Well I guess he was alright, ha.

I said it a week ago, he's a legit national title contender. When he is on, he is dominant in all three phases. Love this kid.

Powered by four individual championships, the NC State Wrestling team claimed its fourth straight ACC Championship Sunday night in Charlottesville, Va. NC State had all 10 wrestlers post a podium finish (top-three) and all 10 wrestlers also automatically qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships in Detroit.

The Pack tied a school record with its fourth straight ACC Championship (1988-91).

NC State captured the team title with 98.5 points. The 98 points scored were the most at the conference tournament since NC State had 103.5 in 2007. Virginia Tech finished second with 76 points. Pitt was third with 51 points, North Carolina fourth (48), Virginia fifth (39.5) and Duke sixth (11).

FINALS
157: #3 Ed Scott vs. #1 Austin O'Connor, UNC
After a scoreless first, Scott started the second with an escape. He then got the bout's lone takedown in the second period to defeat O'Connor, a 2021 National Champion, 3-2 to start the championship round.

184: #1 Trent Hidlay vs. #2 Gavin Kane, UNC
Trent Hidlay went back-to-back ACC titles at 184 pounds, as he won by a convincing 11-0 major decision over UNC's Kane. Hidlay scored three takedowns, a two-point near fall and racked up 5:26 of ride time for the bonus point win that clinched the ACC title for the Pack.

197: #1 Isaac Trumble vs. #2 Nino Bonaccorsi, Pitt
Fr. Isacc Trumble came away with a second place finish in his first trip to the ACC Championship. The top seed fell to 2021 NCAA Finalist Bonaccorsi of Pitt in the final at 197 pounds, 5-2.

285: #2 Tyrie Houghton vs. #1 Nathan Traxler, VT
In his first ACC Championship up at heavyweight, Jr. Tyrie Houghton comes away with a second place finish and qualifies for the NCAA Championships. Houghton fell in the final to top-seed Traxler of VT, 9-6.

125: #2 Jakob Camacho vs. #1 Sam Latona, VT
R-So. Jakob Camacho returned atop the ACC podium at 125 pounds, he won in 2020, with a last-second win over top-seeded Latona of Virginia Tech. With the score tied 1-1 late, Camacho converted the lone takedown of the match with just five seconds left to win 3-1.

141: #3 Ryan Jack vs. #1 Cole Matthews, Pitt
After a top-10 win in the semifinals, Fr. Ryan fell short in his second top-10 matchup of the day and lost to #5 Matthews of Pitt in the final, 3-2. Matthews scored the bout's lone takedown in the first period.

149: #1 Tariq Wilson vs. #2 Bryce Andonian, VT
Gr. Tariq Wilson gets ACC Gold for the second straight year with a 10-4 decision over #8 Andonian of VT in the final. Wilson scored all 4 takedowns in the bout and added in 2:39 of RT.

THIRD PLACE BOUTS
All three Pack wrestlers that saw action in a third place bout, won and came away with a podium finish.

R-Fr. Kai Orine avenged a loss in the dual, and scored a 5-3 decision over second seed Heillman of UNC at 133 pounds. Orine posted a takedown in the second and had 2:09 of ride time and went 3-1 at his first ACC Championship.

Gr. Thomas Bullard used an escape in the second period for the bout's lone point, and scored a top-three ACC placement for the fourth straight year with a 1-0 decision over VT's Ulrey at 165 pounds.

Gr. Hayden Hidlay was down 4-3 in the third vs. Duke's Finesilver but put together a reversal-two-point near fall combo for the 7-6 decision at 174 pounds.

CONSOLATIONS
All three Pack wrestlers that fell in the semifinals won their next bout and advanced to the Third Place matches. Orine scored bonus with a 19-3 tech fall, Bullard's escape was the lone point in his 1-0 win, and Hayden Hidlay secured a second-period pin.

SEMIFINALS
The Pack had all 10 wrestle in the semifinals, and seven came away with victories to reach the finals. All seven winners were automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships.

