Sixth-ranked NC State wrestling improves to 3-0 in conference action after taking down 15th-ranked Pittsburgh by a 22-13 score at home Friday night.
The dual featured a staggering seven ranked match-ups between wrestlers in their respective weight classes, including two Midlands champions from this past December on the side of Pitt, who accounted for two of Pitt's three wins tonight.
Starting at the Wolfpack's usual - 125 lbs - the lower weights for NC State carried steam through the first half of the match to push their control over the scoreboard.
Vince Robinson started out the night putting three points on the board from a 6-2 decision over 25th-ranked Nick Babin, a 2023 NCAA Qualifier. Following his lead,
Kai Orine delivered bonus points and fueled crowd excitement when he secured a technical fall in the second period for the team to go up 8-0.
At 141 pounds,
Tyler Tracy dropped a tight match by a 9-5 score to give Pitt it's first points of the night, making the team scores 8-3.
The Pack would go on to take the next three bouts at 149, 157, and 165 pounds to strengthen the team lead moving into the back half of the dual.
Koy Buesgens solidified a key match when he upset former Wolfpack member, 21st-ranked Finn Solomon with just one takedown.
Ed Scott handled business with a 5-3 win in his bout over his opponent, 25th-ranked Dylan Evans.
Derek Fields took his opportunity to seal bonus points for his team to take NC State up 18-3.
NC State dropped the next three bouts at 174, 184, and 197 pounds to bring Pitt back into striking distance on the team scoreboard. At 174 lbs,
Matty Singleton fell to 20th-ranked Luca Augustine in extended overtime by a 3-2 score after going through sudden victory and tiebreaker periods.
The 184 pound match remained close up until the end, when
Dylan Fishback had a 1-0 lead to start the third period but 15th-ranked Reece Heller recorded the only two-point reversal off the night, followed by a takedown to win 6-2.
Despite taking injury time early on in the bout,
Christian Knop continued to wrestle but fell by a major decision at 197 lbs to 11th-ranked Mac Stout, moving the team scores within single digits.
The night concluded with the 285 pound final between fourth-ranked
Isaac Trumble and the Panther's 13th-ranked Dayton Pitzer. Pitt entered the bout with a chance to even up the team score down 13-18. Trumble came out with a decisive 10-1 victory to seal the deal for the red-and-white.
Up NextThe Wolfpack travels to cross-town rival North Carolina next Friday, January 31 for its fourth ACC match-up of the season.
