Wolfpack wrestler, Vince Robinson, has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, November 12.
The redshirt freshman went 3-0 throughout Sunday's Collegiate Classic round robin where he picked up ranked victories over No. 13 Diego Sotelo (Harvard), No. 16 Max Gallagher (Penn), and No. 19 Sheldon Seymour (Lehigh).

I'm seeing that tonight's wrestling match is a Student Wolfpack Club "minute event", which I'm pretty sure is one of those events where the Student WPC members get points for showing up. So I would expect that means that several hundred more students will be in attendance than normal. I'm going to risk getting a ticket at the door, even though I guess it's possible this might sell out.

State with a slow start.
Hohman at 133 loses 7-5 in a match that had a bunch of technical violations. I do think he got screwed on the challenge of his second period takedown- looked pretty clear he got it but the refs ruled no takedown. The annoying thing is that if it wasn't challenged, he would've had the takedown for sure a few seconds later when he adjusted his arms.
Orine struggling at 141. He was getting beat pretty soundly by Carter until Carter hurt his knee and had to forfeit. I worry that Orine doesn't have the strength to bump to 141 - he tried to lat drop Carter and ended up on his own back because he couldn't complete the throw.
State lucky to be up 6-3 through 2 bouts. Should be down 6-0.

At 149, a good match for redshirt freshman Koy Buesgens. He's not locked in as the starter at 149 for State but gets a third period takedown to win 7-5. With multiple veteran guys redshirting this year for State, he has a chance to see the mat a little earlier than expected. He's made the most of his opportunities since he got to Raleigh.

At 165, Will Miller is App's best wrestler. Ranked 8th in the country and a two time NCAA Qualifier. I thought Derek Fields (ranked 20th) was competitive, but he's going to need to set up his double better to finish takedowns. Miller wins 7-3 and was in control the second half of the bout once he had a lead. Likely the only ranked on ranked matchup of the night and App takes it.
174: Matty Singleton has flashed in the past at 165. Impressed with his defense and strength in a win over Uliano who is a possible NCAA qualifier this spring for App. Singleton threw him to his back in the first for a quick 7-0 and then holds on for a 9-2 win.
17-6 Pack after 6 bouts.
Side note: Trent Hidlay is a natural at the analyst on the broadcast. Really insightful, and well spoken.

184. Dylan Fishback looked real good in a win over Brooker, who made the NCAAs as a freshman. Fishback got the pin but Brooker appeared to be injured and couldn't put much weight on his knee for the end of the match and looked to just go to his back. Not to take anything away from Fishback, who looks like a guy ready for that next step.
197. Christian Knop is a redshirt senior, finally getting a chance at State as a starter. Ranked 30th, I'm not sure his ceiling is super high but good to see him get a chance. He looks huge, even for 197.
Knop hurt his ankle early in the second period on bottom and needed injury time. The injury really flipped the match and Knop wasn't able to compete after. He injury defaulted in the third down 6-2.
I've never seen three injury defaults in one dual. Makes the final score a little deceiving.
State up 23-12 through 8 bouts.

HWT: I'm not sold on Trumble at heavyweight - it hurts the team as State has other quality options at HWT and leaves State weak at 197. I don't know what Trumble's ceiling is at HWT with his style, but he dominated Andrews and gets the first period pin.
125. Redshirt freshman Vince Robinson has drawn a ton of attention with his early season performances. Really reminds me of one of my favorite Pack wrestlers, Tariq Wilson, and how he looked early in his career at 133. So fast and athletic. Loves the snap, duck under, and swing single takedowns. He gets the tech fall over Luna 20-5.
I'm not sure of the plans for Jacob Camacho this season, he's already redshirted so I don't think that is an option. Staff might have a decision to make, even with Camacho's history of success. I'm not sure how you keep Robinson off the mat if he keeps looking like this.
State wins the dual 34-12.

I was having this discussion in my head during the match. State is weak at 133. My guess is Robinson is better suited for 133 than Camacho. Not sure either are really suited for big success there, but might be better than the other options.Redwolf55 said:

Edited to add: Looks like Robinson wrestled 133 against Duke last year and won by major decision. Against Duke so not good competition but that gives some precedent that the coaches believe he can compete at 133.

