.@NASCAR is tracking toward a significant increase over the average annual value of its current media rights deal ($820 million per year) by creating the new digital package and getting Fox and NBC to renew - @Ourand_SBJ

NASCAR midseason Cup Series package, Xfinity Series look likely to head to streaming

NASCAR appears likely to move its Xfinity racing series exclusively to a streaming company, according to several sources.

At least two companies have showed interest in that second-tier package. NASCAR also is shopping a midseason package of NASCAR Cup races to streaming companies, loosely patterned after the six-race package that TNT carried until 2014. Amazon is considered a strong candidate to land these streaming packages.

Nothing is close to being finalized, but sources predict that NASCAR will have handshake deals before the July 4 holiday on its new broadcast and streaming deals.

Ourand had discussed the midseason Cup Series package idea before, but many in the motorsports world were skeptical. Part of that is because teams there were already complaining about lowered sponsorship revenue, which would likely drop further still under the lessened reach of a streaming-only broadcast. However, there are ways to compensate for lessened reach if the rights contract value is high enough, which is why (for example) the NFL's Amazon Thursday Night Football deal and Peacock playoff game deal (both of which are bringing in huge premiums in rights fees relative to broadcast TV) are not the "disaster" Fox's Lachlan Murdoch (who has a strong stake in promoting broadcast TV and diminishing streaming) claims.

It's all about the numbers, and if a streamer is willing to pay a large enough premium to compensate for diminished reach, that can work. But it is notable that we're seeing quite a few sports teams and leagues take the opposite tack, accepting less money in order to gain reach. However, there's some crossover here to what the NFL has done too, with the games (often international series ones) and packages (Thursday Night Football) they've put exclusively on streaming being less-viewed ones in the first place.

I hate it anytime they make the Cup races harder to find... it's going to end up like it was a few years back where I never knew what channel it would be on and I always just ended up finding other sports available to watch on a Sunday afternoon...

Great to see them back racing at North Wilksboro. Me and my friends were there at the last race in '96 and to see the track come back to life is great.

Well, unfortunately yesterday's experience sucked for me.

Spent the afternoon waiting for Koepka to choke in the PGA, which didn't happen obviously... then decided that I'd watch the race in the bedroom sitting up in the adjustable. Turned it on, and apparently the Open race had just finished, spent about an hour watching the pre-race coverage and then the next thing I knew I woke up and the TV said 11:17PM and drag racing was on.

Didn't get to see most of the new paint schemes, didn't get to see the grid walk (which I can always do without listening to that imbecile anyway), didn't get to see the warm up laps - and didn't get to see the race obviously.

Last couple of things I remember were Gordon and Evernham being featured, then DW getting interviewed, and someone talking briefly to Erik Jones. That was it. Looking for a replay somewhere, but not seeing anything in the cards for today so far...

The open was much better than the all-star race but man, what a hell of a job they did with North Wilkesboro. I was at the last Rockingham race back in February 2004 and would love to see them head back there with something very similar. I wish I could of made it there last night!

I hope that happens too! Didn't the state set aside money $18 mil?? for race track renovations? I could totally have that wrong but that's the way I remember it at least.

I thought it was for N. Wilkesboro and Rockingham.

Someone correct me please.

I don't see Rockingham coming back. Neither SMI or NASCAR own that track. SMI owns North Wilksboro. As for the money you are correct, but local tracks also got money if they hosted a NASCAR sanctioned race. One other thing, Rockingham is now sitting sandwiched in between a lot of tacks, Marcus Smith hinted that a points race could be coming to North Wilksboro.

Well, having one back is better than none I guess. So, all Nascar sanctioned short tracks got some of that money too? I did not realize that. The Cars Tour had tried to get a race at Rockingham a couple of years ago but it never worked out, under McNellys ownership.

I know that my local track got a decent amount of money. There could be some other things that went into it as well.

.@FS1 got a 1.28 rating + 2.203 million viewers for Sunday's NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro, down from a 1.38 + 2.481 million last year at Texas.

FS1 ran a longer broadcast window this year with pre/post race coverage; for race-specific portion, FS1 was almost flat.