Camacho was the first to advance to the finals with a trio of takedowns and 1:23 of ride time for an 8-3 decision over Pitt's Curry. Jack had one of the top upsets of the tournament, as he scored a takedown with only four seconds left to down #8 Clarke of UNC 4-3. Wilson advanced past UNC's Sherman 4-2. Scott recorded a pin less than a minute into his bout against UVA's Keating to avenge a loss from the dual. Trent Hidlay used a 14-5 major decision to advance. Trumble had three takedowns and 1:37 of ride time in defeating UNC's Shaw. Houghton had the comeback of the day, down 5-1 entering the third he won in OT 6-5 over UNC's Whitman.

QUARTERFINALS
The Pack won all three of its quarterfinal bouts, all by freshmen.

Orine used a takedown in the first and 1:10 of ride time to down UVA's Courtney 5-2. Jack got the first bonus point win of the day for the Pack, as he used a four-point near fall in the third and 2:51 of ride time for a 20-5 tech fall over Duke's Rowland. Scott closed the round with a takedown in the second and 3:07 of ride time to down Virginia Tech's Brady 5-2.

UP NEXT
The 2022 NCAA Championship seeds will be announced on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The tournament will run March 17-19 from Detroit.

Trent is #3 on WrestleStat which is what I believe Pop said they used for seeding in ACC tournament on his Podcast. Brooks and Amine each only lost to each other so they could get top 2.

Selection Show is tomorrow BTW.

The 2022 ACC Champion NC State wrestling team tied a school record with 10 NCAA qualifiers, and found on its seeds for the 2022 NCAA Championships. The Wolfpack will have four seeded fifth or better, eight in the top-20, and all 10 21st or better.

The 2022 NCAA Championships will take place March 17-19 in Detroit.

For only the second time in school history (2017), the Pack will have all 10 of its starters compete at the NCAA Champions. NC State was one of only three schools nationally (Iowa and Northwestern) with 10 NCAA qualifiers this year

Gr. Tariq Wilson #2 seed at 149 pounds

Gr. Hayden Hidlay - #4 seed at 174 pounds
NC State's only 4-time All-American will go for history as he tries to claim a podium finish once again. Hidlay enters the 2020 NCAAs with a 14-2 mark, and has racked up over 100 career wins.

R-So. Jakob Camacho - #14 seed at 125 pounds
The 2022 ACC Champion will be competing at the NCAA Championships for the second time in his career. He has won 9 of his last 10 matches leading up.

The brackets for the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships were released last night. Here are my instant reactions and a preview of the brackets for all 10 NC State wrestlers.

Jakob Camacho (14) - Jakob gets the 14 seed. This seems fair to me. He has only wrestled 3 guys in the top 25 this year going 1-3 against them after finally beating Latona in the ACC championship. He has won all of his other matches against lesser foes. Jack is ranked 10th according to wrestlestat so the seeding is pretty close. First up he faces the 19 seed from Oklahoma Joey Prata. The name may look familiar because Prata was the 125 for Virginia Tech prior to Sam Latona taking over. They did wrestle in 2020 and Jack won in a 5-4 decision.

Kai Orine (15) - Here is where my first gripe comes with the selection committee. They have Orine and Jack both facing wrestlers from UNC in the first round. They've already wrestled twice this year. The NCAAs is about having all the wrestlers in the nation go against each other so why do they have two guys from the same conference wrestle in the first round. Anyways, this one will be a tossup as Heilmann got the win in the duels and Orine got the win in the ACC Championships.

Ryan Jack (18) - Second verse, same as the first, a little bit louder and a whole lot worse. Again Jack and Clarke have wrestled twice. Clarke won by 1 point in the duel, Jack won by 1 point in the ACC championships. One of the good things about the NCAA tournament is you don't know your opponent as well so matches are more interesting. We are gonna get another slow match decided by 1 point from guys who have already wrestled twice. Yay -__-

Tariq Wilson (2) - This is it. This is Tariq's chance at glory. The last time he was a top 4 seed was last year when he was the 4 seed and finished 3rd. Hopefully the pattern continues an dhe finishes one higher than his seed this year. The top seed was also undefeated and beat better opponents than Wilson. I think Tariq has the best chance of the wolfpack wrestlers at winning a title this year. He's been saving his energy all year, being super efficient and winning all of his matches without putting forth much effort. He has two wins over a top 5 opponent in Bryce Andonian who is actually really good, Tariq just made it look easy. Tariq's first real challenge could come in the quarterfinals against Campbell's Joshua Heil who beat the other top seed in this half of the bracket. They didn't wrestle in the Duel against Campbell that replaced the VT duel in January.

