MLB DRAFT TRACKER: Wolfpack Players And Signees

July 13, 2021
41,705

The 2021 MLB Draft is ongoing and you can follow where all of NC State's players/signees are selected through the Inside Pack Sports Draft Tracker.

NC State is expected to have multiple players drafted in the three-day draft, which began on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN and the MLB network.

The first Wolfpack player selected was 2021 signee Kahlil Watson out of Wake Forest, North Carolina.  A dynamic shortstop prospect, Watson is the first North Carolina prep standout to be selected in the first round since another NC State signee, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover pitcher Blake Walston, was taken No. 26 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.

As expected, look for Watson to ink professionally and not play for NC State given his lofty draft projection.

Day 2 of the Draft begins Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the start of the second round and will continue through the completion of Round 10.  The Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at noon ET.

As each NC State player is drafted we will update the the tracker below so you can follow along throughout the weekend!

POSITION PLAYER ROUND PICK TEAM
Shortstop Kahlil Watson No. 1 No. 16 Miami
Outfielder Tyler McDonough No. 3 No. 75 Boston

and there goes Payton Green...early 15th round.

Wonder if there's enough money there for him to sign?
So, the slot values end after the 10th round...does that mean they can spend anything they want after that? I'd imagine the 14th round wouldn't warrant a lot of money. The Red Sox also drafted 3 HS SSs...kinda strange, no?
High school SS's means nothing. They may move to 2b, 3b or any out field position.....if they can hit. SS's move often. They are normal the best athletes on the field in high school. I always wanted a whole team of SS for defense. The best one played short and everyone else found a new position.

Sounds like Green may grow into 3rd base anyway. Just thought it was interesting. *shrug*

Josh Hood and Trendon Craig go back to back in the last round. Hopefully no worries with those two.

Hood and Craig getting picked is pretty scary

Well looks like he went undrafted

So looks like Devonte is back. Man, dude was about to make himself a ton of money last year and covid ruined that and now he's undrafted in 2021. Dang.

I can't imagine that Hood and Craig would sign. I doubt the Red Sox would have enough dough for Hood and I'm wondering if the Craig pick was a home town selection for a DMV kid by the Orioles?

Gone:
Torres
McDonough
Justice
Murr
Johnston
Watson

Decision time:
Butler
Tatum
Craig
Hood

Most likely back:
Tresh
Green

Getting White and likely Green is a huge coup. Also keep an eye on Mensik potentially signing an undrafted deal. I think you could also see Dalton Feeney get an undrafted deal

Deadline to sign is August 1 so this won't be a long, drawn-out process like it usually is

What about Devo?

Translate all our outfielders to defense.....all left fielders except McDonough and he is a pro infielder. None of our other guys project that well defensively. Tresh's arm is pretty good but he needs work at catcher. Butler hit very well but he is a pro left fielder with only marginal power.Tatum may can play center but he doesn't have much arm. Brown is pretty athletic for a LF and DH but if he had another position, he may have been drafted. Our team meshed offensively at the end and our pitching staff stepped up, big time. But individually, after McDonough and Torres at short who appears to have all the tools and lots of talent but is very raw and will need time and training, our defense was lacking some for pro ball as a group. I think it is reflective in their draft positions. I also think Murr helped himself by playing a very capable left field on a national stage versus Vandy.

My guess is he wanted to return. Not sure why he wouldn't have been drafted otherwise.

Interesting you have Reid as gone. I thought there was a possibility he returned if drafted really late, especially with his best friend JT coming back

Yeah I probably have him in the wrong spot. He is most likely to sign out of those guys IMO

Green is interesting. It would be odd for the Red Sox to pick him there if they hadn't already confirmed they had the money for him to sign. They drafted college guys in 7 of the first 10 rounds, so they could try to sign most of them under slot value and use the additional funds to sign Green. I don't know what kind of money he's looking for, but it would be pretty easy for them to carve out $300-$500K from those other signings to throw at him on top of the $125K. They took a HS guy in the 13th also, so might see them try and do the same with both.

I think Mayer and Fabian will command a lot of money as their first 2 picks, which would probably eat a lot of the savings.

I assume Mayer would get full slot, but Fabian, you might be able to pay him $1.5 or something, rather than the $1.88 at slot. It'd be silly for him to go back and likely get significantly less than $1.5 because he won't have any real leverage at that point. Then they can try and save $50 to $100K each on the remaining 6 college guys in the top 10 and spread that money over the other two guys. I'm not saying that's what is going to happen, just be surprised they picked Green without a real plan.

Fabian is a draft eligible sophomore so he has a bunch of leverage.

I'm not saying this is the case at all --but-- teams do occasionally draft guys they know they can't sign to keep that money available for other guys they know will take a little more.

I'm not sure the Red Sox can save enough money to add to $125k to sign Green. If Green doesn't have known signability issues then he's gone in rounds 3-5. Can they match those bonus numbers or beat them? Red Sox scouted the area heavily as they liked Watson too. Maybe they just liked Green. I dunno.

Should tell you all you need to know about Green, and guessing they aren't very confident on Hood either

Seeing GT, Miami, and UNC low on that list is surprising. Might not have had great seasons, but they're still recruiting talent every year.

Losing Hood and Craig on last round, back to back picks would SUCK. Two guys who most likely would start and play a whole lot for the Pack 9 next year.
