MLB DRAFT TRACKER: Wolfpack Players And Signees

July 13, 2021
41,734

The 2021 MLB Draft is ongoing and you can follow where all of NC State's players/signees are selected through the Inside Pack Sports Draft Tracker.

NC State is expected to have multiple players drafted in the three-day draft, which began on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN and the MLB network.

The first Wolfpack player selected was 2021 signee Kahlil Watson out of Wake Forest, North Carolina.  A dynamic shortstop prospect, Watson is the first North Carolina prep standout to be selected in the first round since another NC State signee, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover pitcher Blake Walston, was taken No. 26 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.

As expected, look for Watson to ink professionally and not play for NC State given his lofty draft projection.

Day 2 of the Draft begins Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the start of the second round and will continue through the completion of Round 10.  The Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at noon ET.

As each NC State player is drafted we will update the the tracker below so you can follow along throughout the weekend!

POSITION PLAYER ROUND PICK TEAM
Shortstop Kahlil Watson No. 1 No. 16 Miami
Outfielder Tyler McDonough No. 3 No. 75 Boston
Shortstop Jose Torres No. 3 No. 89 Cincinnati

Losing Hood and Craig on last round, back to back picks would SUCK. Two guys who most likely would start and play a whole lot for the Pack 9 next year.
Hood, yes. Would make getting Green extremely important.

Craig wouldn't be the end of the world. We have numbers in the OF.

Trey Truitt
Noah Soles
Devonte Brown should be back
maybe the transfer from Charlotte, Dom Pilolli.

Hopefully once the excitement of being drafted wears off Craig can be talked into coming to school.

Getting White and likely Green is a huge coup. Also keep an eye on Mensik potentially signing an undrafted deal. I think you could also see Dalton Feeney get an undrafted deal

Deadline to sign is August 1 so this won't be a long, drawn-out process like it usually is
Will NC State baseball players have access NIL? Ethan has IPS investigated the how our athletics staff is approaching NIL? Are they out seeking deals with agents? Can they create a list of NIL brokers for players to consider? The athletics staff sells ads and does merchandise so there folks who are in this space now. Will they transition to a role in NIL?

Thanks. I am sure it will take time to see how this works for athletes across all sports. My instincts were that the NCAA run increased public awareness of the baseball program and thus added market value to players images.

Honestly, I don't think I've seen any baseball players anywhere coming out with any kind of big NIL deal. Actually, outside of Oregon and Miami, I haven't seen many big money deals at all. I think outside of a few high profile guys in basketball and football, you aren't going to see as much real money out there as some maybe would think. I know some of our baseball guys have been named barstool athletes, but I haven't found where that is going to net them any money. Baseball money is already stretched pretty thin, I'm just not sure there will ever be enough NIL money out there to convince a kid to come to school instead of signing, or return to school. Maybe there will be a video game that will get them some money or something down the road, who knows.
Just a guy on the sunshine squad.

Honest question here...why do people think Tresh will be back? (other than Rogers statement) We have two good catchers coming in and KC is who drafted him. Perez, their starter, is getting old. Tresh has good power and a strong arm. He needs to learn to hit pro breaking pitches (he can't do that in college) and he needs to be much better defensively behind the plate. I think it better for him to learn from the KC coaches, not ours. With Perez getting older, KC may be two to four years from making a catching changing....just about time for Tresh to be ready. I don't think he can prove anything else and has a good situation....I would sign if I were him.

He will be back. He's looking for way more money than where he was drafted. He also needs to prove his bat isn't hampered by his catching duties (like it was the 2nd half of the season)

1. He still has another "leverage" year.
2. Something caused him to fall and most people don't believe it was his play at the end of the season. I think he had a big number and teams didn't want to pay it. Royals took a flyer.
3. The JUCO catcher is probably going to sign with the Rangers if I were a betting man so that just leaves Cozart. That's not really a reason why I think Tresh is coming back just more informational. If we hear that Mitchell doesn't sign with the Rangers then I'd guess Tresh is gone and the staff worked Mitchell to get him to enroll.
4. KC also drafted a C in the 3rd round that has said he's going to sign. Hometown kid too. (not that it matters a ton).

I do think that the Royals will have some money leftover to try and get guys like Tresh to sign. Don't know if it will be enough.

Thanks...it sounds like you have spoken with him. I have know players that asked for too much money and didn't get drafted as high as they were ranked because of their money demands. A couple even fell to later rounds than they should have been draft due to those demands. Pros don't draft guys high they don't think are signable. One player I coached asked for first round money even though he was a 4-8 round projection, went to college one year, played fairly well, got hurt and didn't get drafted ever again AND never even finished college. His life could have been much different had not the money demands been in the way. I think Tresh needs to think long and hard about what he will do. He has a good opportunity in front of him. What if he does improve much? One year in college plus three to four years to get better in the minors WHILE making money.

I wish him the best in whatever he decides. We need to consider the player's best interest here and not NC State.

I think Hood could prove something by playing well at SS (both on offense and defense) in the ACC. He may want to think about his position before he signs. If he plays well, he could command a lot more money. Not so sure about Tresh. I don't think he will be Patrick Bailey.....Bailey is in high A right now.

This makes more sense.....just like the kid I coached...Tresh may wish he hadn't ask for so much money. I know my player and his mom (the driving force in his decision) did.

Thanks for the info.

From what I understand, and it's not firsthand, it's much more than that. He views himself as a high draft pick, not 70-110. That 500 number is off by a factor of more than 1

Yeah, I had heard his number was more in line with late 1st rd money, which is probably why he fell anyway.

interesting because i thought the opposite (granted, he had like a 1% chance of NOT signing and i don't blame him at all). but if he played a high level center field next year and kept hitting, he is a top 10 round pick. he has more tools than Butler to me. But, of course, no leverage. potential wise, I thought he had the most to gain
