MLB DRAFT TRACKER: Wolfpack Players And Signees

The 2021 MLB Draft is ongoing and you can follow where all of NC State's players/signees are selected through the Inside Pack Sports Draft Tracker.

NC State is expected to have multiple players drafted in the three-day draft, which began on Sunday and will be televised on ESPN and the MLB network.

The first Wolfpack player selected was 2021 signee Kahlil Watson out of Wake Forest, North Carolina.  A dynamic shortstop prospect, Watson is the first North Carolina prep standout to be selected in the first round since another NC State signee, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover pitcher Blake Walston, was taken No. 26 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.  

As expected, look for Watson to ink professionally and not play for NC State given his lofty draft projection.

Day 2 of the Draft begins Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the start of the second round and will continue through the completion of Round 10.  The Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at noon ET.

As each NC State player is drafted we will update the the tracker below so you can follow along throughout the weekend!

Ethan, I'll defer to your knowledge on this but I was wondering...since rd11+ has no slot value, is anyone selected from that point on a candidate to make it back to campus next year? Or are our college guys a lock to leave if selected at all, regardless of where that happens to be?

Yes, particularly Tresh because he has another year of leverage. I'd still expect Johnston, Butler, Tatum and Brown to sign. McLain and Deatherage are most recent examples of guys who returned despite being drafted.

So State is going to make it out of the day with White and Green still on the board, plus the possibility of Tresh returning. Obviously, they could still get picked tomorrow but they were plenty good enough to go today, so there's a hang up in price and won't be easier for them to sign if they get picked tomorrow. Huge day for State.

Trendon Craig, Josh Hood and Jake Cozart will be the names to watch tomorrow

Man, I went from assuming most all starting position players were gone to hoping we can get several back. Great news! On top of having four guys picked in the first two days.

Build/massively improve/do something for baseball facilities.

Thanks for your insight....the MLB draft is confusing for those of us who never follow it.
Didn't know anything about all this slotting, etc.

Seems very positive though that we may get some key pieces back on campus.

I agree it's not likely but if his hit tool and power are as advertised I think he will make plenty of money by the time he's done in the red and white.

If I'm not mistaken Tre Turner had his ability to stick at SS question either out of HS or out of college. Lot of these guys don't know much of what they are looking at....
Poor comparison. Trea Turner is fast and could play any OF position. Tommy White is big and slow. That plays just fine in college though.

Like I said, I'm all for him showing up in Raleigh and breaking every school and conference batting record and being a top 5 pick.
I agree CLT....and Trea wasn't ready to play infield when he got drafted either. They moved him to center and taught him, with his range, to have softer hands and better glove work. He has turned into a good defensive shortstop. Not the best but with his offense, he is an all star.

I don't have much trust in Boo these days, but at this point, we should stick every damn NIL opportunity available to this team. Hire them an entire marketing department. Sell out baseball. Let's ****ing go!!!

No, they can only do 125. Anything over 125 goes against their cap.

The Rogers tweet was bizarre and looks like it may have been wrong. I also think these guys are worth more than 125k based on the season they had *shrug*

Ethan is probably better equipped to answer that. I honestly don't know how to answer it.

I know what I "think" I know but it's probably wrong. lol

I "think" it's anything over $100,000 is deducted from the bonus pool. So you sign for $200K, $100K comes from the bonus pool of the team.

Not sure if that's right though.

As for the SS question, not all of those dudes will play SS on the professional level.

I would think Tresh would/could come back b/c he has another leverage year to bet on himself getting better.

I'd wager Jonny is gone. He can probably get a decent bonus above $125K.

I think Tresh will be back. Butler I'm not sure. If it weren't for Rogers tweet, I'd say he signs, but I also think he should cost more than the $125k (same with Tatum). Of course I could be wrong there. If his number is higher than that, will the teams have enough in the pool to get them? I dunno

Tresh will definitely be back. If I were Butler or Tatum I would feel I was worth more but that's JMO

The problem with Butler is what more can he do? Statistically it would be hard to have a better year. I'm not sure how he improves his stock.

The only argument I can make is that there should be a lesser pool of other players for next year's draft. This year was loaded due to last year's draft only being 5 rounds.

FWIW, Josh McLain and Brock Deatherage were taken in the 14th and 29th rounds respectively as juniors and both returned for senior year

McLain was drafted in the 9th round (signed for $7,500) and Brock was drafted in the 10th round (signed for $10K) as seniors.

If it's about the money, Butler and Tatum, etc should sign now b/c it's not going to get better for the most part.

Evan Edwards is the only example I can think of that probably made out better, of course he wasn't drafted as a JR so there's that.

Well, looks like Will Taylor is going to Clemson, he ain't signing in the 19th round. Now the big question is will Dabo talk him out of playing baseball. He did that to Tanner Muse several years ago. It's why Tanner choose Clemson too. Dabo said he could play baseball as well and then talked him out of it once he was on campus. haha
