3 NC State

@packwtennis made history these past few years reaching one program milestone after the next, ultimately ascending to be a NCAA title contender. Will an unprecedented recruit in @wta #110 Diana Shnaider help the Wolfpack reach another milestone? We make the case on the @crackedracquets Great Shot Podcast!

Here's the podcast previewing the Wolfpack women for 2023:

Here's some discussion of Diana Shnaider, and her future with NC State.

Discussion of Shnaider on the Cracked Racquets podcast (from 16:45- 24:00). They say that if Shnaider plays for the Wolfpack, that makes the NC State women a national title contender. With her current WTA #109 ranking, she would be the most elite and highest ranked player to play in the NCAA in many, many years.
https://crackedracquets.com/podcast/great-shot-podcast-221201/

Very good discussion of Shnaider on the "No Ad No Problem" podcast (from 3:40 - 16:30 in the podcast). They believe that Shnaider will play for NC State this spring, but probably a somewhat limited schedule (mainly the big matches), while also playing some pro events during the college schedule. Shnaider is currently at 109 in the WTA rankings, and almost able to enter the main draw at the 2023 Australian Open with that ranking. With her current ranking, she will likely be playing the qualification rounds in order to try to get into the main draw at the Australian Open. They believe that if Shnaider were to make the main draw at the Australian Open, it would be hard to believe that she would not turn pro, because that type of money would be too big to turn down, and then she would be inside the top 100 of the WTA rankings (when you start making good money on the tour).

NC State women's tennis earned the best preseason ranking in program history as it was tabbed the No. 3 team in the ITA Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll on Wednesday.

The Wolfpack has now started in the national top 10 four seasons in a row. NC State has been featured in the national top 15 of every rankings release since Feb. 26, 2019 and in the national top 10 of every rankings release since April 7, 2021.

The Wolfpack is coming off its second-straight NCAA Tournament quarterfinals appearance and tied its program-best final ranking of No. 6 last year. The squad went 26-6 overall and 10-3 in conference play in 2022, with those 26 victories marking the most in a single season in team history.

NC State returns five players from that 2021-22 squad, including 2022 NCAA doubles champion Nell Miller and All-Americans Abigail Rencheli and Alana Smith. Sophie Abrams and Amelia Rajecki also return to the Pack, and the squad welcomes four newcomers U.S. Junior Open doubles champion Diana Shnaider, NAU transfer Gina Dittmann and freshmen Chloe Henderson and Anna Zyryanova.

Following fall play, NC State had three players in the singles top 25. Smith (No. 13), Rajecki (No. 23) and Rencheli (No. 25) were within that threshold, and Abrams (No. 97) was also ranked in singles. NC State is one of only three programs nationally to have at least three singles players in the top 25.

Two Wolfpack pairs are ranked in doubles as well Rajecki and Miller at No. 8 and Rencheli and Abrams at No. 60. The next set of singles and doubles rankings will be released Feb. 8.

NC State kicks off 2023 action at the Miami Spring Invite from Jan. 13-15 before stepping into dual match action at South Carolina on Jan. 21. The first chance to catch the Wolfpack at home will be ITA Kick-Off Weekend, with the team's first match in that tournament scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28.

The third-ranked NC State women's tennis team is headed to Coral Gables, Fla., for the Miami Spring Invite from Jan. 13-15. This Invite will kick off 2023 action for the team before it heads to South Carolina next weekend for the start of dual match competition.

Facing players from several ranked teams, the Wolfpack is set to take on competitors from No. 1 Texas and No. 20 Vanderbilt in addition to the ACC host, Miami. The three-day tournament will consist of individual singles and doubles match-ups. The tentative schedule of play is as follows:

Friday: Doubles vs. Vanderbilt (NB 11:30 a.m.), Singles vs. Texas (NB 12:45 p.m.)

Saturday: Doubles vs. Texas (NB 1 p.m.), Singles vs. Miami (NB 2:15 p.m.)

Sunday: Doubles vs. Miami (9 a.m.), Singles vs. Vanderbilt (NB 10:15 a.m.)

Making headway into the 2023 tilt, the team boasts its best preseason ranking in program history, marking the fourth season in a row starting among the national top 10.

Last year, NC State earned its second-straight NCAA Tournament quarterfinals appearance and tied its program-best final ranking of No. 6. Overall in 2022, the squad went 26-6, which marked the most in a single season in team history. In conference play, the Wolfpack finished 10-3 among a fiercely-competitive ACC group.

Bringing back their dominant experience, the 2022 NCAA doubles champion Nell Miller and All-Americans Abigail Rencheli and Alana Smith will return to the court. Coming off of a favorable fall campaign, Sophie Abrams and Amelia Rajecki will also return. Four newcomers to the program welcome talent from all over, including U.S. Junior Open doubles champion Diana Shnaider, NAU transfer Gina Dittman and freshmen Chloe Henderson and Anna Zyryanova.

Of that crew, three players were recognized among the top 25 in singles following fall play Smith (No.13), Rajecki (No. 23), and Rencheli (No. 25), with Abrams (No. 97) rounding out the top 100. In doubles, Rajecki and Miller are No. 8, in addition to Rencheli and Abrams at No. 60 among those rankings.

