The Shnaider effect, stellar weekend help Wolfpack women's tennis make a statement

https://www.technicianonline.com/sports/the-shnaider-effect-stellar-weekend-help-wolfpack-women-s-tennis-make-a-statement/article_38543a02-a778-11ed-a9e4-bbba87b228fc.html

Shnaider's insertion to the lineup doesn't just impact her court, though. She provides an instant boost to NC State's depth as a whole, especially in singles. With the freshman rightfully assuming duties on court one, the rest of the Pack's talented singles roster moved down a court, creating an airtight roster stocked with experienced players from courts one through six.

"The Diana move at [court] one, because she put everyone down a spot, is definitely why we won these last couple of matches," said graduate student Alana Smith. "Our lineup on [courts] four, five and six is just pretty solid. I think we can definitely compete with all the top teams down there."

Wow, Rencheli moved down to #5? For reference, she was playing #2 for us most of last year. She was ranked #25 in singles at the beginning of this year, and beat the #1 player in the country (Emma Navarro of UVA) in the NCAA singles tournament in the spring of 2022, and advanced to the round of 16 I believe.

Rencheli had a minor knee injury (tweak?) at the Illinois match back on January 28, a couple weeks ago. She went down on the court, wailing in pain, and laid there for a couple minutes. But remarkably, she finished the match (limping a little bit at first) and then even played the next day versus Vanderbilt, with a sleeve on her knee. And she's been playing ever since. So obviously it must have been a super minor injury. I have no inside information, but I wonder if she is 100% healthy and if anything is still bothering her.

But, Rajecki and Abrams have been playing very well so far this year, and have improved significantly from last year. Either way, our lineup at singles has the potential to be very formidable, as evidenced by having a player of Rencheli's quality at #5.

I've been to the last four matches. Miller has been there, but not fully dressed out and does not warm up with the team prior to the matches. She doesn't appear to have a boot of any sort on, and does not move around in a way as if to show any injury. She walks around at a normal pace. She interacts with her teammates throughout the matches, and seems to be in good spirits. So, I can only assume she must have a somewhat minor injury, and will hopefully be back playing again soon.

10th-ranked NC State women's tennis (5-1) dismissed #20 California (2-3) as the Wolfpack dominated with a 4-0 shutout.
From the get-go, doubles play belonged to the Pack as they only let up one game to the Bears. Gina Dittman and Amelia Rajecki paired back up on court three and did not even give their opponents a chance to get on the scoreboard. On court two Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli secured the doubles point not long after to put the Wolfpack ahead. The newer exciting pair on court one, Diana Shnaider and Alana Smith were well on their way to grabbing another win but play was halted once court two clinched.
Moving onto singles play in the lead, No. 35 Rencheli tallied the first singles point as she commanded her opponent and only gave up one game in her two sets. Shnaider on court one and No. 19 Rajecki on court three completed in a similar fashion as they both made quick work as well. No. 15 Smith on court two, No. 64 Abrams on court four, and Dittmann on court six went unfinished as Rajecki was the fourth team point to reach the Wolfpack win.

After playing three consecutive ranked opponents and claiming three ranked wins, it's safe to say No. 10 NC State women's tennis is red-hot and has hit its stride in 2023.
The most recent of those wins came via a dominant 4-0 sweep of the No. 20 California Bears on Sunday, Feb. 12, where the Wolfpack effortlessly dismantled yet another ranked opponent after downing both Oklahoma and Tennessee last week.
The 4-0 win came by way of a seamless doubles round by the Pack. With a 1-0 lead, NC State (5-1) kept its foot on the gas, winning three straight-set singles matches to defeat the Bears (2-3).

The Wolfpack outscored Cal 12-1 in terms of game score in the doubles round. Juniors Gina Dittman and Amelia Rajecki blanked their opponents on court three 6-0, and juniors Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli finished off the Pack's ruthless round with a 6-1 win.
With the early edge, NC State easily took the next three singles courts it needed to claim the 4-0 clinch victory. No. 35 Rencheli was the first to draw blood in singles, disposing of her Cal opponent 6-0, 6-1.

Next, freshman Diana Shnaider unsurprisingly found success on court one, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-3. The freshman remains a perfect three for three in singles matches on the season and continues to show why she's one of the best players in college tennis.
With Shnaider's win moving the Pack into clinch position at 3-0, No. 19 Rajecki finished the job, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court three to clinch another impressive win for the Wolfpack.
Play was stopped due to the clinch, but NC State's other courts looked promising as well. No. 15 graduate student Alana Smith and Dittman had nearly clinched the match on their respective courts before Rajecki beat them to it, and Abrams was also deep into her second set after winning her first when time was called.
With the impressive win, NC State moves to 5-1 on the season, competing at a completely different level over its last three matches when compared to its close loss to Vanderbilt in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
After the win against Cal, the Wolfpack turns its attention to its 2023 ACC-opener against Wake Forest. First serve in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is set for Friday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
