I don't find much common ground with you....but this is an area where I do. I read 1984 a few weeks ago and Orwell coined the term "doublethink" in that book as part of the Party's "newspeak" language. For those that haven't read it since HS, doublethink is where you're asked to believe two mutually contradictory beliefs.

This is doublethink and the NCAA (and others) have put it into practice.

(this might be where we diverge in opinion)

I think there is sufficient evidence to show that the vaccine works and does its job. So, if we trust that evidence and the science (which I do), then why am I supposed to continue doing things like wearing masks? You can't tell me that the vaccine works (with a 90%+ effective rate) and then ask me to believe that I need to take additional counter-measures for the sake of doing so?

I totally agree with the last part of what you say, i don't wear my mask except in the hospital and in the office. But that meme is not an example of doublethink imho. They are not mutually contradictory when it comes to community health. Only in specific individual interactions do the words really resonate. Sure, on the surface it seems so clever.

Yep, that's been one huge problem throughout this pandemic, maybe the biggest problem in terms of trust of institutions and politicization of the pandemic and science, medicine, etc.

There is a huge and understandable disconnect between personal risk evaluations and public health policymaking.

Many folks have consistently judged public health policies and policymakers through the lens of personal risk tolerance. Public health and personal risk frequently have divergent inputs and outputs.

What's good for the goose, or more accurately what the goose feels fine risking, often is less justifiable or prudent for the gander.

Just saw on Twitter that the Whitehouse (ie., Biden) is planning to ask states to reinstate mask policies, due to concerns about the Delta variant.

My response to the Tweet - I am fully vaccinated and have no plans to wear a mask. The Whitehouse can Piss Off.

The vaccines should protect me from serious illness associated with the Delta variant and I will not be a risk to others.

Twitter for crowdsourced news has benefits and drawbacks.

What do you think the actual probability is new mask mandates come to pass?
If you were in charge, what would you do?
Considering that a flimsy piece of cloth doesn't do jack protecting or stopping the spread of a serious virus, new mask mandates would be a horrible decision.

And just like I have predicted....Here is the "newest" "deadliest" "mostest dangerous..." version yet....

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/25/health/delta-plus-variant-explainer-intl-hnk-scn/index.html

This is and has been the plan after the left destroyed the voting laws across the country and in very strategically selected cities and counties.

It won't end until they have turned his country into a 3rd world country beholden to a select few.

Good luck with that lefties. Your sudden absence from this thread is very telling and very expected. You don't like the facts that are being presented and you can't dispute them with your normal lies and BS propaganda. Especially when you have medical experts calling out the lies and BS for exactly what they are.

Political propaganda.... Which exactly what this was from the onset and it should have been discussed as such.

I pretty much did all the same things last year that I am doing this year... and so did most of everyone else in my area (we just had to wear masks inside businesses), but I live on the coast so maybe it's different in Raleigh, Charlotte, etc.

And I don't have young school aged kids anymore either, so I didn't have to deal with any of those restrictions that others had to.

Interesting, so the people down at the coast still get right up in each other's face when waiting in line? Went to church during all this and hugged and shook hands with everyone? Still go to target, grocery, gas station, etc, touch a bunch of stuff and then just go on w/o washing hands?(

Now, I've always been a social distancer in crowds, so I was already doing that to a large degree, but I've observed all those changes in general over the past 18 months
People, on the coast, near where I am 1/2 the time, never followed suit like the people in the triangle (Cary 1/2 my other time). Guess, what, they voted around 70% Republican and they weren't any worse on the infection rate than Wake County.
Interesting.....looking at the current data from Mayo Clinic tracking (I have no interest to spend cycles researching from months ago), of the 15 or so counties with the highest average daily cases per 100k people.....7 are from far eastern NC (Bladen, Columbus, Jones, Bertie, Camden among them) and the other 7 or so are from teh far western part -- Ashe, Watauga, Graham, and several others.

The entire Piedmont, by far the most populous part of the state -- from Triangle, Triad and Charlotte metro -- is not represented in that higher count. Which is surprising given the density of people.

Granted, the #s are very low overall, which is a great thing...perhaps we are really getting past this thing, as Wayland's numbers and the hospital numbers continue to show.

