The No. 12 NC State women's tennis team kicked off their ACC home-opening weekend with a 4-0 sweep of No. 37 Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

The match marked the 23rd meeting between the two programs, with the Wolfpack, extending its dominance 17-6 in the series.

The Wolfpack began with another strong performance in doubles play, clinching its sixth consecutive doubles point victory. Leading the charge was the No. 2 duo of Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo, who led over No. 60 Charlotte Cartledge and Ozlem Uslu, securing a 6-2 win marking their 10th dual-match victory of the season. In No. 3 doubles, Kristina Paskauskas and Michaela Laki rounded out the doubles sweep, extending their own streak to four straight wins with a 6-3 victory over Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles, the Wolfpack kept their momentum. Players, Maddy Zampardo, Gabriella Broadfoot, Kristina Paskauskas, and Mia Slama all claimed the first sets of their respective matches.

Freshman Mia Slama put on an impressive display, earning her fifth singles win of the season. After dropping just one game in the first set, Slama cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Laima Frosch, putting the Pack on the board.

Sophomore Gabriella Broadfoot also had a strong showing, taking the first set 6-1 and continuing her dominance in the second to claim a 6-1, 6-3 win over Semra Aksu of Virginia Tech, earning her seventh singles victory of the season.

On Court 2, No. 106 Maddy Zampardo turned in a solid performance, maintaining control of her match after winning the first set 6-2. Zampardo wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, securing her eighth singles win of the season and clinching the match for NC State.

The Wolfpack will now look ahead to its next challenge, as they return to Raleigh to host No. 2 Virginia on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 PM at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

I know most Pack fans are probably staying home to watch the women's basketball ACC tournament final, but for any coming out to the women's tennis match against #2 Virginia at 2:00pm today…a reminder that there is a home baseball game at 1:00pm. So you can only park in those lots immediately adjacent to the tennis stadium and behind the baseball stadium if you have a permit for baseball parking. The closest free parking (with no permit needed) is in the West Deck, only about a 3-4 minute walk to the tennis complex.

Massive win on "paper" because we "upset" the #2 ranked team in the country. But as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I thought Virginia should not have been ranked that high, and that we were better than them given our recent results versus common opponents (Michigan, SMU).

Looking ahead, NC State will gear up for a rivalry week with upcoming matches against the No. 10 ranked Duke Blue Devils on Friday, March 21 at 6:00 PM, and the No. 5 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Sunday, March 23 at 3:00 PM.

Tennis is my favorite NC State sport to follow right now (and for the past 3 years or so), and to attend events in person. For anyone who has never attended a college tennis match in person, you may be surprised at how electric the atmosphere can be, especially if there is a substantial crowd with the fans getting very vocal. The college format of having 3 doubles matches or 6 singles matches going on at the same time makes it "fast-paced" with a lot going on.

The men's team had a fairly big and very raucous crowd at their two home matches last weekend. I went to the one versus Cal, and it was a very good atmosphere. The head coach (and quotes from players and in the Technician article on the matches, etc) mentioned how good the crowd was and how much it helped them and that they appreciate the support.

The men's team has two home matches this coming weekend -- against defending ACC champion Florida State on Friday at 5:30pm and Miami on Sunday at noon. Should probably be another great crowd/atmosphere, as there is even better weather and with the team likely ranked in the top 5.

Looking the history of the series between Wolfpack women's tennis and Virginia, we haven't been very good...with only a 6-20 record since 2002. However, we've now won 2 of the last 3, and 4 of the last 8 meetings, going back to 2019.

Similar story against unc, with a 4-25 record going back to 1999. But we've currently won 2 of the last 3, and 3 of the last 5 meetings.

The last 5 years or so have been a MASSIVE turnaround in this program, from cellar dwellers in the ACC historically, to now a consistent top 10 program.

Also, for those not following women's professional tennis closely, there are two former Virginia women's tennis players currently in the top 15 in the world - #9 Emma Navarro and #15 Danielle Collins.

We have Diana Shnaider currently at #13.

Worth mentioning that Laki bounced back after a string of losses, by beating the #22 nationally ranked player from Virginia, and relatively easily by a score of 7-5, 6-1.

Sophomore Kristina Paskauskas was the first to respond, making a statement with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory over Bianca Pico-Navarro (UVA), securing the first singles win of the match for NC State.

Meanwhile, freshman Michaela Laki showed her strength, defeating No. 22 ranked Sara Ziodato of UVA. Laki took the first set 7-5, and then cruised through the second, only dropping one game to win 7-5, 6-1. This marked Laki's third victory this season over a higher-ranked opponent.

Sophomore Gabriella Broadfoot then battled through a tough contest against No. 104 ranked Isabelle Lacy, clinching the third point for the Wolfpack with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four.

As the Pack moved one point away from the clinch, courts two, three, and six were still in play. Junior Anna Zyryanova and No. 106 Maddy Zampardo fought hard to stay in the match, with both players pushing into the second set. The Cavaliers were able to grab a victory on court three, with No. 109 Xu defeating Zampardo 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of NC State.

