Dale Earnhardt was never given enough credit as a road-course racer.

11 of his 12 starts at Sonoma were T12s, including one win and nine T10s.

From 1986-1996 he made 11 starts at Watkins Glen. He had three poles and eight T10s.

Add in 13 T5s in 20 Riverside starts and…
175 drivers have made at least 10 Cup Series starts on road-courses.

Dale has the:
12th best T5% out of all 175.
10th best T10% out of all 175.
8th most poles all-time

I believe it was '96, at Watkins Glen, he got in the car, sat on the pole, and finished 6th with a separated sternum, and broken collarbone. I believe, @DocPunchESPN was brought in to try and discourage Dale from driving, but he wasn't having it. #Ironhead
