There's been a major change beginning this year in the NCAA tennis schedule. This will be the first year that the singles and doubles championships will be contested in the fall (November 19-24 this fall), instead of the spring (immediately after the team championships) as they have been for many years. The team championships will still be held in the spring, in April and May.

So I assume this could mean we will have more singles and doubles (not team) competitions in the fall, September and October leading up to the Championships in November, than in years past.

Unfortunately, from the media day pics a few days ago, it appears that Anna Zyryanova is injured. Which obviously explains why she was not playing at the Furman Fall Classic last weekend. I hope that it is not an achilles injury.

The ITA All-American Championships begin this weekend at Cary Tennis Park, running from Saturday, Sept 21 through Sunday, Sept 29.

This is a major tournament, and includes all of the top women's players from the entire country coming to Cary, NC for this week of competition. There aren't multiple sites for this. Cary is the lone site for the women's tournament in the entire nation. The men's competition is being held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This is the 3rd year in a row that the ITA All-American women's tournament is being hosted in Cary, NC. That speaks to the fact of how nice of a venue Cary Tennis Park is. So I encourage people to come out to see some of the matches. You have to take advantage of the fact that this thing is being hosted right here in our back yard. I went to this event last year, and can confirm that admission is free (per link below), and that parking is free as well.

This weekend might be the best time to come out if wanting to see the Wolfpack women in action (as well as just see a TON of matches from players from schools all over the country), as the first few rounds of both singles and doubles are being played. There's about 16 courts at Cary Tennis Park used for competition, so there will probably be about 15-16 matches going on at all times all day long this weekend.

More on the tournament here:
https://wearecollegetennis.com/2024/09/13/ita-all-american-championships-begin-this-weekend/

Here's a link with the draws/schedule to find out who is playing when:
https://colleges.wearecollegetennis.com/Competitions/ITA/Tournaments/draws/99AC22FB-6F27-407E-B570-66C41FBAB1DB

Scanning through the schedule (with only matches for tomorrow, Saturday Sept 21st available on the schedule), for the Wolfpack women in singles, I see freshman Gabia Paskauskas scheduled to play on Saturday Sept 21 at 10:15 am, freshman Mia Slama on Saturday Sept 21 at 10:30 am, Kristina Paskauskas on Saturday Sept 21 at 11:00 am, and Jasmine Conway on Saturday Sept 21 at 1:00 pm.

For doubles, we have Jasmine Conway and Kristina Paskauskas on Saturday Sept 21 at 5:30 pm, and Mia Slama and Gabia Paskauskas on Saturday Sept 21 at 4:00 pm.

All those matches I just mentioned are "pre-qualifying". The only two Wolfpack women entered into the tournament that aren't on the schedule for Saturday are Maddy Zampardo and Gabby Broadfoot. This is because Zampardo and Broadfoot have a high enough ranking that they don't have to go through pre-qualifying, and will go straight into the qualifying rounds. And the only other player on the roster, Anna Zyryanova, is apparently injured and is not entered into the tournament.

From the schedule, play starts at 9:00 am tomorrow, and will continue until around 7:30pm. Looking at the forecast, there is very low chance of rain for tomorrow (Saturday).

I went to Cary Tennis Park yesterday to watch the Wolfpack women's singles matches. I just watched on the PlaySight live stream our highly-recruited (#5 in the 2024 class) freshman Mia Slama win her 2nd round match in pre-qualifying this morning over Ghosh, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Her opponent is a senior who played number #6 singles for Notre Dame last year (losing to Dittmann when we played them in dual competition in both 2023 and 2024).

Slama started out slow in both sets, going down 0-2 in the first and 0-3 in the second, before storming back to win both sets. Slama is not that tall (maybe around 5'8" or 5'9"), but she has a pretty good serve. I would estimate that she hit about 7 or 8 aces in the match. I recall her hitting two aces in at least two separate games.

Been watching more of the action on the playsight live streams today. Very impressive singles wins today with high-quality tennis by the freshman Gabia Paskauskas and Gabbi Broadfoot. Broadfoot looks improved from last year, was aggressive with her groundstrokes without making many errors, has a surprisingly good serve for someone as short as she is, and is very fit and fast around the court.

Gabia Paskauskas looks like she could be a very good one, and just as big of a recruit as Slama. Gabia has now won four matches to start this tournament, and today got a win over a senior from Cal, Lan Mi, who (per the Cal official site) had a 40-5 record for Cal in singles last year (including a 20-2 tournament mark, a 20-3 dual-match record and a 9-1 record in Pac-12 dual matches) and was All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

With Zyryanova (a junior) out for a while, this team is extremely young, with 4 sophomores and 2 freshman comprising the rest of the roster. However, with the quality of the freshmen (Gabia Paskauskus, Slama) and the upside and improvement of some of the returners (notably Broadfoot and Kristina Paskauskas), IMO this team could be fairly solid when this coming January/February rolls around.
