While it wasn't always smooth sailing, the No. 3 NC State women's tennis team got the job done in its 2023 home-opener, besting Illinois 4-0 in the Pack's first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

The Fighting Illini (1-1) stayed true to their namesake, battling the Wolfpack (2-0) for each and every point throughout the match. But while the Illini didn't go down easy, they were no match for NC State as the home side pushed through for its second win of the season.

The Illini came out swinging, giving the Wolfpack a run for its money in the early doubles round. The first two courts finished simultaneously, with both teams claiming a 6-3 win. Graduate student Alana Smith and freshman Anna Zyryanova won in admirable fashion, but with juniors Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli falling to their opponents, all eyes turned to court one where the No. 8-ranked pair of fifth-year Nell Miller and junior Amelia Rajecki were fighting just to stay alive.

The Pack's top-10 doubles pair found itself down 5-4 and later 6-5 to its opponent. Miller and Rajecki weren't fazed, however, and hung around long enough to take the match to a tiebreak. Once there, the pair didn't mess around, winning the breaker 7-3 thanks to some heroic efforts from Miller on match point to claim the 1-0 advantage in dramatic fashion.

In the following singles round, NC State did more of the same, persevering through some tough circumstances to ultimately come out on top. However, Zyryanova's match-clinching win on court six was the highlight of the round and, along with her earlier doubles win, represented the newcomer's first victories of many with the Pack.

"[Clinching] is really special, especially while playing at home and playing for NC State," Zyryanova said. "Also, it's my first win in doubles and singles, and I'm just really happy to be here and to win this match."

The freshman's win is all the more impressive considering her circumstances. Zyryanova joined the team mere weeks ago and wasn't even supposed to play singles until the last minute. But it was clear that the Russian embraced the pressure in her home debut, winning her match 6-4, 7-5 to put the contest away.

"I was quite nervous before the match because I wasn't supposed to play singles," Zyryanova said. "I was really happy to play, and it was hard because I'm a freshman and I've only been here for three weeks. There was a lot of pressure while playing, but it was really good."

The first NC State singles win came by way of another NC State newcomer, junior Gina Dittman. She cruised through her singles match for a relatively uneventful 6-2, 6-2 win that put the Pack up 2-0. Abrams, who is ranked at No. 97 in the nation, did the same, handily beating her opponent 6-2, 6-3 to put the Pack into clinch position.

While Zyryanova, Dittman and Abrams provided the necessary singles wins to clinch the match at 4-0, the rest of NC State's players met some traction on the remaining courts.

The No. 13-ranked Smith pulled out a tough first-set win in tiebreak and was met with even more resistance by her Illini opponent in her second set before play was stopped. Meanwhile, the No. 23-ranked Rajecki split her first two sets before her match was put to a halt.

Additionally, the No. 25-ranked Rencheli seemed to have a scary injury early on in her first set. After some time, the junior was able to get back on the court to continue play but was seemingly limited by the lower-body injury. As one of the most important and strongest players on the team, Rencheli's status will be critical moving forward.

Even with the 4-0 win, NC State didn't quite live up to its potential or its sky-high standards against Illinois. There was a lot left out on the courts, and a stronger performance will be necessary if the Pack is to down its next opponent tomorrow in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

"[Tomorrow's match] is going to be tough," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "We're going to have to play a lot better and we're going to have to manage a lot of things to enable us to be in a headspace where we can allow that performance to happen."

While the red-and-white still doesn't know if it will face Furman or Vanderbilt on Sunday, Jan. 29, the Pack will aim to up its level regardless of its opponent. Play at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium is set for 2 p.m.

Third-ranked NC State women's tennis (2-0) took a 4-0 win over Illinois (1-1) on Saturday, Jan. 28 to commence ITA Kickoff Weekend.

A win tomorrow would lock in a trip to Seattle, Wash., for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. This potential trip would be the team's fourth time in the last five years.

To kick off the Pack's day with doubles, Alana Smith and Anna Zyryanova took an early lead and grabbed the first win with a 6-3 decision. Meanwhile, Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli fell behind and lost 3-6 to the Fighting Illini.

Over on court one, the No. 8 ranked pair Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki kept everyone on their toes. Coming from behind to force the tiebreaker, the duo then dominated the breaker to finalize the doubles point for the Wolfpack.

Breezing through singles play, Gina Dittmann cruised and secured the first win 6-2, 6-2. Over on court four, No. 97 ranked Sophie Abrams took care of business in the same fashion with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

After going ahead 3-0 to start the match, Zyryanova battled through two sets and came out on top 6-4, 7-5 to settle the match.

At the time of the clinch, play over on courts one, two and three was consistently taunting back and forth.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

The NC State baseball team will tell you firsthand that there's never a shortage of drama when the Wolfpack faces off against Vanderbilt. And it was no different in the NC State women's tennis team's match against the Commodores.

This time, it was in a knockdown, dragout match that went down with the wire, but the contest still ended in Vanderbilt getting the better of the red-and-white.

