@FS1 got a 1.30 rating and 2.303 million viewers for NASCAR at Richmond; last year was on @FoxTV (2.3/3.958M).

@NBC got 830,000 viewers for IndyCar at Texas, down from 954,000 last year.

@ESPN got 556,000 viewers for F1 in Australia, down from 568,000 last year

Why even have charters? Just let anybody go out and compete for a spot. I'm not sure I would even give a guaranteed slot for anyone. Now, I might would have multiple attempts of qualifying or something like that.

If the teams pulled out of NASCAR, then we could see another LIV type thing and hopefully, the series will get better. NASCAR needs competition in stock car racing.

Officials unveiled the format Thursday for the 2023 NASCAR All-Star Race, which will use a pit-crew challenge to set the starting lineups for qualifying heats, all ahead of a purposely no-frills main event to highlight the return of North Wilkesboro Speedway.
The invitational winner will be determined by 200 laps, with just a competition break at or around Lap 100. Both green-flag and caution laps will count, and overtime rules will be in effect.
Each team will start on new tires for the All-Star Race, and have three additional sets to use. After the competition break, only one additional set of new "sticker" tires can be used.

The more traditional feel of the race meshes with the rebirth of the historic 0.625-mile track, which will mark its first appearance on the NASCAR schedule since 1996 with the All-Star Race on May 21 (8 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM). Preliminary events include the return of the Craftsman Truck Series (May 20, 1:30 p.m. ET, FOX, MRN, SiriusXM), plus Late Model contests for the CARS Tour (May 17) and the ASA Stars National Tour (May 16).

No. These teams will find other places to spend money on. I mean some of these teams have multiple car engineers. The one thing that could help with cost is a spending cap. I believe that that's why NASCAR has told these teams a few times to cut cost, the teams aren't required to have 200 plus employees. And finally, the cars have never been "stock". It's a very interesting topic for sure with no easy answer.

From the people I have spoken with, the manufacturers did have a say in these cars, and also a lot of these parts cannot be modified,,, funny I type this after what happened this week. I say that a spending cap would work best. Kinda like how wind tunnel time works now.
But I agree the cost is high.

Charters specifically may not be the answer...but the teams have to have some kind of security. You wouldn't have a LIV type thing because its not a guy and his clubs. It's a guy with $10's of millions needed to sink into it. It's a scary thing for a race team owner to have to find millions of dollars in sponsorship just to break even.

I have watched numerous people come into the sport and spend themselves broke trying to keep up. It has literally killed two people I know including a very close friend. And that's not hyperbole. Those guys are dead. I'm not saying the sport as a whole hasn't been complicit in creating the problem of exorbitant budgets needed to run a race team...but there has to be some kind of security.


Agree. These owners need somewhat of a return on their investment.
Would changing the rules to more of the Stock Car type car help with cost?
No. These teams will find other places to spend money on. I mean some of these teams have multiple car engineers. The one thing that could help with cost is a spending cap. I believe that that's why NASCAR has told these teams a few times to cut cost, the teams aren't required to have 200 plus employees. And finally, the cars have never been "stock". It's a very interesting topic for sure with no easy answer.


I agree. Teams will spend money on all types of things. My question is more around the car expenses. They could get back to the manufacture having more input on the styling of the car, parts having to be sold in the parts department, etc…

There has to be a way to simplify the car in order to lower cost.


From the people I have spoken with, the manufacturers did have a say in these cars, and also a lot of these parts cannot be modified,,, funny I type this after what happened this week. I say that a spending cap would work best. Kinda like how wind tunnel time works now.
But I agree the cost is high.

Why even have charters? Just let anybody go out and compete for a spot. I'm not sure I would even give a guaranteed slot for anyone. Now, I might would have multiple attempts of qualifying or something like that.

If the teams pulled out of NASCAR, then we could see another LIV type thing and hopefully, the series will get better. NASCAR needs competition in stock car racing.
