No. 2 NC State women's tennis picked up its eighth top-25 win of the season in dramatic fashion with a comeback victory over No. 15 Wake Forest on Tuesday evening.
With the win, NC State improved to 15-1 overall and 3-0 in ACC play. The Pack also started conference competition with a 3-0 mark in 2020, and it's best ACC start in program history was a 4-0 record set in 1998.
It was also a milestone night for head coach
Simon Earnshaw as he officially became the winningest coach in program history. He has amassed 139 victories since taking the helm ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.
NC State dropped the doubles point for just the second time this season but went on to win four of six singles courts in what was its ninth-straight win over the Demon Deacons. The Wolfpack has not dropped a decision to Wake Forest since 2015 dual match play.
The Wolfpack showed tremendous resilience up and down the board in singles action. Two of the team's wins were in straight sets, and the remaining four courts went into third sets, with many of those occurring after NC State dropped multiple first sets.
Sophie Abrams got the Pack on the board with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Samantha Martinelli, withstanding a late surge from the Wake Forest graduate to complete the win.
Priska Nugroho came back from a set down for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 84 Casie Wooten on three to put the Pack in front 2-1.
Wake Forest then fired off a pair of wins on six and one to take the 3-2 lead, but it was all NC State for the rest of the night. No. 24
Abigail Rencheli was able to get the job done in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5) over Anna Campana, and the decision once again came down to No. 112
Nell Miller on court four.
Miller, who clinched Sunday's 4-3 decision over No. 14 Miami, broke to go up 5-4 in the third set and went on to serve the match out. Her final score against Anna Brylin was 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4.
NC State will play its next four ACC matches on the road at Clemson (March 18), Georgia Tech (March 20), Boston College (March 25) and Syracuse (March 27).
