MLB DRAFT TRACKER: Wolfpack Players And Signees

July 13, 2021
41,763

The 2021 MLB Draft is ongoing and you can follow where all of NC State's players/signees are selected through the Inside Pack Sports Draft Tracker.

NC State is expected to have multiple players drafted in the three-day draft, which began on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN and the MLB network.

The first Wolfpack player selected was 2021 signee Kahlil Watson out of Wake Forest, North Carolina.  A dynamic shortstop prospect, Watson is the first North Carolina prep standout to be selected in the first round since another NC State signee, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover pitcher Blake Walston, was taken No. 26 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.

As expected, look for Watson to ink professionally and not play for NC State given his lofty draft projection.

Day 2 of the Draft begins Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the start of the second round and will continue through the completion of Round 10.  The Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at noon ET.

As each NC State player is drafted we will update the the tracker below so you can follow along throughout the weekend!

POSITION PLAYER ROUND PICK TEAM
Shortstop Kahlil Watson No. 1 No. 16 Miami
Outfielder Tyler McDonough No. 3 No. 75 Boston
Shortstop Jose Torres No. 3 No. 89 Cincinnati
Pitcher Evan Justice No. 5 No. 140 Colorado
1st Baseman Austin Murr No. 6 No. 165 Detroit
Outfielder Jonny Butler No. 14 No. 428 Oakland

Take a look at the MLB draft tracker and it tells you, off to the right, the slot values. Keep in mind that if you see a team drafting a SR in the top 10 rounds it's b/c they are trying to save money from the pool towards signing another kid they've selected that will probably command over slot. Ethan can clean this part up for me b/c I'm admittedly not very knowledgeable when it comes to the slot values, etc.

https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker/2021/all/round/4

*Also, just heard that in 2019 (last time there was a full draft) only 2 kids drafted in the first 10 rounds didn't sign.
Correct. If a kid picked in the first ten rounds doesn't sign, the team loses all of that slot money. The total of the slots is how much you can spend on the draft. For example, the Marlins have $9.95 million to spend on the draft, Watson's slot is $3.75 mill, if they didn't sign him, they would lose that and their total would become $6.25 million. Like CLT said, you don't have to sign them for exact slot and that's why rounds 8-10 is primarily seniors. After the tenth round, there's no slot and therefore no financial punishment to not signing a draftee.

So we're still waiting on Johnston, Butler, Brown, Tresh, Mensik, Tatum.... plus a couple of H.S. kids?
Is that correct?

No but he'll most likely sign as a FA

It's notable that he and Green haven't been picked yet

So basically there is little incentive for a guy to ever come back for a senior year? You almost get penalized for it, because your signing bonus will be so much lower.

End of 10th rd is still ~150k slot. Obviously the later it goes the more he could try to bet on himself but who knows what a high schooler will do.

not always the case. Evan Edwards got drafted as a SR and signed for 6 figures. It's not unheard of.

White was ranked 107 by MLB. That slot is about 550k, say that's White's number, a team has to come up with 350k at this point in the draft. Green was 147 and slot for that is about 350.

And that doesn't factor in whether or not they can boost their stock by coming to school, which based on State's track record, they can

Not unheard of but Edwards was 400k under slot. He would've gotten more as a junior even if he went outside the top ten rounds.

I've read and seen others hint that he wants a bunch of $$$$$ and was going to be a hard sign. Hoping that was true and we are seeing him slip because of it. Hope he comes to NCSU, shows out and is a top 5 pick. Sounds like he has a ton of tools

Those dude's monetary wants were probably much higher than slot at those rankings.

Gonna be tough for him to be a top 5 pick b/c he doesn't really have a position which is partially why he's not been selected yet.

But hey, get him in school and have him prove me wrong. haha

I don't think he would've gotten more, but that's just my opinion.

Also, there were only 3 HS kids selected in the 7th round. College and JUCO talent is sooooooo deep this year.

White is a plug in play at 3rd or 1st and a 3 or 4 hole hitter from day 1. Luca Tresh power with better contact/barrel skills. Elite prep bat, would be huge to get him on campus for a couple years. Fingers crossed

I mean he's a supposedly iffy 3b right now right? No reason he can't come to State and show he can stick there or get moved to an OF spot and just mash. I agree it's not likely but if his hit tool and power are as advertised I think he will make plenty of money by the time he's done in the red and white.

If I'm not mistaken Tre Turner had his ability to stick at SS question either out of HS or out of college. Lot of these guys don't know much of what they are looking at....

Poor comparison. Trea Turner is fast and could play any OF position. Tommy White is big and slow. That plays just fine in college though.

Like I said, I'm all for him showing up in Raleigh and breaking every school and conference batting record and being a top 5 pick.

If White wants to stick at 3rd, he needs to reshape his body some and get a a little quicker and more athletic, because you are spot on. That was his biggest question going into this, a physically developed, right handed, HS first basemen (where people think he will ultimately end up) aren't typically in high demand. That said, the bat is elite.

All that said, he apparently has a solid/good glove at 3rd. Just needs to improve the athleticism

May just be completely in my head but seems like other than the really elite stud HS kids, most of the MLB teams are passing the HS kids for college kids more and more and putting that risk on the kid or the college team to turn him into a true prospect. Could end up being good for NCSU this season.

Is there a point where Tresh comes back or is he gone regardless of where he's drafted? Seems to be really tanking at the moment.

I think the fact that so many players had to go back last year is really affecting the HS kids this year. Why take a flyer on a HS kid when the college draft is *presumably* deeper since last year's draft was only 5 rounds?
