The sixth-ranked NC State women's tennis team saw its 2022 dual match campaign come to a close in the NCAA Championships quarterfinals, falling to fourth-ranked Duke (23-3) by a 4-3 score Friday night.
The Wolfpack wrapped up its 2022 dual season with a 26-6 record, with those 26 victories marking the most in a single season in team history. NC State spent the entirety of the season ranked in the national top eight and climbed as high as a program-best No. 2 national ranking. The squad hosted an NCAA Super Regional for the first time in team history after earning a top-eight seed at the NCAA Championships and advanced to the quarterfinals for just the second time in team history and in as many years.
In what was a nearly four hour battle between familiar ACC rivals, the Blue Devils came out on top of the teams' second meeting of the season. It marked the second time in the last three seasons that the two Triangle teams have faced off during the NCAA Championships.
The Wolfpack faced an uphill climb after doubles. Abigail Rencheli and Amelia Rajecki cruised to a 6-2 win to start, but Duke snagged wins on the remaining two courts to claim the opening point.
Priska Nugroho put the Pack on the board in singles with a straight-sets win on three, beating Emma Jackson of Duke 6-3, 6-2.
Duke then got a straight-sets win of its own on two and a three-set comeback victory on three to go a match away from the clinch. The remaining three courts were in third sets, leaving the Wolfpack no room for error on the bottom half of the lineup.
Rajecki took care of business on court five, coming back from a set down to win 12 of the final 16 games of her match. She defeated Elizabeth Coleman 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2 to put the match score at 4-2.
Sophie Abrams followed suit on court six, closing hers out in a tiebreaker for the third set. She beat Eliza Omirou 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3) to extend the match with the team score tied.
At that point, Nell Miller faced a multi-game deficit on court four. She fought off three match points but ultimately fell to 106th-ranked Kelly Chen as the Duke senior won 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2 to clinch.
The Wolfpack turns its attention to the season-ending NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, which will be played May 23-28 in Champaign. NC State will be represented by a pair of singles players - Jaeda Daniel and Rencheli- and two doubles duos - Daniel/Miller and Rencheli/Rajecki. The draw for the individual competition will be released on Sunday, May 22 before play begins Monday.
