These ITA team rankings are TOTALLY BONKERS. There is no reason for us to drop from #5 (last week) to #10 this week. And we just beat Virginia convincingly (#2 at the time), and they are still at #2!! LOLOL. And we are still below Michigan who we beat convincingly.

I suspect they must be significantly factoring in their individual rankings for each player in order to create their team rankings. If so, that would be a flawed methodology….as, for example, many of our unranked singles players beat ranked UVA players. The individual rankings can be highly inaccurate. Our #2 singles player Zyryanova, for example, is unranked right now (after a string of several recent losses). However, she has consistently shown over the last year that she is a ~25-40 best in the NCAA. She proved that this past Sunday when she took #18 ranked player from Virginia to a 3rd set tiebreak (match unfinished at about 5-5 in the tiebreak).

I was coming here to ask how we dropped 5 spots without losing.

ITA Rankings Explained

Understanding the ITA Rankings Algorithm (Used by DI, DII, & NAIA)

The Rankings Algorithm

(CountWinPts) / (#OfCountMatches + LossPts) The ITA uses a system of countable wins, where points from your 'X' most valuable wins and all of your losses are factored into your ranking average. The points awarded for each countable win and loss is determined by the previous unpublished ranking run. Only teams with an intradivisional win receive an unpublished ranking; all other teams are considered to be not ranked.

That's obviously a really bad series history vs Duke. But we can definitely beat them tomorrow. We've lost to them the last 3 meetings barely, 3-4 each time, and should have won a couple of those. Having some Wolfpack fans there would really help the cause, to cheer them on. I'm planning to be there, hopefully to see "history" made with a big victory.

I've been to several events at Duke over the past few years. I usually park in the "Science Drive parking deck" (located at the corner of Science Drive in Cameron Blvd), which has always been free to park in after 5:00pm on weekdays the times I've parked there. From there, it's about a 7-8 minute walk to the tennis stadium (which is basically right beside Cameron indoor). As always, it's free admission to all regular season college tennis matches.

Forecast right now with a high of around 60 tomorrow, but with a start time of 6pm it will be cooling down into the 50s during the match. I assume they will play it outdoors, but if for some reason they play it indoors, the indoor stadium is located right beside the outdoor stadium.

In a hard-fought battle, the No. 10 NC State women's tennis team came up just short, falling 4-3 to No. 7 Duke on Friday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.

The match began with Duke responding early in doubles, as the Blue Devils won 6-1 on court three to take the early lead. However, the Wolfpack duo of No. 2 Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo commanded the court, extending their winning streak to nine matches with a 6-4 victory on court one over the 13th ranked pairing of Irina Balus and Ellie Coleman of Duke. With the doubles point on the line, Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova fought back and fourth on court two, pushing their match to 5-5 before Duke sealed the point with a 7-5 win.

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Wolfpack was determined to regroup and mount a comeback. Duke quickly added to their lead when No. 25 Emma Jackson defeated No. 99 Maddy Zampardo 6-3, 6-4.

In response, freshman No. 27 Michaela Laki delivered a stellar performance, earning her fourth victory of the season over a top-50 opponent. Laki defeated No. 12 Irina Balus 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, marking her eighth ranked win this year.

Sophomore Gabriella Broadfoot then put the Pack on the scoreboard with a dominant 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 25 Emma Jackson, improving her dual match record to 9-2. Junior Anna Zyryanova followed suit, giving NC State the lead after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Liv Hovde, extending her perfect 3-0 record in conference play.

With the match on the line, freshman No. 121 Mia Slama battled on court six, claiming the second set after dropping the first. Despite her efforts, No. 125 Ellie Coleman managed to close out the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, clinching the win for the Blue Devils.

Looking ahead, the Wolfpack will travel to Chapel Hill, NC, to face No. 4 North Carolina on Sunday, March 23, at 3:00 PM.

The No. 10 NC State Women's Tennis team battled fiercely against the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels on Sunday afternoon, concluding a tough two-match road trip. Although the Pack came up just short, falling 4-3, they delivered strong performances against four top-50 ranked opponents.

After a challenging loss to No. 7 Duke on Friday evening, the young and determined Wolfpack were eager to bounce back in their matchup against the Tar Heels to close out the weekend series.

In doubles action, junior Anna Zyryanova and freshman Jasmine Conway took an early lead on court two, securing a 6-4 win over Cason Tanguiling and Thea Rabman. Their victory gave the Pack the early advantage, marking their second win together as a pair. Meanwhile, Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo dominated their doubles match, claiming their 30th win of the season and extending their impressive 10 match winning streak to reach 13 dual victories this season.

Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead, the Wolfpack was set to face four top-50 ranked opponents, including No. 9 Reese Brantmeier, No. 15 Theadora Rabman, No. 43 Carson Tanguiling, and No. 48 Tatum Evans.

The Tar Heels quickly asserted themselves in singles play, claiming victories on courts five, six, and one to take a 3-1 lead, putting them one win away from clinching the match. Sophomore No. 99 Maddy Zampardo, had other plans. After taking the first set, she dropped the second but rallied to secure a crucial win on court three. Zampardo fought back to win 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 against No. 43 Carson Tanguiling, putting the Pack on the board in singles.

The match of the day came from unranked junior Anna Zyryanova, who pulled off an upset against No. 15 Theadora Rabman. After dropping the first set 3-6, Zyryanova raised her level in the second, narrowing out Rabman 7-6. In the decisive third set, she dominated, finishing 6-1 to secure a stunning win over another ranked opponent.

With one match remaining on court four, Gabriella Broadfoot fought valiantly against No. 48 Tatum Evans. After a narrow loss in the first set 7-6, Broadfoot continued to battle in the third set but ultimately fell short, losing 6-4, giving the Tar Heels the clinching point 4-3

Looking ahead, the Wolfpack will return home to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to host Clemson on Friday, March 28 at 3:00 PM, followed by a matchup with Georgia Tech on Sunday, March 30 at noon in a two-match weekend dual.
