Ninth-ranked NC State women's tennis officially steps into the 2024 dual-match campaign on Monday as it prepares to host SMU for its first home test this season. Match time with the Mustangs is set for 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15.

The first 50 fans will be treated to free Bojangles Biscuits. Admission is free at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

This will be the seventh overall meeting between the two programs, with the series tied 3-3. The first meeting came in 1990; the two teams hadn't met since 2009 when the Wolfpack traveled to Dallas and were defeated 5-2. NC State did have a three-match win streak between 1998 and 2008.

Following the conclusion of a successful slate of fall action, NC State has five singles players and three double pairs featured in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings that were released in the fall.

Highlighted by Amelia Rajecki, who was ranked No.3, which is the highest ranking ever by a Wolfpack player in program history. Sophie Abrams, after setting the program record with 16 singles wins in the fall, is ranked No.19. Senior Abigail Rencheli checks in at No. 27, Anna Zyryanova at No. 40, and freshman Maddy Zampardo at No. 116 to round out the singles rankings.

In the ITA National doubles rankings, NC State was the only program with two pairs ranked in the top 10. First, No. 7 Rajecki and Zampardo, followed by No. 9 Abrams and Zyryanova. The third Wolfpack pair to be ranked is Broadfoot and Rencheli at No. 52.

SMU Mustangs
Last season, the Mustangs finished with a 16-9 record, going 4-0 in conference play but 2-6 in road matches. The Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2023.

Six Mustangs - Hadley Doyle, Taylor Johnson, Maja Makoric, Lana Mavor, Drew Morris, and Reka Patel - return from last season's roster.

SMU women's tennis earned a pair of ranked wins and one doubles victory in its away matchup against No. 15 Duke in the Mustangs' season opener on Saturday.

The roster has gone from 10 down to 8 in the last several weeks. Chloe Henderson and Reya Lee Coe have left NC State and are now playing at other schools.

Coach Earnshaw said that Paskauskas couldn't play during the fall semester because they were waiting on the NCAA to clear her (eligibility wise). I was a little surprised that she played at 6 singles today, and not Zyryanova...but of course it's hard for fans from the outside looking in to know how the players rank on the team (and for the 2-6 spots in the case of this team), with all of these new players on the team (and obviously not being able to see them compete against each other in practice). Watched the match on the live stream today, and Paskauskas has some nice pop on her serve and ground strokes. If she cleans up some of the unforced errors, I think she could be a good one for us.

Encouraging to see that Zampardo is playing at 3, given how highly ranked she was out of high school.

No. 9 NC State Women's Tennis (1-0) opened its dual match season on Monday afternoon with a decisive 7-0 sweep of SMU (0-2).

The Pack took all seven of the afternoon's matches by winning the doubles point in the minimum two bouts while capturing five two-set wins out of six singles opportunities.

Head coach Simon Earnshaw now moves to 9-1 in opening season games during his tenure at NC State.

Doubles
The Wolfpack took both counted doubles matched by a 6-1 score, with the ninth-ranked pairing of Anna Zyryanova and Sophie Abrams topping SMU's Taylor Johnson and Lana Mavor, while No. 7 Amelia Rajecki and Maddy Zampardo clipped Caroline McGinley and Drew Morris. Gabriella Broadfoot and Abigail Rencheli held a 4-3 lead at the time Rejacki and Zampardo clinched, seeing their match go abandoned.

Singles
No. 19 Abrams got the Wolfpack moving in singles play after she opened the second portion of the match with a pair of 6-1 set wins, giving NC State an early 2-0 edge. Rajecki, who entered the day at third in the ITA singles rankings, put the Pack one point away from clinching by making quick work of Johnson, knocking off the Mustangs' one seed 6-4, 6-2.

No. 116 Zampardo inevitably clinched the match for the Wolfpack with a two-set win over Navor, taking a 6-3, 6-4, decision to give NC State a 4-0 lead and clinch its first win of the 2024 dual match season.

No. 27 Rencheli survived a strong showing from SMU's Morris, as the two split the first two sets and Rencheli won a 10-7 third-set tiebreaker. Gina Dittman later pushed the Wolfpack ahead 6-0, taking a two-set win over Maja Makoric at 6-2, 6-1.

The Pack's final match of the day came down to Kristina Paskauskas and the Mustangs' Milli Skeltone, with Paskauskas using a dominant second set to secure a 6-4, 6-X, win for the Wolfpack and clinch NC State's first sweep of the season.

Up Next
The Pack will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, for a double-header against a pair of in-state foes. NC State will face Campbell at 1 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. contest against North Carolina Central. Both matches will be held at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center with free admission offered to all fans.

The No. 8 ranked Wolfpack (1-0) will look to carry the momentum from their 7-0 victory over SMU in their home opener as they get set to welcome two instate opponents this weekend in Campbell (0-1) and NC Central (0-1).

The action kicks off from the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Saturday, January 20, at 1 p.m., with the Wolfpack taking on Campbell, followed by NC Central at 5 p.m.

All matches this weekend will be streamed live on TrackTennis, and live scores are available here. Both of this weekend's matches are free to attend, and nearby parking is also free of charge.

It was a smooth start for the Wolfpack against the Mustangs last time out, as NC State only dropped a single set on their way to their sixth straight opening season victory.

The Wolfpack moved up a spot to No. 8 in the ITA Division I Women's Top 25 Coaches Poll following their victory over SMU.

With a win in both singles and doubles last time out, senior Sophie Abrams is now one win away from cracking the top 10 all-time in both singles and doubles. A win in singles would give her 72 for her career, putting her in a tie with Tatiana Illova. A win in doubles would be the 62 of her career, tying her with Lenka Hojckova.

Abrams would join fellow teammates Abigail Rencheli and Amelia Rajecki on the list as Rencheli sits in seventh all-time with 84 singles wins and in eighth with 74 double wins. Rajecki, with 83 single wins, is in eighth place, and her 85 double wins put her fourth all-time.

Scouting Campbell
Campbell began their season with a loss to No. 1 North Carolina. The Wolfpack are 6-1 all-time against the Camels, winning the last six straight meetings all by a score of 7-0. Campbell last beat NC State in their first-ever meeting back in 1992.

Scouting NC Central
This will only be the third meeting between NC State and NC Central, with the Wolfpack winning 7-0 in 2014 and 2018. The Eagles are coming off a 7-0 loss to No. 15 Duke.
