Making the Sweet Sixteen at the NCAA Tournament for the last 6 seasons is quite an accomplishment. It will be difficult to beat unc in the Super Regional this coming Friday, but we could do it if we manage to win the doubles point, and play well in singles. I plan to be there in red, answering Coach Earnshaw's call.

Good point. Six straight years being top 16 in the nation in a sport is something that is rare, and maybe only done by a few other Wolfpack programs in school history. The two you mentioned and also men's swimming would be my best guesses for those who possibly have done it.

Another good thing about the women's tennis head coach, Simon Earnshaw, is that he's fairly young (in early 50s, per his GoPack bio he got his undergraduate degree in 1996). So if we can hold on to him, hopefully he can be here for another 10-15 years.

Thanks for making us aware of this. This is a good interview with Coach Earnshaw. I'm just going to add it from YouTube as well, since it includes video.

FYI, unlike all regular season matches and the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, they are charging $5 for a ticket to attend the Super Regional tomorrow against unc in chapel hill.

unc has a fairly large amount of seating at their outdoor facility, so I doubt it would sell out. But it's possible, and so here is a link to buy a ticket just in case. Also, per the weather forecast right now looks like there is a decent chance for rain around 4-5pm. So hopefully it's not moved to their indoor facility, because there would be much less room/seating available inside there. I've gone to a few matches in their indoor facility (located right next to the outdoor courts), and would estimate you could only get about 300 fans in there.

We won the 1st set on 3, 4 and 6.

The Wolfpack's journey to Waco came to an end in Chapel Hill on Friday evening after a hard-fought battle resulting in a 4-2 loss to No. 5 North Carolina in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

For the sixth straight season, NC State reached the Sweet Sixteen, this time facing a familiar foe in in-state rival North Carolina. It was the third meeting of the season between the two programs, and the Wolfpack were hoping to flip the script and punch their ticket to the Elite Eight.

The match began with a burst of momentum in doubles play. No. 7-ranked duo Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo came out swinging on court one, determined to avenge two earlier losses to UNC's No. 2-ranked tandem Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton. Broadfoot and Zampardo delivered, earning a dominant 6-3 win to set the tone.

On court three, Mia Slama and Kristina Paskauskas, coming off a win over the Tar Heels at the ACC Championships, sought to repeat their success. However, UNC evened the doubles tally with a win on that court. With the point up for grabs, Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova mounted a late comeback on court two, rallying from a 3-5 deficit to force a tiebreaker. The duo held their nerve to secure the match and clinch the doubles point for NC State.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles, the Wolfpack looked poised, but the Tar Heels quickly responded. UNC picked up early wins on courts one and two, overtaking NC State on the scoreboard.

Despite the momentum shift, the Wolfpack stayed in the fight, earning first-set victories on courts three, four, and six.

Court one featured a rematch between No. 55 Anna Zyryanova and No. 3 Reese Brantmeier. After dropping the first set 6-2, Zyryanova pushed Brantmeier to the brink in the second, battling to 5-5 before narrowly falling 7-5. Brantmeier's win extended the Tar Heels' lead to 2-1.

On court five, No. 110 Mia Slama fought hard but came up short in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, giving UNC its third and one away from the clinch

Still, the Wolfpack saw a glimpse of hope. No. 86 Gabia Paskauskas bounced back impressively from a recent loss to UCF, delivering a strong performance. She took her match in commanding fashion, 6-4, 6-1, adding a second point for NC State.

The remaining matches on courts three and four saw Broadfoot and Kristina Paskauskas battling to extend the match. Both won their opening sets, but Kristina's match turned into a back and forth battle. After a narrow 7-6 (3) loss in the second, she continued to fight in the third. Ultimately, Hamilton closed the gap to clinch the match 4-2. With a loss today, the Wolfpacks team season has officially come to a close.

If Laki would have not got injured and we had her in the Sweet Sixteen match, IMO we would have had a very good chance of beating unc (as well as in the ACC tournament)-- because it then bumps everyone in our singles lineup down in the order, giving us more favorable matchups in #2 through #6 singles. In that scenario, we would have had Zyryanova going up against Rabman, who Zyryanova beat in the regular season matchup earlier this season. Then we would have had Zampardo going up against Evans, who Zamparo beat in the match in the ACC tournament semifinals this year. And we got the win at #6 singles, so then with the doubles point that was a solid path to 4 team points.

What was wild about the doubles matches in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen match a few days ago was that the result flipped in all 3 matches from what occurred in the ACC tournament semifinals, with the exact same players in every spot.

With Laki hopefully back next year, and the highly-touted freshman Victoria Osuigwe (would could possibly immediately play #1 or #2 singles), I feel like we will match up well with unc (or any other top 5 teams). The future is very bright for Wolfpack women's tennis for the near future.
