A little bit odd, since her sister (Kristina Paskauskas) has been with the Wolfpack for the past two years, and as of right now appears to plan to return to NC State for her junior year. And from social media it appears that the two sisters are extremely close. I suspect that the reason Gabia may be transferring is for playing time. Before Laki got injured, Gabia was apparently our #7 singles player, and played #6 singles for us near the end of the year after Laki was out of the lineup. Looking at our roster for next season, we are bringing in the very highly rated freshman Victoria Osuigwe, who I would certainly expect to be among our top 6 at the start of the team competition in 2026. And if Laki returns from injury as well, then that would likely push Gabia down to #8 in singles on our roster, and therefore she would not likely see much playing time in the team competition season for us.

Thanks for the insight. I figured it was a bigger loss since she was ranked top 100 to end the season

Those ITA rankings are weird sometimes, and a player might be ranked much higher or lower than they "should" be. Gabia is a solid player, but we will be loaded next year with probably 7 players better than her. And of course you only play 6 players in singles in team competition. Aside from her, as of now it looks like we will be returning everyone from this past years' team, and adding the freshman Osuigwe, that is the #2 US recruit in the 2025 class. If everyone else is back and Laki can return from injury close to top form, IMO we will be a top 3-4 team in the country next year. Even without Laki, probably in the 5-10 range.

Michaela Laki posted on Instagram yesterday about this recent interview she did. The interview is in Greek, but of course you can turn on subtitles and auto-translate into English.

From about the 2:00 to 8:15 minute mark in the video, she talks about her progress since the injury to her knee. She says she had the surgery on April 30th, and that just this week is the first week she has been able to walk without crutches. She was told it would be about 8 months after the surgery until she could play again, and says here in the interview that she expects to be playing again by January or February of next year.

So from this interview it definitely sounds like she intends to return to NC State for the team competition season in 2026.