As I've said here often...I think these precautions were the right thing to do when out in public to protect yourself and others....but at same time, I've always thought the biggest problems with spread were directly related to the more casual settings within a home, where no one ever suggested to take particular caution.....ie, the chicken processing plant worker comes home at night, and has dinner and hangs out with 5-6 family members in his house then ends up sick. Then additional family members end up sick, etc.....

So HHS updated their national data set yesterday. Interesting the see the hospital admissions WITH COVID the last 7 days.

Guilford 41
Robeson 26
Mecklenburg 18
Pitt 17
Durham 13
Vance 12
Forysth 10
Cumberland 9
Orange 8
Nash 8
Wake 7

Seven.... seven WITH COVID hospitalizations total in a week in the state's most populous county.
Wayland

And talking about case numbers earlier. We should be somewhere past the inflection point for the seasonal summer surge. NC has stayed pretty flat.

Cases by specimen date, are creeping down but super slow. Cases by report date, tend to jump around do to backlogs and old additions deletions.

We are also getting to the point where numbers are so low, a single outbreak can actually have an impact. Or a small county can have an outbreak and pick up 10 or so cases a day for a few days, and that translates into a massive 'per capita' surge in that county. Hopefully we make it through the next month relatively unscathed.

Deaths WITH COVID are basically at a pandemic low. Lot's of months old (and 2020) deaths getting mixed into reports.

The CDC reported percent of patients in the ED with diagnosed C19 in NC has hovered around 0.4%-0.5% for the last two weeks, so there hasn't been a real inflection point up. Is this stall part of the 'surge' or do we have some sort of testing floor?

Go down to the Understand the Status of your Community and click the Data Table tab.

They used to update it every weekday. The last few weeks it has been once or twice a week.

The easiest way to manage the data table for NC is just do a search for ", NC" and that will isolate the NC counties.

Every now and then they actually update the data download (if you dig through the view accessible version pages) since that you can load it in wherever and dig deeper into the data at your leisure

There are a lot of positive signs.

I mean, I genuinely think seasonality is a thing that we should be super aware of. Honestly, for me, that is a bigger concern than whatever scarient is flavor of the day.

I wondered if we did see a summer inflection up, if that seasonality would be abused by policymakers. Public health seems to have ignored any sort of seasonality (just like they ignore infection acquired immunity) and have seem to gone all in on Delta.

It is certainly possible, we could see a bit of a surge still in the next month, but this really needs to be kept in perspective. Media/PH are generally bad with numbers and unable to portray them with any proper nuance.

I just don't know when we are going to get to the point where we can reframe C19 and understand at this point it is an endemic virus. Yes, the virus is out there, it likely always will be, but the emergency portion is over. Vaccinated/prior infected are largely protected, the virus poses virtually no issue to children.

Unfortunately, fear is still a great tool for authoritarian policy decisions.

Come on man, be smarter than that -- or at minimum, more intellectually honest than that. Who is one person who has actually cheered the NCAA decision? Its this kind of lazy statement that infects Washington DC.

You can say the NCAA could have changed its policy and was most clearly hypocritical (having unchecked fans in the stadium) AND also that the teams had been given the policies in advance of participation, and needed to live by them.

Saying they gave us a policy is called stating a fact. You don't have to like it or abide by it, but ultimately you may be judged on it. So yes, saying that is "cheering" for the policy is absurdly childish.
Frankly, I think testing for a baseball tournament (outdoors, no long-term contact) was silly....but they did it throughout the tournament if you decided to not be vaccinated...and that ultimately created the series of unfortunate events that led to our removal

(and it's also why Corrigan, as angering as it is that he basically said nothing, did in fact, say nothing. What could he say -- other than gripe about the horrible communications, the inconsistencies of the safety protocols, etc).

"Only five severe cases have been reported in Israel in the last 10 days."

This means the vaccines are working. Reports I read a couple of days ago indicated the unvaccinated are transmitting it to vaccinated people, but those who are vaccinated are relatively free of severe symptoms. Vaccines reduce your likelihood of developing a severe infection and reduce hospitalizations. They also reduce the ability to transmit the virus to others. They do not prevent you from testing positive (as we just saw with the four State baseball players).

Sounds good - I wonder how they're finding infected people amongst the vaccinated. I know at this point if I develop symptoms that are covid like I just assume it's allergies / cold and haven't been interested in getting tested.