Following the Miami Spring Invite, NC State will hit the road for its first regular-season competition at South Carolina.

No. 3 NC State women's tennis checked off its first action of 2023 this past weekend as seven Wolfpack members participated in the Miami Spring Invite from Friday through Sunday.

Over the three days, NC State competed against members from No. 1 Texas, No. 20 Vanderbilt and the ACC host Miami. In addition to securing 10 singles victories, each of the doubles pairs representing the Wolfpack also picked up at least one win. The dynamic doubles pair coming into the season, No. 8 Miller and Rajecki went undefeated for the weekend.

The tournament showcased new members, as transfer Gina Dittmann and freshmen Chloe Henderson and Anna Zyryanova represented the Wolfpack in their spring debuts. 2022 NCAA doubles champion Nell Miller, All-American Abigail Rencheli, Sophie Abrams and Amelia Rajecki all brought a wealth of returning experience as well.

Coming off her favorable fall play, Rajecki did not see a loss the entire weekend as she participated in singles and doubles. Miller, her doubles partner, also was a dominant force as she only faced one loss across both categories.

NC State officially kicks off dual action as it travels to Columbia, S.C. this weekend and faces off against South Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.

No. 3 NC State women's tennis started its 2023 season in strong fashion, handily taking down South Carolina on the road, on Saturday, Jan. 21.

While the Wolfpack (1-0) is toting a new and reloaded roster as compared to its 2022 squad, the win was a routine one. The hosting Gamecocks (0-1) had little to no answers for the Pack's potent lineup, losing the early doubles point and five out of six singles matches for a 6-1 result.

It was rare for NC State to lose the doubles round in 2022, and the Pack picked up where it left off, winning the early doubles point thanks to two new sets of doubles duos. Fifth-year senior Nell Miller and junior Amelia Rajecki beat their Gamecock opponents 7-5, and while junior Abigail Rencheli and freshman Anna Zyryanova fell in their match, junior Sophie Abrams graduate student Alana Smith won 6-4.

With four NC State players ranked in singles, the Pack proceeded to roll through the next round, winning five out of six singles matches on the way to victory. No. 23-ranked Rajecki downed her opponent 6-4, 6-1, and her fellow junior, the No. 25-ranked Rencheli, rolled through her Gamecock opponent 6-2, 6-3. The No. 97-ranked Abrams did the same as her counterparts, cruising through her singles match 6-1, 6-3.

Miller won her singles match in the only three-setter of the day. After winning her first set but dropping the second, she won her superbreaker 10-4 to claim another Wolfpack singles win. Newcomer and junior Gina Dittman won in dominating fashion in her NC State debut, crushing her opponent 6-1, 6-1.

The only NC State loss of the day came from a heated ranked singles match on court one. South Carolina's No. 20 Ayana Akli got the better of NC State's No. 13-ranked Smith in two sets.

After breezing through its season-opener against the Gamecocks, the Wolfpack is set to make its home debut against Illinois as it hosts multiple teams in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

NC State will battle Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m.

Third-ranked NC State women's tennis (1-0) polished off their win column by officially marking in it for the first time in 2023. The Wolfpack traveled home victorious with a 6-1 conquest after defeating South Carolina (0-1).

Setting the precedent strong, doubles pair Sophie Abrams and Alana Smith secured the first win for the day as they won 6-4 over the Gamecocks. Newly paired doubles match, Abigail Rencheli and Anna Zyryanova faced a loss in a gritty match, finishing just short at 4-6. Bringing back their undoubted talent and hefty experience, Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki clinched the doubles point as they battled for a 7-5 decision.

A roster full of ranked players that didn't come to mess around set quite the standard as they came in and only dropped one match out of the six total battles. Newcomer, Gina Dittmann fit right in comfortably as she dominated her opponent and picked up her first win as a member of the pack, scoring 6-1, 6-1. A strong battle from Miller delivered a win after playing the only three-set match of the day. The ranked returning squad consisting of Abrams, Rajecki and Rencheli got business done as they each had commanding two-set wins.

A ranked matchup between No. 13 Smith and South Carolina's No. 20 Ayana Akli forced the only singles loss for the red & white. Before the defeat took place to give the Gamecocks their only point for the day, the Wolfpack were already up 3-0 thanks to Rajecki, Dittmann and the already-decided doubles point.

The competition will commence as NC State takes on Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. in addition to a Sunday match with either Vanderbilt or Furman.

If she does end up playing for the Wolfpack, I've listened to some of the "experts" (on podcasts I posted previously in this thread) that Shnaider would not play a full schedule for NC State. She would probably only play in the "bigger" matches -- eg, against highly ranked opponents in the regular season, and in the championships. Also, if Shnaider were to play for NC State, she would likely keep playing various WTA tournaments during the time period of the collegiate season (in which she might miss some of the college matches).

So, the fact that Shnaider did not play this past weekend against South Carolina doesn't really tell us much of anything as to whether she will end up playing for us.

Indoor national championships (64 team tournament) start this weekend with the first two rounds at NC State. This tournament would certainly qualify as important. Do you think we will see the debut of Diana Saturday? Any chance we will know before 11 am and Saturday? I definitely want to be in the building if she plays. If she is in town (and not at a WTA event) I would hope we would see her. Anyone with scoop keep me posted.
