RPI dropped from 57 to 80. Pretty much burying our at-large chances, barring a miraculous late season run. Looks like all 12 teams make the ACC tournament, so now we jockey for seeding. Tied for 9th right now. I'd imagine that we'd want to avoid the 8/9 matchup, but with at UNC and FSU as part of our remaining 3 series, it's going to be hard to climb beyond 8th. Plus, with VT/UVA/Duke all playing each other, 10th or 11th seems very likely.

80th is an improvement from last year, but a long way from the days of NCAA tournament runs, and a super regional.

The NC State softball team is set to take on in-state rival UNC-Chapel Hill this weekend in a three-game ACC series. The teams will meet at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., at 6 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Monday.

The first two games will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra and the finale on Monday will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

The Wolfpack enters the weekend with a 21-19 (4-10 ACC) record while the Tar Heels are 23-20 (11-4 ACC) this season.

Scouting UNC-Chapel Hill
The Tar Heels have won four of five ACC series this season, including sweeps over Duke and Virginia Tech. In its last time out UNC-CH split its midweek games when it defeated Longwood 3-0 at home on Tuesday and fell to James Madison 9-0 (5) on the road on Wednesday.

Kiani Ramsey leads the squad at the plate with a .402 clip, while the team is batting .283 and averaging 7.44 hits per game.

Brittany Pickett paces the pitching staff with a 2.27 earned-run average, as she has thrown 225.0 of the team's 292.2 innings. She holds a 21-7 record in the circle with 151 (81 percent) of the team's strikeouts.

according to something I read from a fan, there are only 10 teams making the ACC tournament. If that is the case, then this weekend is a must win series. If we can get 2 of 3 from Syracuse, then we have a decent shot. Less than that, and we are probably on the outside looking in.

It's not just pitching, we can't hit and score consistently either. It's not all on the pitchers

Didn't we lose a key assistant to ECU? It seems like that loss, coupled with the graduation of our pitching, has cost us dearly. The past couple of years have been terrible with the softball program. I trust Debbie is watching.

They finally posted a bracket for the ACC tournament, and it turns out that it is only going to be a 10 team single elimination tournament. Not sure why they wouldn't just do a 12 team tournament since it's going to be 4 days anyway.

And because of that, we have to look at our ACC chances, and the answer is that they are bleak. Currently 8 teams have clinched, UVA is mathematically out, so there are 3 teams for 2 spots.

Louisville (7-10) left: BC and at Pitt
VT (6-14) left: at GT (this weekend)
NCSU (5-15) left: FSU (next weekend)

We do not control our own destiny. Also, all teams had 1 game rained out, so tiebreakers will come into play. However, VT didn't play NCSU, so if there is a 2 way tie with VT, it goes to best win (NCSU would get it because we'd have at least one FSU win). If we tie Louisville, they get it because they beat NCSU 2-1. However, if it's a 3 way tie, since we didn't all play, then they revert to the second tiebreaker. So our FSU wins, would give us the tiebreaker.

So in theory we could get the 9 seed, if it's a 3 way tie at 8-15 or 7-16. Most likely Lou will get one, and it will come down to us and VT. VT plays this weekend, so we will see what we need. If VT gets swept, then we only need one. FSU is really good, but getting one win, is doable. Having to win 2 or 3, is probably too tall of a task.

This weekend, if VT wins 3, and Lou wins 1, then we'd be officially eliminated. If VT loses at least one, then we are at least still alive.

Yes, after our Super Regional, we lost our pitching coach to ECU as a head coach. Then our 2016 ace transferred after the season (plus a hot shot freshman recruit), and then our freshman 2017 ace transferred after the season.

I hate to say hot seat because he took us to the only super regional in school history. Something UNC has never done. But 3 straight subpar seasons makes me wonder if there is any way that we can get that momentum back. Missing the ACC tournament 2 of 3 years is bad. And it doesn't help that Duke just created a program and already passed us.

I hope that he can get the momentum back, but I'm sure that Debbie is watching closely

If you are referring to Mirabella and Silverman as aces, I think you are exaggerating a little there. They aren't doing much better at the schools they transferred to. (NC Central and Central Connecticut State).

The talent level on our team needs to improve across the board.
