NC State baseball headed to Louisana for NCAA Regional

The Wolfpack will be the 2-seed in Ruston and face 3-seed Alabama Friday.

NC State baseball’s season will continue this weeked in the NCAA regional round. After falling just short in a 1-0 loss to Duke in the ACC Championship Game, the Wolfpack will look to advance to a Super Regional for the first time since 2013 by winning the Ruston, Louisana Regional, hosted by Louisiana Tech.

After starting the regular season 1-8 and then finishing 24-6 and making it the conference title game, the Pack will be the 2-seed in this regional behind 1-seed Louisiana Tech. The Wolfpack will start things off against 3-seed Alabama Friday at 3 p.m. on ESPN3. 4-seed Rider rounds out the group. 

Alabama went 31-24 overall this year and finished 11th in a loaded SEC. Louisana Tech went 40-18 and fell to Old Dominion in the Conference USA Championship game. Rider finished 23-16 but won the MAAC Tournament. 

The winner of this regional would face the winner of the Fayetteville, Araknas Regional, hosted by No. 1 overall seed Arkansas, in the Super Regional round.

They did seed the 2 seeds internally, regardless of what they say. Otherwise we wouldn't be matched up with the 16 seed in freaking LA

We got a good draw here. Super Regionals who knows haha. Not uncommon for Super hosts to never make it. Gotta play the games first.

It is very tough to have to beat the odds-on national champion favorite just to get to Omaha. To avoid any jinx, I am not assuming that we are necessarily going to get out of the Region, but I am assuming that Arkansas will absolutely make it out of its Region.

Team had a super crappy day on Sunday aganst lights out pitching. If the bats come alive again, we have the pitching and the fielding to beat anybody. I am excited to see what we can do.

D1 baseball got 63 of 64 teams right. They had PItt in and Bama out. That was their only miss. Hopefully we take care of Bama game 1

I think it will be good to fly out to a different part of the country to play. It's a fresh start where they can just focus on the games. They know none of teams and no one knows them. Just play.

Alabama Despite ending the season with back-to-back top-25 losses in the SEC tournament, the Crimson Tide is still dancing. The Tide were off to a scorching hot 16-1 start to the 2020 season, well on their way to their first NCAA regional since 2014. The wait is now officially over. If the Tide are in close ballgames, they have an edge with Chase Lee in the bull

Louisiana Tech* The Bulldogs are a host team for the first time in program history, earning the No. 16 national seed. It's the ninth appearance for Louisiana Tech and the first since 2016. The Bulldogs have a balanced offense with six regular players hitting better than .315. Hunter Wells leads the way, hitting .366 with 16 doubles and 11 home runs.

NC State The Wolfpack have a nice little regional streak going, having now made the bracket in each year since the 2010 season. This year's team has a rather interesting lineup with four hitters Jonny Butler, Tyler McDonough, Terrell Tatum and Luca Tresh combining for 49 home runs. Butler has been the guy to watch this season, hitting .388 with 11 doubles, 12 home runs and 14 RBIs.
(did NC State make NCAAT in 2014? I thought not)

Rider The Broncs are back in the tournament for the first time since 2010, making their 14th appearance all-time. They slugged their way to the Metro Atlantic championship, blasting five home runs in the 7-2 victory over Fairfield to earn the automatic bid.

Pitt exclusion really doesn't make much sense. It's only a matter of time until someone starts pulling lawsuits on this stuff.

I feel good about our starting pitching for this weekend. They were great in the meaningful games this past weekend. RJ on Friday, Highfill on Saturday, then Villaman/Willadsen to get us the rest of the way. Just have to win the first game, or the hill to climb becomes a mountain.

No. 2 North Carolina State (30-17)

All-Conference Honorees: OF Jonny Butler (first), SP Reid Johnston (third), RP Evan Justice (third), OF Tyler McDonough (second), 1B Austin Murr (second), DH Terrell Tatum (first), SS Jose Torres (first)

Season in a sentence: After a 4-9 start to the season that included a pause due to Covid-19 issues, NC State turned its season around and now enters the NCAA Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country.

Best pitcher: Evan Justice, LHPNC State has a team ERA of 4.99, so this is not a pitching-led outfit. But the Wolfpack have a trusted bullpen ace in Justice. His overall numbers (4-2, 4.24) don't necessarily stand out because he began the year in the rotation and had a few rough starts. But since moving to the bullpen in late March, he's become the Wolfpack's stopper. As a reliever, he is 3-0, 1.76 with nine saves in 15 appearances.

Best hitter: Jonny Butler, OFButler, like NC State, is entering regionals on a hot streak. His 11-game streak of multi-hit games came to an end in the ACC Tournament, but he's still hitting .388/.460/.688 with 12 home runs and 14 stolen bases on the year. His breakout has been a big boost for the Wolfpack.

Outlook: It took some time to get here, but NC State is playing like the team it was expected to be coming into the year. The Ruston Regional presents a good matchup for the Wolfpack. It has the most postseason experience in the field and its offensive-oriented approach will play well in the Love Shack. That said, NC State will need its pitching staff to perform to win its first regional since 2013.
