HUGE match at home this upcoming Saturday (April 12th) at 5:00pm against #1 in the nation and undefeated Wake Forest. With us ranked #4, this is probably the "biggest" match in program history. Hopefully it sets a home attendance record.

In front of its second-largest home crowd of the season, fourth-ranked NC State was able to improve to 20-4 overall and 12-0 in conference play Sunday afternoon with a comfortable win 4-1 over 64th-ranked SMU.

Before today, 2022 was the most recent season that the Wolfpack was able to post 20 wins in a season. With one more regular season match, the ACC tournament, and the NCAA tournament still to go, the Pack has the opportunity to go far beyond this.

Friday's match broke the program's record for most single-season conference victories (10), today's triumph pushed the new record to 12.

Doubles action provided popcorn entertainment to the 285 fans in attendance. The match started out with all three doubles courts trailing 2-3. Freshman duo, Noah Gabriel and Nikolay Nedelchev were able to tie up their score while court one was trailing and court two was leading.

11th-ranked Jules Leroux and Luca Staeheli took court two 6-4 to put the Pack in the lead, while Gabriel and Nedelchev fell in a tiebreaker on three.

A thriller on court one, provided courtesy of seventh-ranked Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek, delivered the doubles point. After being down 4-5, the set was pushed to a tiebreaker where the senior pair had to break numerous set points in order to take the win, 10-8.

Despite a loss on court one, clinching the match via singles didn't seem to be much of an issue for the Pack. Wins on courts three, four, and five in straight sets secured the 13th straight win for the red-and-white. The last time NC State held a win streak this long was in 1980.

Up Next
The Pack turns its attention to its toughest battle of the season, undefeated Wake Forest. The match will be held in Raleigh on Saturday, April 12 at 5 p.m., winner claims the 2025 ACC Regular Season Championship.

1,000 fans? That's quite ambitious. IIRC, they either set or were close to the men's tennis home attendance record last year versus unc, and it was officially 382 (just looked it up on GoPack). And it was rocking...I was there. The biggest crowd this year for a home men's match is officially 281 against FSU. The women's home attendance record is something in that ballpark too, around 350-400. The stands can only probably hold a max of around 800 to 1,000 if everyone was packed in there like sardines.

But it should be a big crowd, as long as it's good weather for an outdoor match. I would predict we get around 450-500 if the weather is good.

In the highest-anticipated match in years for NC State, head coach Kyle Spencer acknowledged and supported the Pack's often rowdy and loyal fans who flock to the team's biggest matches.

"We want to fill the place," Spencer said. "Everybody come out, it'll be a party. It'll be a really, really fun day for college tennis. It'll be exciting. It'll be loud. So yeah, we encourage everybody, whether you're a fan of college tennis or NC State or even Wake Forest. I think packing the place would be phenomenal and a great show of how popular our sport is."

The Pack's most important match is set for 5 p.m. Saturday in Raleigh against the Demon Deacons.

I'm not a history buff on NC State men's tennis, but this Saturday against Wake Forest has to be the biggest match in program history. Our highest ranked team ever going up against a #1 ranked and undefeated opponent, a top 5 match-up with us ranked #5, at home and playing for the ACC regular season championship.

The Wolfpack can definitely win. When they played Wake earlier this year in mid February at the ITA indoors in Dallas, they barely lost in what was effectively a 3-4 loss (officially a 2-4 loss), as Fons was up 5-2 in the 3rd set in the unfinished singles match. And we lost the doubles point in that match. With the home court and home crowd advantage, I like our chances to flip just one point and beat the Deacs.

Impressive senior class set to lead No. 5 Pack men's tennis against No. 1 Wake Forest

No. 5 NC State men's tennis earned its highest ranking in program history last week. Led by head coach Kyle Spencer and its trio of accomplished, impactful seniors, the Wolfpack is gearing up for its highest potential postseason run in recent memory. With only one match remaining in the regular season, the red-and-white has its first ACC title since 1979 firmly in its sights.

But the regular season finale will come against none other than the undefeated, undisputed No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Raleigh on Saturday night.

A titanic clash of two of the best teams in the country, the ACC rivals will square off in what is easily the Wolfpack's highest-anticipated regular-season match in years. Both teams hold undefeated conference records, and whether it's in the fall, in ITA Indoor competitions or in the postseason, NC State and Wake Forest are no strangers to facing each other in high-stakes matchups.

"We're playing for the ACC championship," Spencer said. "I mean, I don't have to tell anybody that they can see the records. We're both undefeated. We're getting them at home. And the interesting part is that we see them all the time."

[...]

However, Wake Forest will be their toughest test yet perhaps the best team Spencer, Shick, Van Sambeek and Staeheli have ever faced together. But the Wolfpack isn't planning to adjust its identity. The goal remains the same: Embrace the chaos, lean into the pressure and get into a dogfight with the Demon Deacons.

"I think we're really focused on getting into a fight and doing what we do, and being excited about doing that, and excited about having a fantastic environment with a huge crowd on a big day, and I think that's what we live to play for," Spencer said. "I think they live to play for that too. And so I think it's going to be whether it's Saturday or in the ACC Championship or in the NCAA Championship I think it's fantastic for us, for college tennis, for the two programs."

It'll make for one of the most exciting and highly anticipated matches of the college tennis season, let alone NC State's season. First serve against the Demon Deacons is set for 5 p.m. Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh.

I went to the match, and it was an INCREDIBLE crowd. WAAAY more fans than I've seen at dozens of home tennis matches I've been to in the last 4 years. I think ~1,300 is accurate. The seats in the stands were about 90% to capacity, and then you had people standing about two rows deep everywhere behind the top row of bleacher seats. And there were about 100 people on that walkway "bridge" entrance, and another ~150-200 on that grass hill beside the parking lot.

Here's the men's bracket for the ACC tournament that is played this coming weekend. We're the #2 seed and get a bye to the quarterfinals, and play that QF match this coming Friday at 6:00pm (per tweet above from the men's official account).

The tournament is hosted at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, NC. It's a beautiful facility that hosts low-level ATP tournaments. I've gone to the tournament the last two years. They charge $10/day for an all day pass. Parking is free, with around 125 spots located on the Cary Tennis Park property and then another ~250-300 spots located directly across the street at Green Hope Elementary School that they officially allow fans to use.

Reminder that the #2 seeded Wolfpack men begin their ACC tournament play tomorrow (Friday) at 6:00 pm at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, in the quarterfinals. They play the winner of #15 Notre Dame and #7 Duke (being played tonight at 6:00pm).

As I mentioned above, it's $10 (I believe, was price last two years) for an all-day pass at the site (where you can watch any of the many matches going on between all ACC schools), which you can pay as you walk into the facility. And there is free parking at the site, and across the street at Green Hope Elementary School (with signs to the entry of the parking lot confirming that it is "officially" for use for tennis fans).
