NC State men's tennis team members Martins Rocens and Fons Van Sambeek are set to begin action at the ITA Fall National Championships Thursday, Nov. 4. The tournament will be competed at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

The duo earned an at-large doubles bid to the tournament after a strong outing at the ITA Carolina Regional. Rocens and Van Sambeek made a run to the semifinals at the regional, taking down three doubles opponents in the process.

The doubles round of 32 will begin Thursday, Nov. 4, and doubles competition will continue through Sunday, Nov. 7.

Draws for Fall Nationals will be announced at a later time. Fans can follow @PackMensTennis on Twitter for updates about draws, match times and results.

NC State men's tennis doubles pair Martins Rocens and Fons Van Sambeek concluded competition at the ITA Fall National Championships on Friday, reaching the second round of the tournament while fellow members of the squad began action at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational

ITA FALL NATIONALS RECAP
Play began on Thursday, and the duo charted a top-40 win with a victory over No. 37 Gabriel Diallo and Francois Musitelli (Kentucky) by a score of 6-2, 6-2. On day two of the tournament, Rocens and Van Sambeek faced off against Pedro Vives Marcos and Lui Maxted of TCU.

The Wolfpack duo kept the scores close, but ultimately Vives Marcos and Maxted took home the win in a 6-4, 7-5 decision.

"It was a great tournament for Martins and Fons," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "I'm so happy that they got to play against the nation's elite and thrive in this amazing competitive environment."

WAKE FOREST FALL INVITATIONAL RECAP
Yannai Barkai logged a singles win in the A2 East draw, taking down Tennessee Tech's Elias Grubert 6-2, 6-3.

Barkai added a doubles win on the day with partner Joseph Wayand. The pair defeated Daniel Martin and Nicholas Campbell of Elon in a 7-5 decision.

  • NC State men's tennis team members Yannai Barkai and Joseph Wayand continued action at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational on Saturday, competing in a singles and a doubles match each.



Wayand fell to Charlotte's Thomas Brown in the Singles A1 West region of the bracket by a score of 6-3, 6-2 while Niroop Vallabhaneni of Duke defeated Yannai Barkai in a three-setter, winning in a 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 decision.

The duo paired up for doubles action as well, competing against Tim Gennes and Fabian Penzkofer of Stetson. Barkai and Wayand ultimately feel to the Stetson pair in a close 7-6(3) match.

The NC State men's tennis program has released its 2022 schedule, as announced by head coach Kyle Spencer on Monday.

The schedule features seven teams that were ranked in top 25 of the final 2021 ITA Rankings in addition to 15 squads that tabbed a spot in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Fans can attend home matches for free. For indoor matches, masks are required.


The Wolfpack opens the season Monday, Jan. 17 with a doubleheader against Northwestern (11 a.m.) and Presbyterian (4 p.m.) followed by a second doubleheader Thursday, Jan. 20 against Princeton (12 p.m.) and Campbell (5 p.m.).

NC State travels to Oxford, Miss., Jan 28-29 to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Wolfpack's first matchup will see the squad take on Illinois (Jan. 28) while the team will take on either Oklahoma or host school Ole Miss Jan. 29.

Seven home matches are slated to take place in February, beginning with Georgia Friday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. and UCF Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. The three-match home stint concludes with a 12 p.m. matchup against NC Central Saturday, Feb. 12.

The ITA National Indoor Championship is set to take place Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash.

NC State rounds out February with a pair of doubleheaders. The team will take on Radford (2 p.m.) and NC A&T (6 p.m.) Thursday, Feb. 24 before competing against Boston College (12 p.m.) and Elon (4 p.m.) Sunday, Feb. 27.

March opens with a 3 p.m. home match against South Carolina Tuesday, March 1.

The Wolfpack begins a seven-match road stretch at Florida State Friday, March 4 before playing at Miami Sunday, March 6. NC State will make the short trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., Thursday, March 10 to take on Wake Forest.

Away action continues Friday, March 25 at Virginia and Sunday, March 27 at Virginia Tech. The road matches wrap up with a Friday, April 1 matchup at Louisville and a Sunday, April 3 competition at Notre Dame.

The final four regular-season matches are set to be played in Raleigh, beginning with Georgia Tech Friday, April 8 (6 p.m.) and Clemson Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m. Duke visits the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. before the Wolfpack welcomes North Carolina to Raleigh for a 12 p.m. match Sunday, April 17.

The ACC Championships will take place in Rome, Ga., April 20-24. Postseason continues with the NCAA First and Second Rounds May 6-8, followed by the Super Regionals May 13-15 and the NCAA Championship and Individual Championships May 19-28.

Princeton will open its 2022 dual match slate in Raleigh, its first since the 2020 season.

The Tigers' roster is experienced with five seniors, and two juniors. The squad competed in the fall, most recently charting six singles wins and two doubles wins at the Navy Fall Invitational.

In its first matches of the season, the NC State men's tennis team (2-0) came away with victories over Princeton (0-1) and Campbell (0-1) on Thursday.

The Pack began the day with a 6-1 win over Princeton that saw a Wolfpack doubles point and four singles wins, and in the second phase of the home doubleheader the squad did not drop a doubles or singles competition.

