The #4 NC State wrestling team returned to Reynolds Coliseum for the first time since early December, and won nine of the 10 bouts to defeat Virginia, 32-2.

NC State has now son 19 of its 20 ACC individual matches, and improves to 3-0 in conference action.

The dual started at 125 pounds, with the Pack scoring bonus points. #14 Jakob Camacho got all five takedowns of the bout, and added in 2:10 of ride time, for a 12-3 major decision.

In another ranked match-up, this at 141 pounds, #3 Tariq Wilson used a takedown in the first and 1:58 of ride time to claim a 5-1 decision over #30 Verkleeren.

The Cavs scored their first win at 157 pounds, an upset. After a six-point mover by #10 Ed Scott in the second period, #29 Keating used three takedowns in the third for the 11-10 comeback win.

UVA was deducted a team point during the 157 bout and it was 13-2 at the break.

The Pack got its third ranked win at 165 pounds, as #21 Thomas Bullard scored the only takedown of the bout with 54 seconds left, and added ride time, to down the previously unbeaten #17 McCoy 4-1.

#4 Hayden Hidlay ended his match in the first period. Up 14-0, Hidlay scored a pin with just five seconds left for six team points.

Back-to-back Hidlay brother bonus point wins, as #3 Trent Hidlay scored six takedowns and added 2:52 of ride time for a 16-5 major decision over #25 Battista.

The dual last Friday against Virginia was apparently the 6th largest crowd for wrestling at Reynolds. I think it was almost 1,800. But it seemed louder than that, being there in person.

The next home dual is Friday, February 18th at 7pm against unc-CHeat. I think Pop thinks this one may be close to a sellout and set the new attendance record, breaking the ~4,600 from the unc dual in 2020.

If you haven't been to see a dual meet in person, you need to be there for this one against unc. It's going to be electric. Unc is currently ranked 24th in the coaches poll and we should win somewhat easily, but anything can happen.

Yep. VT dual on Sunday the 20th at 6pm in Reynolds, in another top 10 faceoff. Should be a huge crowd for that one too. I'm definitely planning on being there for both of these.

For anyone wondering, you don't have to buy tickets on the Gopack website prior to the event. You can buy a ticket at the entrance as you go in for $8. I think I'm going to show up kinda early for the unc dual, just in case that one is a sell out.

Recent Wolfpack-Panthers Battles
Since the Panthers joined the ACC for the 2014 season, NC State holds a 6-2 record in the conference match-ups, having won the last two and the last three meetings at Pitt.

Last year, the Pack won in Reynolds vs. #12 Pitt, 27-6, and also won at #10 Pitt in 2020, 21-12. The Panthers are the last team to win a dual in Reynolds Coliseum (2019 - 18-16), as NC State has won 11 in a row since that loss.

With the dual close at 10-9, #4 NC State Wrestling won the final four bouts to pull out a 26-9 win at Pitt Friday night. Both Hayden and Trent Hidlay scored tech falls, and Fr. Isaac Trumble scored a top-10 win at 197 pounds.

The dual started at 125 pounds with the first of six ranked vs. ranked matchups. #12 Jakob Camacho recorded four takedowns and a four-point near fall in the third period for a 15-6 major decision over #28 Curry.

Pitt got back-to-back wins to take a 6-4 lead after three bouts. #9 Phillippi used a third-period takedown and the ride time point for a 4-1 decision over #15 Kai Orine. At 141 pounds, #8 Matthews scored the lone takedown with 13 seconds left to down #21 Jack, 3-1.

#3 Tariq Wilson netted both takedowns in the bout at 149 pounds for the 6-3 decision. #9 Ed Scott used a takedown in the first and 1:10 of ride time for a 6-2 win at 157 pounds.

At the halfway point, it was NC State 10-6.

In an OT battle at 165 pounds, #14 Wentzel got an escape in the ride outs for a 4-3 decision over #21 Bullard, 4-3.

The Hidlay brothers then went back-to-back with technical falls to pad the Pack's lead. #4 Hayden Hidlay scored an early takedown and then got four, four-point near falls for an 18-0 first-period tech fall. #3 Trent Hidlay recorded eight takedowns, and a four-point near fall, for a 22-7 tech fall over #29 Harvey.

