Liberty leads 5-2 after five complete

It's disappointing that Liberty has a better softball program than we do.

A five-run burst in the fourth inning allowed Liberty to defeat the NC State softball team 5-2 on Wednesday evening at Kamphius Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.

The Wolfpack moves to 20-16 on the season while the Flames improve to 29-8.

An update going into the BC series. We are #57 in the RPI. Nibbling at the bubble, but definitely on the outside looking in. We have 5 top 50 wins, which is great, but we have countered that with 5 losses outside the top 100. We are 2/3rds of the way through the season, and we really need to make a run if we are going to make the NCAA.

We are two games in the hole due to rainouts, but I doubt at this point in the season, we will pick up extra games, unless one of our non-conference games gets changed to a doubleheader.

We really need to push our RPI into the top 50 to have a legit shot. Our next 12 games are against non-top 50 competition, so this is the time to make a move. It needs to start with at least 2 of 3 against BC this weekend.

My original guess for making the NCAA was 33-23 overall, 12-12 in the league. With our RPI where it is now, I feel decent about 32-22, 11-12 in the league. Then in the ACC tournament (a true 12 team single elimination), we would need at least a first round win, putting us at 33-23 going into selection day. Depending on how the RPI shakes out, that could be enough. I'd hate to be anything less.

That means that we need 7-5 in the league, and 5-1 in the non-conference. Breaking it down, it means, winning 2 of 3 from BC, UNC, and Syracuse, Getting at least 1 of 3 against FSU. Winning 2 of 3 against top-50 UNCG, and sweeping the other three non-conference games. Those are all doable, not miraculous, but the margin for error is slim.

The NC State softball team dropped its doubleheader on Friday evening with Boston College at Dail Stadium. The Wolfpack fell 6-2 in game one and 12-2 (5) in the nightcap.

The Pack moves to 20-18 (4-9 ACC) and the Eagles improve to 18-15 (7-3 ACC).
How It Happened
Game One
-NC State scored two runs in the second inning. Timberlyn Shurbutt led off the inning with a single through the left gap, and Cheyenne Balzer brought her home with a one-out double to right center. Then after Sam Russ legged out an infield single to put runners at the corners, Lily Bishop allowed Balzer to cross home plate with a single up the middle.
-BC plated a run in the third on an RBI groundout to first base after a pair of outfield singles puts runners at the corners.
-In the fourth inning a Wolfpack error allowed two runs to score with the bases loaded, giving the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
-The Eagles scored three more runs on one hit and two errors, extending their lead to four. With runners on second and third, a single and error plated two runs and a wild pitch scored the third run.

Game Two
-BC quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first on three hits and an error. After a pair of outfield singles and error put runners at second and third, an RBI single and sacrifice fly to left field plated the runs.
-NC State answered with a run in the bottom frame on Alyssa Compton's RBI sacrifice bunt after Jade Caraway drew a leadoff walk and Garner's double to left center started the threat.
-In the second inning BC extended its lead to two when a wild pitch scored a run, but the Pack once again cut its deficit to one in the bottom half when Angie Rizzi scored on an error after her leadoff single and Balzer's double put runners at second and third.
-Another Wolfpack error extended BC's lead to 4-2. After a leadoff walk started the side an error brought the run in.
-In the fourth BC scored seven runs on five hits and two errors to seal the run-rule win, and added two more runs in the fifth on a passed ball and sacrifice fly to center field.

Up Next
The teams will meet for the finale Sunday at Dail Stadium. There will not be a game played Saturday. First pitch is 12 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
