Not our best showing at Southern Scuffle, but we also didn't bring most of the starters. HWT is going to continue to be an issue for us.

The #5 NC State wrestling team took six members, and also a pair of redshirting true freshmen, to the 2022 Southern Scuffle this weekend. The Pack brought home four podium finishes at three different weight classes.

It was a match-up of a pair of NC State heavyweights in the fifth place match, Jr. Tyrie Houghton outlasted teammate R-Fr. Owen Trephan 3-2 in extra time.

Houghton started 2-0, reaching the quarterfinals highlighted by a 6-4 win over #24 Nevills of South Dakota State. After his quarterfinal loss, Houghton won three of his last four bouts in the consolation bracket.

Trephan dropped his first bout, but came back with six straight wins in the consolation bracket, including a 12-4 major over #24 Nevills and 5-3 over Virginia Tech's Catka.

Fr. AJ Kovacs started as the sixth seed at 157 pounds, and placed in the same spot. After starting 1-1 to fall into the consolation rounds, Kovacs won four straight matches highlighted by a 6-3 decision over Penn State's Joe Lee.

Gr. Thomas Bullard took eighth at 165 pounds after medically forfeiting out of his final two matches. Bullard won his first three matches to reach the quarterfinals, highlighted by a 3-2 decision over Penn State freshman Alex Facundo. After a narrow 3-2 loss, Bullard came back to defeat teammate Jake Null 6-2 to earn his podium finish.

Up Next: The Pack will have two road duals this weekend, traveling to Rider on Saturday and Princeton on Sunday.

In a battle of top-20 programs, #5 NC State will travel to #19 Princeton this weekend for the Wolfpack's final non-conference of the season. The dual will be on Sunday at 1 p.m., and streamed on ESPN+.

Scheduling Note: The Pack's Saturday dual vs. Rider has been cancelled. Four members of the Pack are scheduled to compete in the Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday, and join the Pack prior to the Princeton dual.

SERIES VS. PRINCETON
This will be only the fourth meeting between the two teams since the ACC was formed back in the mid-50s. Princeton won the first two (29-11 in 1977 and 24-12 in 1978), while the Pack won the last matchup hosting Princeton in 2020 (29-12).

FEATURED BOUTS
125: #10 Jakob Camacho vs. #1 Patrick Glory
The bout will mark the second in a row Camacho has faced the #1 ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, as last time out he dropped a 6-1 contest to Spencer Lee of Iowa. But Lee is done for the season, and taking over the top spot nationally is Princeton's Patrick Glory. Glory finished sixth as a freshman at the 2019 NCAA Championships, and was the #2 seed at the cancelled NCAAs in 2020.

157: #11 Ed Scott vs. #5 Quincy Monday
Scott is the reigning ACC co-Wrestler of the Week, and is off to a 13-0 start up at his new weight class. He is coming off two straight top-15 wins, including a pin of #8 Young of Iowa. Monday is the younger brother of former UNC wrestler Kennedy Monday, and when Princeton came to Raleigh in 2020 he dropped a competitive decision to Hayden Hidlay in a battle of top-five wrestlers. Monday's lone loss this season was to #2 Deakin of Northwestern.

Top 20 dual against #19 Princeton today. Traditionally, this might be where Pop rests some starters but with the low numbers of matches our guys have gotten (really everyone in the NCAA with various cancellations), I think he probably rolls out most of the A-squad. Princeton's biggest weakness is the bigger weights and we should be pretty heavily favored in the last 4 bouts.