DOUBLES VS. PRINCETON
NC State opened up the scoring, claiming the doubles point. The duo of Robin Catry and Lucas Staeheli captured the first win, defeating Bill Duo and Adam Kam 6-2.

Martins Rocens and Fons Van Sambeek secured the second doubles victory for the team over Damian Rodriguez and Filippos Astreinidis, 6-3.

After the Wolfpack clinched the doubles point, the third match between NC State's Yannai Barkai and Collin Shick and Princeton's Ryan Seggerman and Will Peters was halted at 5-5.

SINGLES VS. PRINCETON
NC State got off to a hot start in singles action, increasing the team score lead to 3-0. Rocens secured the first singles point in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, against Peters. Following right behind, Luca Staeheli recorded a win over Duo 6-2, 6-3.

Princeton gained a win to make it 3-1, the overall team victory was clinched by No. 36 Robin Catry. Catry dropped the first set in a competitive three-set match but ultimately was able to get the 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win, defeating Rodriguez.

After the deciding match, play between the two teams continued. Van Sambeek earned a straight-set win, 6-1, 6-4, over Kam. In the final match, Braden Shick rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to win 6-3, 6-4 versus Astreinidis.

DOUBLES VS. CAMPBELL
In the second phase of the Wolfpack's doubleheader, the squad did not drop a singles or doubles competition.

The duo of Joseph Wayand and Joseph Schrader earned a 6-3 win over Ted Williams and Gustavs Lukstins mere minutes after teammates Barkai and Collin Shick prevailed over 27th-ranked Tomas Balazi and Leon Petko in a 6-3 victory.

SINGLES VS. CAMPBELL
Rocens brought home the first singles win of the match against the Camels, getting a quick 6-2, 6-1 win over Nezar to move to 2-0 in singles competition on the day.

After claiming the tiebreaker in the first set, Braden Shick cruised in the second and dropped just one game. He took down Balazi by a score of 7-6(2), 6-1.

It was Staeheli who clinched the match for NC State with a straight-set win over Pol Otin. The match remained close throughout, but Staeheli earned the 7-5, 6-3 victory to secure NC State's 2-0 start to the season.

Damien Salvestre and Joe Schrader won their respective singles matches as play continued with Salvestre defeating Robin Angles 7-6(4), 6-4. Schrader dropped the first set but fought back to take the match 6-7(9), 6-4, 1-0(5).

Van Sambeek rounded out the wins in the matchup with his 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Noe MacQuart.

The NC State men's tennis team (2-0) is set to compete at the Oxford, Miss., regional of the ITA Kickoff Jan. 29-30.

Each team will play two matches during the weekend. If NC State wins both matches, it will punch its ticket to the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships hosted by Washington Feb. 18-21.

The Pack will compete against No. 25 Illinois (1-1) Friday, Jan. 29 at 5 p.m EST after 18th-ranked Ole Miss (3-0) and No. 22 Oklahoma (5-0) play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 will see NC State take on either Oklahoma or Ole Miss. The consolation match will take place Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. EST and the championship match is slated for 3 p.m. EST.

Junior Robin Catry currently holds a singles ranking of No. 36 in the ITA singles rankings, a career-high placement.

SCOUTING THE ILLINI
Illinois opened dual match play with a doubleheader, falling to then-No. 6 Ohio State, 4-0, before defeating Chicago State in a 4-0 decision.

Currently, three members of the Illinois squad are ranked in the ITA singles rankings. Olivier Stuart maintains the highest ranking at No. 97 and is followed by Alex Brown (No. 113) and Kweisi Kenyatte (No. 116).

Oklahoma remains undefeated in 2022 with a 5-0 record. Most recently, the Sooners defeated Nebraska, 5-2

A trio of Sooners singles competitors are ranked with Mason Beiler checking in at 31st, Mark Mandlik sitting at 49th and Jordan Hasson holding the No. 54 position.

SCOUTING THE REBELS
Ole Miss has charted wins over Tennessee State and Alabama to begin its season 3-0.

Nikola Slavic is ranked 28th in the ITA singles rankings, and Finn Reynolds checks in at No. 44. Reynolds is additionally ranked in doubles with John Hallquist Lithen at No. 24.

DOUBLES RECAP
Illinois began doubles competition with a 6-1 win by Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve over Collin Shick and Yannai Barkai at the number one position.

The Wolfpack answered on court three with Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli's 6-2 victory over Alex Brown and Gabrielus Guzauskas.

Competition came down to court two, where the Illini were able to clinch the doubles point with Siphosothando Montsi and Olivier Stuart's 6-2 win against Martin Rocens and Fons Van Sambeek.

Three of NC State's four singles wins came in straight-set fashion, and Damien Salvestre was the first to victory. The Marseille, France, native got a ranked win over No. 113 Brown, 6-3, 6-3.

Salvestre was followed minutes later by Braden Shick's 6-1, 6-3 defeat of No. 116 Guzauskas, but Illinois got a singles win on court two with No. 97 Stuart's 6-3, 6-4 win over Rocens.

Luca Staeheli put NC State one away from clinching with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Heck on court three.

The win was sealed by 36th-ranked Robin Catry, who gutted out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Montsi to send NC State to the regional championship match.