The Wolfpack (2-1) started its second match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend strong, winning the doubles point and the first singles match with relative ease to gain a 2-0 lead. Things ramped up from there, however, with the visiting Commodores (3-0) fighting tooth and nail for the remaining courts. Despite some heroic efforts from the Wolfpack, that determined effort ultimately paid off, allowing Vanderbilt to win four of the next five matches to claim the 4-3 win.

When the dust settled, Vanderbilt won three out of the four three-set singles matches on the day. In nearly every one of those matches, NC State found itself down early in the first sets, making it all the more difficult for the red-and-white to defeat its opponents.

"We just didn't make great starts in the first sets," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "If you play from behind for long enough, eventually you'll end up behind."

The one three-setter that did go the Wolfpack's way was junior Sophie Abrams' match. After winning a gritty first set 7-5, she lost her next one 6-1 but stormed back in the third for a crucial match win, one that put NC State in clinch position at 3-1.

From there, though, the Commodores slowly turned the match. Vanderbilt first knocked off freshman Anna Zyryanova in three sets to make it 3-2. Juniors Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli battled valiantly on the two remaining courts and both had plenty of heart-stopping moments in the latter halves of their matches. But in heartbreaking fashion for the numerous Wolfpack fans in attendance, the two NC State veterans couldn't pull out either of their matches.

Even in her loss, the No. 23-ranked Rajecki pulled off one of the most memorable moments of the match in a bout on court two. After losing her first set, Rajecki found herself down 40-15 at 5-2. With match point looming high over everyone's heads, the junior didn't let it faze her. Rajecki did the unthinkable, not just winning the game, but winning five of her next six, the last of which was in tiebreak, to push the match to a third set.

Rajecki continued to fight hard, and despite her best efforts, eventually lost her third set 7-5. With the scoreline at 3-3, all eyes turned to court three, where the No. 25 ranked Rencheli was in her own slugfest with her Commodore opponent. While the junior clutched out a 7-5 second set win after dropping her first, she couldn't get it going in the third, eventually losing 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 as the Commodores completed the comeback.

The only mellow parts of the day's events came at the beginning of the match. NC State won the doubles point thanks to respective 6-3 wins from the pairs of graduate student Alana Smith and Zyryanova and junior Gina Dittman and Rencheli. The No. 13 ranked Smith then cruised through her singles match, winning 6-2, 6-4 on court one to give the Pack a 2-0 lead. Soon after though, Dittman lost just as quickly as Smith won, allowing the Commodores to get back into the match.

With the loss, NC State will miss out on its chance to compete at the ITA Indoor Championships, meaning it'll lose out on the opportunity to add some quality wins to its resume. But just because it doesn't have those opportunities, doesn't mean the job gets any easier from here. Just next weekend, the Pack is set to face two more ranked opponents No. 22 Tennessee and No. 17. Oklahoma. And if NC State is to recoup from the loss to Vanderbilt, those games should be considered must-wins.

"We're going to have to win if we want to have any chance to host a Regional or Super Regional," Earnshaw said. "This early in the season, we have to win those matches because now we're not going to get the matches that everybody else is going to get at the National Indoors, which is quality opportunities against quality opponents."

Falling behind early in sets and losing a majority of three-set singles matches won't fly against these two talented programs, but NC State has the talent and ability to get to 4-1 after the weekend.

"Look, neither of those [matches] will be easy," Earnshaw said. "They're both quality teams and programs and this is why we schedule them."

NC State's showdown with the Sooners is set for Saturday, Feb. 4 at noon.

Third-ranked NC State women's tennis (2-1) battled to fight back against No. 21 Vanderbilt (3-0) but came up short in the end.

Switching up the doubles pairing from yesterday was no issue for the Wolfpack as it took care of business quickly. Gina Dittmann matched up with Amelia Rajecki to take on the No. 55 ranked Vanderbilt squad and were victorious first with a 6-3 decision. Shortly after, Alana Smith and Anna Zyryanova took up the second win with the same score to declare the doubles point for NC State.

The singles competition led to a hard back and forth fight between the two teams. No. 13 Smith handled business as usual, as she took down Vanderbilt's No. 33 Mohr 6-2, 6-4. The only other singles win for the day was No. 97 Abrams, who earned her victory after battling through three sets and two of those being tiebreakers.

All six singles courts were played out, as it came down to third sets on the last three singles courts before Vanderbilt ultimately collected its win.

Tenth-ranked NC State women's tennis (2-1) will remain at home this week as they welcome No. 15 Oklahoma (5-2) and No. 22 Tennessee (3-1) for weekend play.

The Wolfpack is taking on two ranked matchups after coming off a heartbreaking 3-4 upset loss to Vanderbilt last weekend.

A win over Oklahoma would be the program's first win over the Sooners, with losses against them from 1993 and 2018. The series between the Volunteers and Wolfpack is much lengthier, making this the 10th competition between them. NC State is leading the series 5-4, as they have won the last four meetings between the two in the last several years.

All matches this weekend will be streamed live on TrackTennis (links below), and live scores are available here. The order of this weekend's matches is as follows:
