The second-ranked NC State wrestling team (9-1) defeated Lock Haven 34-6 and No. 25 Northern Iowa 25-16 before coming up short to No. 10 Ohio State 20-21 on Tuesday afternoon at the 2023 Collegiate Duals.

Fourth-ranked NC State wrestling (9-1) hosts No. 9 Oklahoma State (4-0) for a top-10 match-up for its first home dual match of the season. The dual is set for a 7 p.m. start from Reynolds Coliseum and will be broadcasted on ESPNU.

Friday's match-up marks just the ninth meet between the red and orange. The series between the Wolfpack and the Cowboys began in 1990 at a neutral site competition. The late '90s sparked a home and home arrangement which wouldn't take place again until 12 years later. Oklahoma has dominated the series, only allowing one win for the Pack. The Cowboys' program has a tradition of winning almost like no other, the Wolfpack found consistent success when head coach, Pat Popolizio, came along in 2012.

Popolizio wrestled for John Smith and the Cowboys from 1997 to 2002 where he was a 3x NCAA qualifier and helped lead the team to top-5 national finishes (2nd, 3rd, 3rd, and 5th). He was also a two-time Big 12 All Academic selection and five-time recipient of the Oklahoma State Student-Athlete Award. During his senior year he was ranked No. 1 in the country at 184 pounds.

The fourth-ranked NC State wrestling team fell to the ninth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, 22-12, Friday evening in Reynolds Coliseum.

The meeting between the two top-10 programs was a sellout, the first ever for an NC State home match.

125 (3-0, Oklahoma State)
Troy Spratley and Jakob Camacho started the evening for the two teams. Spratley earned the Cowboys three points after defeating Camacho by a 7-3 decision.

133 (7-0, Oklahoma State)
Dalton Fix started with a quick 7-2 lead over Kai Orine, but Orine added an escape with one minute remaining in the third period to shrink Fix's lead to 7-3. With just seconds left on the clock, Fix recorded another three-point takedown to increase the Cowboys' team lead to 7-0.

141 (7-3, Oklahoma State)
Fourth-ranked Ryan Jack and seventh-ranked Tagen Jamison went scoreless through the first period, despite Jack coming close to a takedown. Jamison took the lead in the second period after a quick escape and later received three points for a takedown at the one minute mark. After an escape from Jack, the junior took down Jamison with five seconds on the clock to put NC State on the board and shrink the Cowboys' lead to four team points.

149 (7-7)
In the final second of the first period, fourth-ranked Jackson Arrington took down No. 19 Jordan Williams to take a 3-0 lead. To start the second period, he added a point for an escape and later added three more for a takedown with 15 seconds on the clock. Arrington added another three points in the third after recording his third takedown of the bout. The 10-0 shutout marked his third shutout this season and tied the match 7-7.

157 (10-7 Oklahoma State)
To start the second period, fifth-ranked Ed Scott put a point on the board after escaping from No. 24 Teague Travis. Travis started the third with a 3-1 lead and quickly added to it after recording a takedown. Scott managed to escape and later post a takedown of his own with 40 seconds remaining in the bout. Despite a last second escape for Scott, Travis took the upset, 7-6, and pushed the Cowboys in front 10-7 on the night.

165 (13-7 Oklahoma State)
Unranked AJ Kovacs held No. 2 Izzak Olejnik scoreless in the first period, followed by Olejnik getting on the board in the second period after recording an escape and a takedown, ending the period on top, 4-1. Kovacs recorded a second escape, but was unable to top Olejnik marking Oklahoma State's second-straight win.

174 (16-7 Oklahoma State)
After two periods, No. 32 Alex Faison held a 1-0 lead over Brayden Thompson and started the third period at the top position. Thompson managed to escape in the third, tying the score at 1-1 and forcing sudden victory. After six periods of action that saw multiple replay reviews, Thompson took three points with a 2-1 win over Faison as a result of riding time.

184 (19-7 Oklahoma State)
Redshirt-freshman Dylan Fishback held a 3-1 lead over third-ranked Dustin Plott through the first period, with a back-and-forth affair soon bringing the score to an 8-8 tie. A strong finish from Plott resulted in a 12-8 decision, giving Oklahoma State what would prove to be an insurmountable 19-7 advantage.

197 (19-12 Oklahoma State)
Second-ranked Trent Hidlay defeated Jersey Robb 19-4 in dominant fashion, highlighted by three takedowns in the second period to gain a 14-3 edge heading into the final frame. After two more takedowns and over two minutes of riding time in the third, Hidlay secured his 16th consecutive win.

285 (22-12 Oklahoma State)
Redshirt-junior Owen Trephan trailed Konner Doucet throughout the second and third period, but with 30 seconds remaining in the third, Trephan escaped to knot the score at 1-1. Doucet took the victory as a result of riding time, giving the Cowboys a 22-12 win over the Wolfpack.

