The NC State men's soccer team is set for its first competition of the 2020 season as it visits rival North Carolina for an exhibition match on Sunday evening. Kickoff from the UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.

In accordance with current state guidelines, there is no public admission to this event.

2019 REWIND
Last season, the Wolfpack made its third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance for the first time since the 1985-87 seasons. NC State finished fifth in the league standings, the best mark achieved by the program since the 2005 team finished third in the ACC.

2020 SQUAD
NC State returns a significant portion of its starting lineup from 2019 and also welcomes a solid group of newcomers. Included among NC State's 2020 signing class are four freshmen and three transfers.

The Wolfpack returns four multi-goal scorers from last year, including junior Kuda Muskwe who tied for the team lead with five goals in 2019. The team also brings back six players who earned 17+ starts apiece during the 2019 campaign.

PRESEASON NEWS
Senior midfielder George Asomani was named to the 11-player 2020 ACC Preseason Watch List on Tuesday. He enters the year after playing in 18 games and earning the start in each of those outings. He tallied a total of 1,598 minutes on the field in 2019, highlighted by nine shots and a goal in NC State's ACC Tournament quarterfinal match at Pittsburgh.

In addition, the Pack was selected to finish fourth in the competitive South Region, as voted on by the league's head coaches in the 2020 ACC Preseason Poll.

SERIES HISTORY
NC State and North Carolina last faced off in the exhibition portion of the 2019 season. The Wolfpack came away from that meeting with a 2-1 victory. David Norris scored first for NC State following a corner kick in the 52nd minute, and David Loera converted a penalty just minutes later to double the Pack's lead.

The teams will also play once during the 2020 regular season, with NC State slated to make a return trip to Chapel Hill on Oct. 30.

COMING UP
The Wolfpack will open up 2020 regular season action at Duke on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The NC State men's soccer began its season on Saturday evening with a 1-0 loss against ACC rival Duke, a team NC State was scheduled to play earlier this month in an exhibition game that was later canceled.

The opportunity to scout its opponent was sorely missed by the Wolfpack, as its offense peppered the Duke goal with shots but never had a meaningful scoring chance against the Blue Devils.

While the Pack defense limited Duke to six shots, Duke had the only two shots in extra time, including the game-winning goal 110 minutes after kickoff.

Despite the sizable volume of shots, both offenses were stuck in a malaise all game. The Wolfpack managed to get nine shots off in the opening 90 minutes but only one forced a single save from Duke goalkeeper Will Pulisic, while the rest either went wide of the net or were blocked by the hardworking Duke backline.

Freshman forward Pau Palacin was the closest to breaking the deadlock as his first shot forced a rebound from Pulisic that Palacin immediately corralled for a second shot, which missed the net. The Wolfpack took two more desperation shots at the Duke net in the final two minutes of regulation, to no avail.

The game was tied 0-0 after 90 minutes but NC State had outshot Duke nine to four, with none of Duke's shots forcing a save from redshirt junior goalkeeper Leon Krapf, and had the majority of possession up to that point. All signs pointed to the Pack being able to continue that good play, and while it seemed NC State might be able to carry over that energy into extra time, it was Duke that seemed to get a second wind that led to more inspired play.

Not only did NC State not register a shot in extra time but with just 34 seconds left, Duke freshman Nick Pariano scored from the left side of the box, beating Krapf with a low shot to his right.

The Wolfpack have a week to make some adjustments before its next game against Wake Forest. That game will be on Saturday, Oct. 3 and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Despite taking a 1-1 tie into the halftime break, the NC State men's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-2-0 ACC) fell to top-ranked Wake Forest (2-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) by a final score of 4-1 inside Spry Stadium.

After Kyle Holcomb put Wake Forest up 1-0 in the 36th minute, NC State evened the tally late in the first half with junior Alex Bautista's second career goal. The score was generated off of a penalty kick after Alex Hernandez was tripped up trying to chase down a ball inside the box. AJ Seals took the PK for the Pack, which was initially saved by Demon Deacon goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg, but Bautista put the rebound away inside the near post and pulled the Wolfpack level.

The Demon Deacons reclaimed their lead in the 46th minute with Holcomb's second goal of the outing. Jake Swallen managed to poke a ball through the Wolfpack's defensive line, and Holcomb flicked it into the far side of the netting. Machop Chol (70') and David Wrona (71') added insurance goals within 40 seconds of each other to put the game out of reach for the Pack.

In the first half, NC State held strong on the defensive side of the ball as the teams felt each other out during the opening minutes. Pablo Pedregosa (10') and Bautista (17') deflected the first two Demon Deacon strikes of the game, and the teams saw two shots on goal apiece in the opening 45 minutes of the night.

The Wolfpack managed to generate a few quality scoring opportunities late in the match, but Wake Forest outshot the Pack 12-7 (6-3 on goal) in total on its way to taking home the victory.

The Pack will play its first home game of the 2020 season on Friday, Oct. 9 as it faces off against Duke for the second time in two weeks. That match is slated for an 8 p.m. kickoff and will be televised nationally by the ACC Network.