Ed Scott (4) - Initially I was shocked that Ed Scott got a top 4 seed, but after diving deeper into the bracket it makes sense. The top 3 seeds are undefeated and Ed is the only 1 loss wrestler in the bracket. He beat the 5 seed Quincy Monday, the 9 seed Kaleb Young of Iowa, and the 11 seed and reigning 149 national champion Austin O'Conner. His only hiccup came with a last 2nd loss to 14 seed Jake Keating who was just better conditioned than him. Ed Scott could see a rematch with Monday in the quarterfinals before possibly getting a chance at David Carr who ended Hayden Hidlay's chances at a national title last year in the semis.

Thomas Bullard (21) - Thomas came back for his sixth year with the goal of placing at NCAA's and he is off to a rough start with the 21 seed. He will be the underdog in most of his matches and the one hope he has is that his opponents don't have time to watch his tape. It seems like the longer he has been in the ACC the easier it has been for his opponents to beat him. They know his game plan. He doesn't have any offense other than riding you out on top. So what have they done? They just don't go down and Thomas has been losing more and more. Hopefully a change of scenery will help him with his goal of finishing top 8. His first challenge is against a top 10 opponent in Zach Hartmam. Harman has been racking up points this year so we will see if offense wins matches and defense wins championships.

Hayden Hidlay (4) - Hayden got his 5th consecutive top 5 seeding at NCAA's. There isn't much to say about it. He's a national title contender. He came back for his 6th year because he's never won it all. He's been trending down after blowing up on the scene with his only loss of his freshman year coming in the national championship. He has finished 4th and 5th the past two years (NCAA tournament canceled in 2020) and he's hoping to turn it around this year. It's not going to be an easy path either. He has to go through Iowa and Penn State in the quarter finals and semifinals before possibly getting his 3rd shot at Mekhi Lewis in the finals.

Trent Hidlay (3) - Trent has been on an absolute tear this year and he should have been the 1 seed. The committee split up BIG 10 conference foes who split their matches this year in 1 seed Amine (Michigan) and Brooks (Penn St.) Imagine that, splitting up conference opponents so that they don't have to face each other for a third time. (Looking at you 133 and 141) Trent has a rematch of last year's national championship looming in the semifinals against Aaron Brooks. I don't see Trent losing before that they way he has been wrestling.

Isaac Trumble (15) - Not sure how Trumble got stuck with the 15 seed and Bonaccorsi got the 5 seed even though they split their matches this year, had similar records, and Trumble's losses came to better opponents. So his reward for winning his first round matchup his a date with the 2 seed out of Wyoming. Similar to opponents figuring out Bullard; Bonaccorsi came in with a great game plan against Trumble in the ACC championship bout and hopefully his NCAA opponents don't see the film from that one.

Tyrie Houghton (21) - Heavyweight is our biggest weakness and we are going to need Houghton to win some matches if we want a chance at winning a championship as a team. He won't be favored in his first matchup against Christian Lance of Nebraska coming off a grueling schedule in Big 10 dual's and championships.

Camacho is a weird case. It feels like he hasn't improved since his freshman year. He's just good enough to beat someone good but I have a hard time seeing him making a run at NCAAs.

Agree with the Orine and Jack placements, but I think they're both better than their UNC counter-parts and should have some confidence after just beating them each last week.

I don't think Ed Scott is as good as his seed.. yet. Would love for him to prove me wrong. He's a guy I can see being a favorite in a year or two. He needs to just keep himself under control, and understand situations as they come.

Bullard, well, I've talked about him enough. One trick pony.

I actually think we get a good run out of Hayden. I think his mind is in the right place and I could see him getting third with a good weekend.

Tariq has been fantastic this year. I've said it for months, legit national champion contender. Same with Trent. I think Trent's issue will be getting a takedown when he needs it the most late in the bracket. Tariq's improvement in all three phases has been incredible. When the motor is on, he is unbeatable.

Trumble seeding is odd, but only in the context of Bonaccorsi's seed. Looks like some recency bias there.

Houghton, whatever. Anything we get from HWT is a plus. Don't expect much.