With the match on the line, Zyryanova maintained her composure, battling into a third-set tiebreaker. Meanwhile, freshman Mia Slama, on the edge of her seat, powered through her third set to clinch the match for the Pack with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 victory.

No. 12 NC State women's tennis earned its highest-ranked win since 2023 after toppling No. 2 Virginia in a 4-2 victory in Raleigh on Sunday.

Despite losing the doubles point, NC State rallied in singles, defeating one of the best lineups in the country on almost every court. After a long tirade of singles play, freshman Mia Slama clinched the Pack's biggest win of the season yet.

Prior to its impressive victory over the Cavaliers, the Wolfpack swept the less-formidable Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday afternoon by a score of 4-0.

Versus No. 2 Virginia, 4-2 win

The Wolfpack fell in an early hole after losing the doubles point in its toughest match of the season. A perennial member of college tennis royalty, Virginia took it to NC State early on, earning wins on Courts 2 and 3 in the doubles round. While the No. 2 pair of sophomores Maddy Zampardo and Gabriella Broadfoot won 6-1 on Court 1, the Pack's other pairs fell, putting it in a 1-0 hole.

However, the Pack turned things around in singles. Not letting the mission of winning four singles courts against one of the best teams in the country intimidate them, the members of NC State proved they could play with and beat anyone in the nation, no matter their ranking.

Sophomore Kristina Paskauskas got things started in singles with a quick 6-0, 6-3 win on Court 5, which was followed by another two set win a hard-earned 6-4, 6-4 victory from Broadfoot on Court 4.

Up 2-1, NC State had momentum on each and every court in singles. Keeping its foot on the gas, the Wolfpack's No. 42 freshman Michaela Laki defeated Virginia's No. 22 Sara Ziodato to go up 3-1. Laki slugged out a tough first set win but had a strong second set. As Ziodato grew more frustrated throughout the match, Laki closed in faster and faster on her eventual 7-5, 6-1 victory.

From there, it came down to Slama, junior Anna Zyryanova and Zampardo, who were all battling in their third sets. Needing just one win across all three matches, Slama had more of a margin for error, and thus, more confidence in her match against Virginia's Martina Genis Salas.

"Having Anna and Maddy both playing at the same time, I was like, 'Okay, we just need to win one of these three matches,'" Slama said. "That took a lot of pressure off of me and it made me feel like I could play more freely and really play how I wanted to play."

Slama played a back-and-forth filled with ups and downs before her third set. However, as she entered the deciding set, the freshman knew how and what she wanted to do to defeat her opponent.

"Going into the third set, I definitely had a clear plan," Slama said. "I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to play aggressive, move forward, bring the tempo up the pace of the ball take the ball to her, not let her spin affect me as much and try and stay in control of points."

Zampardo eventually fell in her third set, leaving just Zyryanova and Slama to clinch the match. While both raced to the finish line, Slama crossed first, finishing off Genis Salas 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Like she did against then-No. 6 Michigan a month before, Slama was greeted by a rush of her teammates after clinching the upset win.

"It's an amazing feeling," Slama said. "I kind of get deja vu from last time. It's honestly an amazing feeling to see your team running towards you, knowing that you contributed a lot to the win. I'm overjoyed right now."

Slama's clinch over the Cavs marked NC State's best win of the season and the biggest victory for this set of young players.

"We've been looking better and better each week," said assistant coach David Secker. "These young players are getting used to playing all the time and the rigor of practice in the season. So I thought today was a good kind of midterm expression of that we kind of reached the point now where we're showing what we're learning."

Versus Virginia Tech, 4-0 win

Just a few days earlier NC State beat Virginia Tech in a much simpler match the Wolfpack defeated the Hokies in a 4-0 sweep in Raleigh.

Secker said all wins in the ACC are hard to come by, even 4-0 sweeps.

"You don't get a win in this league easily, and that's what we have to make them understand," Secker said. "It's good and bad because you can play with everybody, but even the ones where you maybe say, 'We're supposed to win,' the margins are not big."

NC State got out to a quick start via the doubles round against the Hokies. Broadfoot and Zampardo got their first win of the weekend in a 6-2 victory while Paskauskas and Laki downed their opponents on Court 3 to earn a 1-0 edge.

Slama got her first singles win of the weekend with a much easier win against Virginia Tech than her triumph against Virginia. Slama beat her Hokie opponent 6-1, 6-2 to get the round started for the Pack.
From there, Broadfoot and Zampardo each captured smooth two-set wins on Courts 3 and 2, respectively. Broadfoot won 6-1, 6-3 while Zampardo won 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match at 4-0. All other courts were left unfinished due to the clinch.

NC State is set to face two more formidable opponents in Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. Both are away matches and the Pack will travel to Durham to take on the Blue Devils on March 21. First serve is set for 6 p.m.

Gotta love this...we just beat Virginia when they were ranked #2, and they only fall to #3 and we are below them. By the way, Virginia already beat unc-CHeat twice this season. So I like our chances to beat the holes, even though we play them on the road. Maybe we can get a handful of NC State fans to make the trip over to help the cause. It wouldn't take but a few Pack fans to make a difference, if they are vocal. I plan to be there.
