logan Adams and Lawson were pretty bad in their college careers. I don't get recruiting them unless they see potential because they are tall. Don't think we need them next year anyway.

I went and looked at their stats and game logs. Logan had a 12 era at Charleston. A 3.80 at the juco but didn't get past 3 innings much in GS. I'll have to go back and check out Lawson but from what I remember his numbers weren't very good .
braz213

Lawson had 16 appearances and 10 starts last year and had a 7.58 era. In juco.

Lawson has stuff that can play. Going into this season he was a top 25 JUCO propsect. His question is can he throw strikes. 14.3 K/9 this year indicates good stuff, but 48 walks/HBP combined wont get it done.

Same with Widener, the 3rd JUCO arm. Big lefty, can throw hard, with plus stuff, can he throw strikes? Averaged I think 11k/9 but this summer he lead the coastal plains leagues in walks.

Logan Adams has more pitchability than the other 2, but probably not the pure stuff. He will get the most innings, IMO because he should be reliable enough to be decent.

They are high risk, high reward arms. If they come in, clean a couple things up and throw strikes, the stuff can play. If not, they'll get a handful of innings this year and move on. I will say, I agree with what you said regarding their JUCO numbers. Not exactly what you are looking for, but hopefully 1-2 can contribute

So? Both of those dudes have swing and miss stuff, like serious swing and miss stuff. Adams didn't walk a ton of dudes either. Lawson will need to work on the control but I have complete faith in Clint Chrysler as a pitching coach to correct any mechanics needed. Lawson struck out 70 dudes in 44 innings. While some of his issues were self inflicted (the walks) there was a game where his defense committed 3 errors that led to 4 unearned runs. Of course Lawson walked 5 as well. These guys aren't going to be starters at this level and will most likely work out of the pen. I wonder how those numbers would look out of the pen? Adams had 57 K's in 47 innings along with only 17 walks. His first 6 starts the kid gave up a total of 9 runs. In Adams 4th start he had a shutout going into the 7th with 10 K's and no walks. Unfortunately he was kept in a little too long it seems and gave up 3 runs in the 7th. There's a couple other instances like this for him too.

Dig into the numbers a little deeper and it tells more of the story. But also Avent and Chrysler wanted these dudes so I do too.

What do you mean so? Those aren't good. I hear y'all about digging deeper but as I pointed out, they didn't perform well in a lower league. They will definitely have to work on things but many pitchers come and go. I hope they figure it out.

You're box score watching on the surface. That's what I mean by "so". Logan Adams throws in the low to mid 90s and doesn't walk people. That should play out of the bullpen potentially as a/the closer. Justin Lawson has big time swing and miss stuff but his mechanics could be off, I've only seen one video of him and it was from a side angle so it's tough for me to discern anything there. These dudes aren't going to be asked to come in and be weekend starters from day 1.

You said you didn't "get" why we recruited them, well it's b/c they have talent and at least two of them are in the low to mid 90s, that I know of. Hard to coach that. I know the most about Adams and he's got some juice and throws strikes. I have all the faith in the world in Clint Chrysler and I don't understand questioning why we recruit kids but that's a "me" problem, and I know it.

I've also played enough baseball to know box scores don't tell the entire story.

They don't tell everything but they tell a lot. I like potential in a 17 18 year old kid. A guy not performing well at those levels is another thing. I've watched enough baseball and played enough fantasy sports to know a thing or two too. Like the other poster said. They figure it out or leave. Happens every year. Hopefully Chrysler helps them tremendously.
