Short of banning guns outright, which is fantasy, I don't know what gets us out of this bloody cycle, but I'm sure it's not any single thing. I'd like to see funding for more school security for certain. Universal background checks seem like a good idea on the face of it, although I don't know all the wrinkles. Better access to mental health care seems essential. Outlawing assault rifles, semiautomatics, and large magazines seems like a no brainer. Whatever the answer is, it isn't what we're doing now.
Dog this is not specifically directed at you, but your comment prompted my response.
I have for the most part stayed out of this conversation as the usual suspects are attacking everyone. I have see this comment several times in the news media and other outlets. I would like to preface that I am prior military and I have been using firearms all of my life.
There is no such thing as an Assault Rifle. Assault is an action. I can have an Assault Rock, Assault Knife, or Assault scissors. There are "Military Style" rifles that are commercially available and firearms that "look scary" but are not Military Grade. There are many folks that are out there that hear AR-15 and assume that the AR stand for Assault Rifle. It does not. It is short for ArmaLite Rifle. It is a popular shooting platform and several other firearms manufacturers have adopted the platform. Also, there is a large misconception as it relates to "Semiautomatic" firearms. All this means is that there is a mechanical replacement of the round. For instance, my 12 gauge shotgun is a semiautomatic firearm. Each time I pull the trigger, the spent shell is ejected and a new shell is inserted. This is the same for rifles and pistols. Full automatic is when you do not have to pull the trigger each time to have a new casing inserted.
Also there is a BIG misconception when it comes to fully automatic weapons. If you have ever fired a weapon on fully automatic mode, you know that the aim is TERRIBLE. All you are doing is wasting ammo. There is a reason that machine gunners are trained to fire in 3-5 round burst and the M4 and M16A2 rifles have "burst" and not full auto. Yes, semi automatic firearms can be converted to full automatic. However, this is difficult and can cause issues with the mechanical workings of the firearms.
This statement is in no way a meant to defend anything that happened. There is a lot of rhetoric out there right now and a lot of people who don't know what they are talking about that have loud mouths and platforms. I am truly outraged by what happened. There is no way this individual should have been able to carry out this heinous act. I told some friends at work when this happened that we are going to find out that many things in the system broke down that allowed this to happen. I also told them that I guarantee this individual was known by police and there is evidence of mental health issues. I don't believe that NEW laws are the right way to go. Like in many cases, we simply need to enforce the laws that we have. Don't punish law abiding citizens because criminals break the law. Just remember, when seconds matter, the police are only minutes away.
