NC State has added a second player out of the transfer portal from Wright State, as starting pitcher Chet Lax just announced his commitment to the Wolfpack.

The left-hander made 17 appearances on the mound for the Raiders with 13 starts.

Lax tossed a team-high 78.2  innings and was the winning pitcher in nine of his 13 starts; his 9-1 record led the Horizon League and is tied for the second-most wins in a season by a Horizon League player over the last decade.

Lax turned in six quality starts for the Raiders, including seven shutout innings in a win over Tennessee.

He joins Wright State infielder Hunter Warren as portal commitments for the Wolfpack.

Haven't seen this guy pitch. But just looking off the numbers for 3 season at Wright State. Seems like an average arm. Throws strikes doesn't strike out a ton.

Improved each year but FIP and xFIP were still over 5.

Maybe he can continue to take a jump.

Watched his highlights and he looks like an undersized soft tossing lefty.

Stuff doesn't look overwhelming but if you can throw strikes and locate that makes up for a lot of it.

Looking at how he did against UGa and Tenn, I think he can sling it just fine.

You can see Lax throw and watch Sogard get tossed. I think he gets tossed. Starts around the 3 minute mark.

He can obviously pitch and pitch well. I wasn't trying to knock him and I have advocated for more "Pitchers" and less "Throwers".

The best comp for me would probably be Brian Brown, and if he turns out anything like that we will be elated.

Give me a guy that has control, has about an 8 MPH difference in his fastball and changeup, and can throw anything with a 12/6 tilt, and you've got yourself a homerun. And you're not waiting on him to recover from Tommy John from trying to throw 98mph.

Agree that velocity is overrated but you better have something else to offset it. Extension, release height and spin rate top of the list. Garino is a good example. There's a reason Dudan spammed sliders early in his career, his velo played down. But you can't just throw 88 with good location and be good, the other boxes have to be checked.
