Yup. Said it earlier. We've been saving him for scenarios that haven't happened, but at some point in time he needs to get in a game and get used to the experience.

You still have to be prudent with your pitchers in this situation. NC State could just as easily have a 'punt' game on Sunday, and in that case, the 'punt pitchers' need to get you through the ninth inning without going to one of the arms you bank on.
I say try to get seven or eight out of Highfill. Whatever decision is made, it has to provide leverage for all scenarios regarding the second and third games.

Sam's at 95 pitches. He ain't going 7 or 8. Is this an argument to save your secondary arms in case you have a punt game tmr?

Sounds like Shaffner is next arm. I imagine Sam goes back out for the 6th
Highfill has about hit his limit for the day. He's really struggling to locate the ball.
He did his job. Hand the ball over to the next dude, and get this game over with. The lead allows you to cherry pick who you want to use, and you're still in a best case scenario pitching wise to win one of thesr next two games.

I really disagree that he's struggling to locate. I think what makes him so good is that he very rarely pitches to the heart of the plate. He nibbles and makes guys chase/takes advantage of college umps (not this guy unfortunately). It leads to maybe 2/3 more walks than it should, but being able to pitch a few inches off either side of the plate is his super power.

I've not watched him pitch before, but a guy that starts falling off to the side of the mound and is up in the zone is tired.
