MLB DRAFT TRACKER: Wolfpack Players And Signees

July 13, 2021
41,762

The 2021 MLB Draft is ongoing and you can follow where all of NC State's players/signees are selected through the Inside Pack Sports Draft Tracker.

NC State is expected to have multiple players drafted in the three-day draft, which began on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN and the MLB network.

The first Wolfpack player selected was 2021 signee Kahlil Watson out of Wake Forest, North Carolina.  A dynamic shortstop prospect, Watson is the first North Carolina prep standout to be selected in the first round since another NC State signee, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover pitcher Blake Walston, was taken No. 26 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.

As expected, look for Watson to ink professionally and not play for NC State given his lofty draft projection.

Day 2 of the Draft begins Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the start of the second round and will continue through the completion of Round 10.  The Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at noon ET.

As each NC State player is drafted we will update the the tracker below so you can follow along throughout the weekend!

POSITION PLAYER ROUND PICK TEAM
Shortstop Kahlil Watson No. 1 No. 16 Miami
Outfielder Tyler McDonough No. 3 No. 75 Boston

the lack of competition being from connecticut makes sense. small state population and not in a baseball hotbed. but with that said, wasn't matt harvey all the rave coming out of high school ?

i'm from caldwell county and remember scouts coming to town and debating who was better coming out of high school between harvey and madison bumgarner

I didn't say the kid sucks. I just said he was a surprise pick in the top 10 which were the exact same words the guys on TV said as well. Just like Khalil Watson is MUCH better than being drafted 16th and a better prospect than Mozzicato, he fell b/c of his money demands.

Mozzicato rose b/c of the opposite.

The MLB draft is so weird. I love it.

I've long believed that the baseball model would work in the NBA as well. Gives the kids leverage and allows a development pathway if they want to skip college.

congrats to evan, but dang tough he signed for 250K less than slot. also didn't realize he was 4th in the country in saves. He was incredible this year

i'm not arguing with you. wasn't trying to come across as being combative. baseball leaves you scratching your head sometimes. ha you summed up my feelings, mlb/draft can get real weird.

Gotcha. I wasn't trying to be combative either, sorry if it came across that way.

Lower than I would've expected but he is an older guy. May have sacrificed some $$ to go earlier

Ok....bunch of Royals signings announced...here's what we've got so far...
Round -
1 - $3,550,000 (slot is $5,432,000)
2- $3,000,000 (slot is $1,729,800)
Comp B - not announced/not signed yet (slot is $1,000,000)
3- $1,097,500 (slot is $793,000)
4- $1,000,000 (slot is $538,200)
5- not announced/not signed yet (slot is $398,000)
6- $297,000 (slot is $299,000)
7- $197,500 (slot is $233,000)
8- $208,000 (slot is $184,700)
9- $17,500 (slot is $158,600)
10- $72,500 (slot is $147,700)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
11- $347,500 ($125,000) $222,500 goes towards the draft pool money (that seems like a lot)
Two other picks were a total of $10,000 towards the pool money. So that's $232,500 that goes towards the pool money.

Draft pool money - $10,917,700
Total spent - $9,676,000
-----------------------------------------------
$1,241,700 left with the Comp B and 5th round pick (and Luca) left to sign.

All 3 picks are college kids with leverage.

Thanks for typing up this breakdown. These were the same numbers I got as well. The 4 high school picks going over their slot value give us a better chance of Luca returning. Wilson from Alabama (Comp B pick) is a SO so he still has an additional year of leverage however he'll already be 22 for the draft next year. Cerantola from Miss State (5th RD) would be my bet to take less money to sign since he's from Canada and he may be in a similar situation as Menseik being an international student and ready to go the pro route.

Good breakdown. Think Wilson (comp B) and 5th rounder will be underslot... but how much? Wilson may not be much underslot. The fact that all the 11-20 draftees signed is probably a good sign, it's really hard to sign them all and have the space

Why are there restrictions on the amount of $ teams can spend to sign their draft picks? It doesn't make sense given the MLB operates without a salary cap in place. Is this draft pool $ limit a concession from the players association to ownership because of that?

More or lesskeeps the players from dictating where they want to go as wellcould ask for tons of money and only the big markets would be able to sign them and just keep drafting the guys that fell due to signability

Instead the draft allows the small market teams to at the very least collect assets and try to build.

I think he and Hood were the 2 drafted recruits least likely to sign. Craig will be interesting to watch. Have to believe Mitchell is waiting on Tresh

Be a mini gut punch. He'd have the most tools on the team next year, IMO. Good thing is we have a little OF depth, so next man up

Why does he think this? The amount of money the Sox have left? One analyst labeled Payton a tough sign before the draft. He must have a high number.

Many reasons including what you mentioned, primarily that he's a possible/likely first rounder in three years

FWIW, not doubting you at all, you have solid baseball takes. But what kind of player is Green? I've read he's a trea turner light, but not sure I see that. What would realistic expectations for him be in Raleigh?

I've never seen him play but scouting report is bigger dude who may not stick at short (though in college he probably does). Developing power and hit tool is biggest strength, does swing and miss more than you'd like. Really good athlete but 6-3, so we'll see what happens as he fills out.

Expectations probably aren't fair because I've got higher expectations based on State's track record of developing shortstops. He projects as more of a Dunand or Wilson than Turner, if that makes sense

for sure. He has good size, but the quickest 60 I have seen is 6.90, which is a good time, but doesn't scream great athlete to me (which is fine). Excited to have him

Also, if Craig hasn't signed (no idea) the O's just went wayyyy over slot for their 8th rounder

I wasn't sure if they brought all their picks in and gave them the "mlb experience" and welcome spiel in hopes it helps with contract negotiations