Led by Isaac Trumble's pin fall win in his return to Reynolds Coliseum and technical falls by both Ed Scott and Vince Robinson, sixth-ranked NC State wrestling handled business with App State Friday night to take a 34-12 victory for its first home dual-match of the 2024-25 slate.
After bumping up to 133 pounds in the offseason, redshirt-sophomore Troy Hohman, entered the lineup for the Wolfpack to open the dual-match. His first points of the night over App State's Chad Bellis came from a 2-point reversal to start the second period. He then gave up a technical point and an escape to make it two a piece. With 30 seconds remaining in the second period he secured a 3-point takedown that was challenged by App State's head coach and overturned, keeping it 2-2. With less than a minute remaining in the bout, Bellis is able to get a takedown on the edge to carry his decision win comfortably and give the Mountaineers the first team points of the night.
Wrestling at 141 in the starting lineup for the first time in Reynolds Coliseum, seventh-ranked Kai Orine faced App State's Sean Carter who had to injury default early in the third period, giving NC State the 6-3 lead in team points.
Koy Buesgens claimed a 7-5 victory when he took the stage in the starting lineup at 149 pounds for the first time to face Kaden Keiser. The first period closed out scoreless, but Buesgens started the second in down position and gave away two back points but followed up with an escape making it 1-2. The redshirt-freshman for the Pack is able to get a takedown with 30 seconds left in the second period, giving him the 4-2 lead. Tied up at four a piece with just a minute remaining in the bout, a scramble leads to Buesgens next takedown, cruising him to a victory and a 9-3 team score.
Ninth-ranked Ed Scott followed up made an aggressive return to Reynolds Coliseum in the 157 weight class over the Mountaineer's Anthony Conetta. He looked for a pin fall in the first period but with short time he was only able to get a 4-point near fall and push to a quick 10-1 lead. Scott carried his dominance to the third period, getting himself a technical fall to end the bout early and push his team's lead to 11.
The key match-up of the night was the 165 pound bout between No. 20 Derek Fields and visiting opponent No. 8 Will Miller who has started his season 3-0. Fields was able to hold off Miller in the first period and start the second with an escape. He gets taken down to trail 2-3 moving into the final two minutes and was never able to take a lead, giving App State three team points.
25th-ranked Matty Singleton returned to the mat in Raleigh after taking the last year to redshirt while he competed internationally and put on weight to go up to 174. He came out explosive looking for an early pin fall but was only able to secure a 4-point near fall and push a 7-0 lead to close out the first three minutes. The Georgia native was able to take his early lead and only allow Luke Uliano two points, handing a 9-2 loss out to the visiting Mountaineer.
In the 184 pound weight class 14th-ranked Dylan Fishback took on Tomas Brooker who had to injury default in the first period.

Yes he beat the Campbell kid who was top 10. Trumble will be successful at HWT but his international success came at 97 KG (213 pounds). How does he look against qualified big HWTs?tau06 said:SportManagementEngineer said:

Disagree with you on Trumble. Looks like a natural at HWT. Think he's going to be a hammer for us there this year. Didn't he win against a top 10 opponent in match prior to App? Know he had a great season while redshirting. He looked great last night IMO
It hurts to have Owen Trephan just sitting on the bench as a two time ACC champ/NCAA qualifier. Now you have Knop at 197 who is limited and we don't know the extent of his injury. Obviously Trumble is not going back to 197 so its a bit of a worthless discussion.
Maybe a little pessimistic but this team doesn't look like one that will win the ACC this year. Too many questions in the lineup, not enough hammers to get you bonus points when you need them. Only three top 10 guys in the lineup - and even they've been shakey. We went from a very old and experienced team to a pretty inexperienced group due to graduations last season and redshirts this season.
I'd give Virginia Tech the edge at this point.

In the last podcast, Coach Popolizio said that one of Robinson or Camacho would likely move up to 133 later in the year. And since Robinson is doing so well at 125, it looks like it will probably be Camacho making that move, but I think Pop indicated that this may not happen until January or February.
I'm no expert on wrestling, but I've seen others saying that moving up a weight class can be a challenge especially at the lower weight classes - where even for a guy as good at 125 as Camacho, it could be challenging for him to be just as good at 133. Looks like Kai Orine may be experiencing this right now with his move up to 141, and possibly needing to add more muscle/strength.
If Camacho and Kai Orine could adjust well to these moves up to 133 and 141 by February or March, I think we could have a solid enough line up (still weak at 149, 165, and 197 though) that could be right there with VT and win the ACC. If not, looks like VT will be favored.

Completely agree. As a former lightweight wrestler, that 8 pounds from 125 to 133 is way different than the jump from 184 to 197, etc. I was a 125 in college and 133 felt like a different sport.
I still expect Robinson to be the one to go to 133 and Camacho to stay at 125 in his last season but have no inside info. I guess in theory, if you wanted to make sure Robinson was happy and stayed around for next year, you could keep him at 125, but I don't see Camacho having any success at 133 with his build.

Owen Trephan has left the team and will be enrolling at Lehigh and eligible next semester. Can't blame him as this is his last year of eligibility and Trumble has the HWT spot.

2nd home dual this Saturday (Nov 23rd) at 7:00pm in Reynolds against Utah Valley, with former NC State assistant coach Adam Hall now the head coach of that team.

Trent is hosting again, and Mike Macchiavello pops in (out in Colorado with Trent), and they talk about how a culture of being "blue collar" and outworking opponents is what defines NC State wrestling, especially in those first few years that Pop was at NC State.
