NC State Falls In Home Opener Against Duke
RALEIGH After a scoreless opening period, the NC State men's soccer team (0-3-0, 0-3-0 ACC) and Duke (2-2-0, 2-1-0 ACC) combined for four goals in an exciting second half of action, with the Blue Devils coming away with the 3-1 victory on Friday evening.

NC State drew within one after Duke took a two-goal lead in the first 25 minutes of the second half. Ivy Brisma connected on a perfect ball sent from the corner by Pepe Garcia. The junior headed the ball from 12 yards out, and it went looping into the upper right corner of the goal to beat Duke goalkeeper Will Pulisic.

Duke scored its first two goals in a less than 10-minute span to jump out to the 2-0 advantage. Freshman Lewis McGarvey put away a header off of a free kick by Matthias Frick in the 60th minute, and Jack Doran doubled the Blue Devils' lead in the 68th minute as he finished on another free kick, this time a low rolling ball from just outside the box by Nick Pariano.

The Blue Devils then added some cushion in the 87th minute as Daniel Wright ripped a deflected ball through traffic for the squad's third goal of the evening.

NC State goalkeeper Leon Krapf made a pair of critical saves to keep things scoreless in the first half, and he tallied a total of three saves on the night.

The Wolfpack will continue its three-match home stretch on Sunday, Oct. 18 when it welcomes Navy to Raleigh. That non-conference matchup is set to kick off at 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Stadium, with live streaming coverage provided by ACCNX.

In a rematch of the first game of the season, the NC State men's soccer team fell once again to the Duke Blue Devils, this time by a score of 3-1 in the Pack's home opener. The first game of the season between these two teams resulted in a 1-0 double-overtime victory for Duke, but the rematch was not as close. The Wolfpack is now 0-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Duke (2-2, 2-1 ACC) scored two goals within a span of 10 minutes to take a commanding 2-0 lead with less than 25 minutes remaining. Despite a quick answer by the Pack to make the score 2-1 with just over 20 minutes left, Duke scored once again with just over three minutes left, ending any hope of a miraculous Wolfpack comeback.

"As a team, we didn't come out and do what we were supposed to do," said junior forward Ivy Brisma. "I think we are much better than we looked tonight. Collectively, we just need to regroup, come back and be better next time. We have a lot of work to do, and obviously we have a long way to go."

Both teams had their opportunities in the first half, but early on it was NC State who seemed to be the more refreshed side. A pair of corner kicks from redshirt sophomore midfielder AJ Seals produced chances tantalizingly close to finding the back of the Duke net, and though none of the Wolfpack's shots in the first half were on target, aside from a cross from junior Pepe Garcia that technically registered as a shot, it seemed as though NC State was at least poised to control the ball for the remainder of the opening period.

However, Duke seemed to come alive as the first half wore on. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Leon Krapf was called on early to make key saves to prevent NC State from getting into an early hole. Duke was playing just like NC State did early in the period - the only difference was they were getting their shots on target.

That being said, there was nothing in the first half that would suggest that this game would be any different from NC State's first match against Duke, which remained goalless until deep into the extra periods. But as the second half began, Duke provided plenty of reasons - often in the form of goals - why that wouldn't be the case.

Duke struck twice in quick succession, first off the head of Lewis McGarvey and then courtesy of Jack Doran. Brisma brought the Wolfpack within one, but it seemed like all NC State could muster.

"It's not like I did anything different," Brisma said. "We were just really unlucky not to score in the first half. I had the opportunity, I took it and I was able to capitalize."

The Brisma goal came with a little over 20 minutes left in the game, but the Blue Devils snuffed out any chances of the Wolfpack getting back into the game. They held possession away from the NC State offense and made timely tackles when they didn't. Duke finally found an opening late in the game, and restored its two-goal lead against NC State.

After Krapf made another save, which had become customary at that point, Daniel Wright, who had gotten a hold of the ball at the edge of the box, blasted a shot that, once past the NC State defense, Krapf had no chance of stopping.

"Leon [Krapf] made a lot of good saves that kept us in the game," said NC State head coach George Kiefer. "It's really unfortunate that we lost on those three goals."

While the team is now winless in its first three games, there are still plenty of games remaining this season for it to turn its fortunes around.

"Every one of us believes in each other," Brisma said. "We work every single day for each other and I know the effort we give. I believe we just have to regroup, and if we keep giving the effort we give, the results are going to come our way."

Kiefer is also optimistic about his team and believes that the tough start to the year could help the team in the long run.

"Right now we're reeling a little bit, but I do think the punches we're taking right now are gonna help these guys grow up quick, and I have a lot of confidence in the talent that we have," Kiefer said. "I think we can turn this thing around real fast."

The Wolfpack will be back in action, this time against Navy, on Sunday, Oct. 18. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.

The NC State men's soccer team (0-4-0) narrowly fell to visiting Navy on Sunday evening, as the Midshipmen (1-0-0) came away with the 2-1 decision inside Dail Soccer Stadium.

NC State took an early 1-0 lead on a Kuda Muskwe penalty kick. The Midshipmen then answered with a pair of goals in the span of just over two minutes to take the 2-1 lead before halftime. Despite the Wolfpack controlling the final 45 minutes of action, that score stood for the entirety of the second half.

Muskwe scored his first goal of the season and the sixth of his career to put the Pack up in the 29th minute. Teammate Ivy Brisma was tripped up in the box, and Muskwe converted on the ensuing penalty kick with an easy ball to the lower right corner.

Following a loss to the No. 3 team in the country, @PackMensSoccer is now 0-5 this season but the narrow loss to Clemson offers some hope for improvement.

Here are some takeaways from that game and others that can be applied to the rest of the regular season to improve upon the foundation that head coach George Kiefer has laid out.

The NC State men's soccer team (0-5-0, 0-4-0 ACC) will begin its final week of the 2020 fall regular season on Sunday afternoon as it makes the short trip to visit No. 5 North Carolina (2-1-1, 2-1-1 ACC). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium with live streaming coverage provided by ACCNX.

Due to health and safety recommendations and current state guidelines, there is no public admission to the event.

SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS (2-1-1, 2-1-1 ACC)
Both of UNC's wins in 2020 have been shutouts (2-0 over Duke and 1-0 over third-ranked Clemson).
North Carolina's only loss on the year came at the hands of No. 1 Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons took a 1-0 overtime victory on Oct. 18.
Santiago Herrera leads the Tar Heels with a pair of goals. Five different UNC players have found the back of the net this year.
The squad ranks in the top five nationally in save percentage (.765 - 5th) and goals against average (.932 - 5th), with both of those marks also good for top-10 individual marks by goalkeeper Alec Smir.

SERIES HISTORY (NC State trails 22-53-12)
Sunday marks the 88th overall meeting between NC State and North Carolina. The squads also met twice during the 1949 campaign before the Wolfpack was a varsity team.
The match will be the Pack's first regular-season trip to Chapel Hill since 2013. NC State took the 1-0 overtime victory in that game.
The last time NC State earned back-to-back victories against rival UNC was in the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
Each of the last four meetings between the teams have been decided by narrow final scores of 1-0.
NC State and North Carolina have met for preseason exhibitions in both 2019 and 2020. Their last regular-season matchup was on Oct. 12, 2018 when the Wolfpack stunned the top-ranked Tar Heels at home.

UP NEXT
The Wolfpack will return home to wrap up fall regular-season action on Saturday, Nov. 7 as it hosts Wake Forest. That match is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Stadium, and it will be broadcast live on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks.
