Maps shared online are sparking fears of nuclear repercussions after a
5.1-magnitude earthquake rocked an area of Iran believed to be used to develop atomic weaponry.
The
earthquake struck
Iran alarmingly close to the country's Fordow nuclear enrichment facility in Qom Province. According to the
U.S. Geological Survey, the Earthquake in northern Iran is the largest since one last December. Iran sits on top of many fault lines and has experienced a number of similarly large quakes in the area.
Despite that, it hasn't stopped some from
speculating on whether it was a nuclear test, a strike, or another measure that may spill radiation into the atmosphere. One X user wrote: "An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale and measuring 35 meters deep struck
#Iran. Western analysts have stated that it may be a nuclear weapons test conducted by Iran on its own territory."
