The No. 19 NC State women's tennis team returned to Raleigh to open up it's outdoor home season with a strong 5-2 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday evening.

Fresh off a 5-0 win against SMU last Sunday in Dallas, the Wolfpack returned to Raleigh with a renewed determination to make a statement on its home courts.

In doubles action, the newly ranked No. 2 duo of Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo set the tone early, claiming a swift 6-2 win over Sofia Johnson and Lidiia Rasskouskaia of ODU to extend their record to 5-1 in dual action. Michaela Laki and Kristinia Paskauskas followed behind to secure the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on court three.

As singles play unfolded, the Monarchs were quick to seize early momentum, winning the first sets on courts two and three. However, sophomore Gabriella Broadfoot responded by putting the first singles point on the board for the Wolfpack, defeating Ulyana Romanova 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Michaela Laki continued to shine, facing the challenge of No. 6 ranked Sofia Johnson. Laki dominated from the start, taking the first set 6-3. She maintained her composure throughout the match, securing a 6-3, 6-3 win and handing Johnson her first loss of the season. This victory marked Laki's second top-15 win in just five appearances.

Kristinia Paskauskas followed suit, earning a 6-3, 7-5 win over Victoria Matasova to seal the victory for the Wolfpack. On court six, freshman Mia Slama finished things off, defeating Marinia Markina 6-4, 6-3 to bring the final score to 5-2.

Next up, the Wolfpack will return to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to take on Michigan on Friday, February 14, at 3:00 PM.

Another big singles win for Laki, beating the #6 ranked player in NCAA D1. I'm fairly sure Laki must have been sick for the matches against Texas and SMU. I watched the live streams for the matches against SMU and saw Laki there with the team, but not dressed out and just sitting on the sidelines cheering on her teammates. And I saw on the stream yesterday that Conway was not dressed out and on the sidelines wearing a disposable face mask. So obviously the team is catching this cold/flu that's been going around.

If we would have had Laki against #11 Texas, I'd like to think we would have won, considering we barely lost 3-4 without her. Big home matchup this coming Friday (February 14th) at 3:00 pm against #7 ranked Michigan.

Yeah, Michigan is a very tough opponent. It will take us playing at the top of our game to have a chance to pull off the upset. They are 6-1 on the year so far, with the only loss to #13 Oklahoma by a score of 3-4. They have beaten #11 Texas (4-1), #16 LSU (4-0), #21 Florida (7-0), and #4 Virginia (4-2).

In general, we have an extremely tough schedule this year, with several highly-ranked out of conference opponents. And the ACC is absolutely loaded in women's tennis, with us having to face #4 Virginia, #7 UNC, #12 Stanford, #14 Duke, #18 Cal, and #25 Georgia Tech.

If all those matches go "chalk" (per current rankings), we could be talking about finishing with a final record of around 12-9. I think we may be a little better than our current ranking of #19. So maybe we can pull off a few upsets of our higher-ranked remaining opponents this year -- eg, good chances against Cal and/or Stanford at home.

Yup. Even if baseball wasn't going on, with the 3pm start time (before 5pm) you can't park in those parking lots adjacent to the baseball stadium without a permit.

As you posted above, get a free parking permit at the gopack link you posted above, and I think the closet place you can park for free with that permit is in the West Deck, which is a short ~1/4 mile walk to the tennis complex (and baseball stadium).

I went to the Michigan match. I thought we would lose, but wanted to be there anyway as Wolfpack women's tennis is probably my favorite NC State program to support (along with volleyball). So glad I went. It's not often that you upset a top 6 team in the country. This is one of the top wins in program history.

It's hard to understand how we lost to Texas Tech, after this win. Looking back, we should have beat #11 Texas too, as Michigan beat Texas 4-1. And we barely lost to Texas 3-4 without Laki.

I think part of the explanation for the varying results is we probably play better at home, with the home crowd support. Also, we have a very young team of mostly freshman and sophomores, and they are probably making big improvements over just the last few weeks. The freshman Mia Slama came up big tonight…she lost the 1st set badly, but then came back to win the final two sets convincingly. And under pressure too, because at the time we only had a 3-2 lead and it could have come down to her match deciding the dual.

This win provides a LOT of optimism for the rest of the season. We could beat anyone left on our schedule, as they are all ranked lower than Michigan…with the exception of #4 Virginia…but Michigan beat Virginia.

The No. 19 NC State women's tennis team closed out its non-conference schedule in impressive fashion, defeating the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines 5-2 Friday evening at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

The Pack quickly set the tone in doubles play, as the No. 2-ranked duo of Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo lived up to their ranking, defeating Michigan's No. 27-ranked pair of Piper Charney and Jessica Bernales 6-3 giving the Pack an early advantage in doubles action.

Michaela Laki and Kristina Paskauskas then clinched the doubles point for the Pack, besting Michigan's Ava Bruno and Lily Jones 6-4 to extend the lead.

With momentum on its side, the Pack entered singles action with confidence. However, Michigan's No. 4 Julia Fliegner took an early advantage, overpowering NC State's No. 52 Michaela Laki 6-3, 6-1 to pull the Wolverines even at 1-1.

Sophomore Maddy Zampardo put the Pack back in front with a dominant performance, defeating Michigan's No. 36 Lily Jones 6-3, 7-5. Zampardo's victory extended her impressive 6-1 singles record on the season.
Gabriella Broadfoot then extended the lead on court four, battling through three sets to defeat No. 66 Reese Miller 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Freshman Mia Slama delivered the clinching victory for NC State after a hard-fought three-set match against Michigan's Jessica Bernales. After dropping the first set, Slama bounced back to take the second 6-3 and sealed the win with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On court one, Kristina Paskauskas capped the evening with a three-set victory over Emily Sartz-Lunde, securing the 5-2 win for the Pack with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 result.

Next up, NC State will turn its focus to the start of conference play, heading to Louisville to take on the Cardinals on Feb. 28 at 4:00 PM in Louisville, KY.
