Correct. If a kid picked in the first ten rounds doesn't sign, the team loses all of that slot money. The total of the slots is how much you can spend on the draft. For example, the Marlins have $9.95 million to spend on the draft, Watson's slot is $3.75 mill, if they didn't sign him, they would lose that and their total would become $6.25 million. Like CLT said, you don't have to sign them for exact slot and that's why rounds 8-10 is primarily seniors. After the tenth round, there's no slot and therefore no financial punishment to not signing a draftee.CLTWolf said:
Take a look at the MLB draft tracker and it tells you, off to the right, the slot values. Keep in mind that if you see a team drafting a SR in the top 10 rounds it's b/c they are trying to save money from the pool towards signing another kid they've selected that will probably command over slot. Ethan can clean this part up for me b/c I'm admittedly not very knowledgeable when it comes to the slot values, etc.

*Also, just heard that in 2019 (last time there was a full draft) only 2 kids drafted in the first 10 rounds didn't sign.
MLB DRAFT TRACKER: Wolfpack Players And Signees
The 2021 MLB Draft is ongoing and you can follow where all of NC State's players/signees are selected through the Inside Pack Sports Draft Tracker.
NC State is expected to have multiple players drafted in the three-day draft, which began on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN and the MLB network.
The first Wolfpack player selected was 2021 signee Kahlil Watson out of Wake Forest, North Carolina. A dynamic shortstop prospect, Watson is the first North Carolina prep standout to be selected in the first round since another NC State signee, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover pitcher Blake Walston, was taken No. 26 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.
As expected, look for Watson to ink professionally and not play for NC State given his lofty draft projection.
Day 2 of the Draft begins Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the start of the second round and will continue through the completion of Round 10. The Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at noon ET.