For the second straight week, #18 Isaac Trumble scored a ranked upset. This week, Trumble took out #6 Bonaccorsi, last year's NCAA finalist. After a scoreless first, Trumble used a second-period ride out and an escape in the third for the 2-0, his second straight year downing Bonaccorsi in the dual.

NC State made it four straight to end the dual, as #24 Tyrie Houghton scored the bout's final three takedowns, two in the third, for a 9-4 decision at heavyweight.

Up Next: The Pack will hold its final two duals of the season next weekend inside Reynolds Coliseum. First will be #21 North Carolina on Friday and then Virginia Tech on Sunday. Both duals will be televised on the ACC Network.

FEATURED BOUTS
149: #3 Tariq Wilson vs. #17 Zach Sherman
The two will be meeting for the eighth time, in the third different weight class. Wilson is 6-1 all-time, and the two have split the last two years in the ACC final at 141 pounds. Wilson, like last year, comes in undefeated at 11-0 overall, 10-0 in duals and 3-0 in ACC action. Sherman has seven losses this season, has faced one of the toughest schedules nationally and he is coming off an All-American season last year.

157: #11 Ed Scott vs. #5 Austin O'Connor
They met last year in the dual at 149 pounds (O'Connor won by major decision), but both have moved up a weight class and both have been the two highest ranked at 157 in the ACC all year. Scott's lone loss this year was an upset by Keating of UVA, but he already has a pair of top-10 wins this season. O'Connor is coming off a national title at 149 last year, and his only loss this season was to #2 Sasso of Ohio State.

174: #4 Hayden Hidlay vs. #9 Clay Lautt
Hidlay goes for history, as he enters his final ACC dual a perfect 22-0 all-time. Lautt has made the ACC finals each of the last two years at 165 pounds, winning the conference title in 2020.

#7 Virginia Tech (8-3, 3-1 ACC)
125: #20 R-So. Sam Latona (9-6)
133: #5 Gr. Korbin Myers (14-1)
141: #22 R-Jr. Collin Gerardi (9-6)
149: #5 Jr. Bryce Andonian (6-1)
157: #28 R-So. Connor Brady (11-5)
165: So. Clayton Ulrey (15-11)
174: #3 R-Jr. Mekhi Lewis (16-0)
184: #14 R-Sr. Hunter Bolen (18-3)
197: #30 R-Jr. Dakota Howard (13-6) -OR- So. Andy Smith (7-4)
285: #14 Gr. Nathan Traxler (16-1)

FEATURED BOUTS
125: #14 Jakob Camacho vs. #20 Sam Latona
A rematch of last year's ACC Final at 125 pounds, Latona has won all three previous matchups - 10-5 in the 2020 Southern Scuffle, 7-4 in the dual last year and then 2-1 (TB1) in the 2021 ACC Final. Camacho is 13-2 on the season, with 10 bonus point wins. Latona finished sixth at the NCAAs last year, and is 9-6 this season. Both are a perfect 3-0 in ACC action.

149: #3 Tariq Wilson vs. #5 Bryce Andonian
A first-ever meeting, as Wilson has moved up to 149 pounds for his final season. Wilson is the consensus #3 wrestler at 149 pounds, off to an 11-0 start. Andonian took time to compete at the 2021 Junior World Championships and is 6-1 on the season, but returned to the Hokie lineup with a pins over #25 Madrigal of George Mason and more recently #14 Finesilver of Duke in just 14 seconds.

174: #4 Hayden Hidlay vs. #3 Mekhi Lewis
The headline match, one school's first-ever four-time All-American (Hidlay) vs. the other school's first-ever NCAA Champion (Lewis). For the first time, they are in the same weight class, Hidlay moving up from 157 pounds and Lewis from 165 pounds. Hidlay is #4 in every poll, while Lewis is right ahead of him at #3 in all five polls. Hidlay is 11-0 and Lewis is a perfect 16-0.

184: #3 Trent Hidlay vs. #14 Hunter Bolen
The second ACC Final rematch from last year, the two will battle for the fifth time over the last three seasons. Bolen leads the head-to-head 3-1 (by a combined score of 8-6), but Hidlay won the last matchup for the ACC title with a takedown in extra time (3-1). The largest margin of victory in their series has been just two points, and the most points scored by an individual has only been three. Hidlay is 13-0 thus far, while Bolen is 18-3 on the season.