A record crowd gathered to watch No. 4 NC State wrestling take on No. 9 Oklahoma State in perhaps the biggest home opener in school history, a highly anticipated top-10 bout.
However, when the dust settled, the Cowboys (5-0) proved to be the more dominant team, winning seven of 10 bouts and denying the Wolfpack (9-1) much reason to cheer for most of the night.
"First of all, I thought it was an awesome atmosphere and people showed up that's NC State Wolfpack people with pride in athletics," said head coach Pat Popolizio. "On the unfortunate side of things, our guys didn't have their best performance tonight, probably got out-wrestled in certain positions."

The match marked the first sellout in program history, breaking the previous attendance record set in the team's win over North Carolina in 2020. With a nationally-televised, top-10 matchup on hand, this looked like the perfect storm for another classic, and Wolfpack nation was amped up and ready to go in the Old Barn.
"It was awesome, you could tell how loud it was," said redshirt senior Trent Hidlay. "It speaks a lot to what our program is and what we've been able to do the past few years to get such a huge gathering here."
While the Wolfpack-faithful appeared hungry for a landmark win, it was the Cowboys that started strong. Oklahoma State's No. 20 Troy Spratley kicked off the 125-pound bout with a takedown to secure an early lead. In round two, Spratley got his second takedown, dooming No. 15 redshirt junior Jakob Camacho to a loss.
The 133-pound match featured a pair of top-five wrestlers The Pack's No. 5 redshirt junior Kai Orine and No. 3 Daton Fix. Like the first bout, Oklahoma State started fast with a pair of takedowns early. Fighting an uphill battle to come back, Orine struggled to get Fix to the ground. A late takedown by Fix gave the Cowboys a major decision and a 7-0 lead.
Facing an early deficit, the Wolfpack desperately needed something to break its way. No. 4 junior Ryan Jack found himself in a dogfight with No. 7 Tagen Jamison in the pivotal 141-pound bout. In the third round Jamison began to pull away with an escape, taking a late 4-2 lead.
With the seconds ticking away and the crowd roaring, Jack stunned his opponent with a critical takedown at the edge of the mat. With less than ten seconds remaining in the round, Jack contained Jamison and secured a 5-4 win, much to the delight of the home crowd.
"As soon as he let up, my thought was just 'go'," Jack said. "I knew I could get to his leg and I knew he was finished if I got to his leg."
Riding off the spark from his teammate, No. 4 sophomore Jackson Arrington continued the momentum with a dominant 10-0 major decision over No. 21 Jordan Williams in 149, tying the team score 7-7 and making the match interesting.

With the score now even, the Pack found itself in position to seize the momentum of the match when No. 5 junior Ed Scott faced No. 24 Teague Travis in the 157-pound bout. While the first two rounds were a defensive struggle, the final round provided plenty of action and both wrestlers left everything on the mat. During the round, Travis earned a reversal for two points before Scott picked up a takedown. A second reversal by Travis clinched a 7-6 Cowboy victory.
Facing a tall task against No. 3 Izzak Olejnik, sophomore AJ Kovacs fought hard, keeping the score tied through the first period, but fell behind 4-1 in the second period and ended up losing an 8-3 decision in the 165, causing the Cowboys to increase their lead to 13-7.
Once again, the Wolfpack found itself lagging behind Oklahoma State. With four matches remaining and a six point deficit, No. 32 fifth-year Alex Faison faced a must-win against Brayden Thompson in the 174-pound bout. Even after three rounds the wrestlers battled an additional three, leading to a one-point win for Thompson due to a riding time point that broke the tie.
No. 12 freshman Dylan Fishback got out to a quick start against No. 3 Dustin Plott in 184 with a 3-1 lead through the first period, but that lead quickly evaporated when Plott used a dominant second period to take an 8-4 lead into the third. Fishback battled back, managing to tie the score 8-8, but Plott closed it out for a 12-8 win and made victory for the Cowboys nearly a lock.
Despite Oklahoma State building a comfortable lead, No. 2 redshirt senior Trent Hidlay remained hungry for a win and eviscerated Jersey Robb in the 197-pound bout. The Wolfpack star posted a whopping six takedowns, tossing Robb around like a ragdoll. The end result was a 20-4 tech fall.
"You got to do your job even with the duel meet out of reach," Hidlay said. "Put on a good face and compete as hard as you can it's a disappointing performance by our team… We can choose to get better from it or let it hurt."
Needing a miracle, No. 15 junior Owen Trephan took the mat for the heavyweight bout against No. 12 Konner Doucet. The bout was low-scoring but became exciting towards the end when Trephan scored an escape to tie it up 1-1 with 30 seconds remaining. However, Doucet took the win from riding time, solidifying the 22-12 win for the Cowboys.
Obviously, this wasn't the result the Wolfpack was looking for, especially considering it marked the program's first home loss since 2019. However, this match against a national-championship contender gave the team an opportunity to look itself in the mirror and assess how it can get to where it ultimately wants to be: competing for a national championship.
"We know we've got a lot of room to improve," Popolizio said. "If you're going to take losses, you just don't want them to be the last weekend of the season…We wanted to be tested; we set our schedule really hard this year for a reason, so every time these guys get to compete, they know where they're at."
NC State will have one more match to prepare for conference play when it travels to face Hofstra on Sunday Jan. 7 at 11:30 a.m. before opening conference play at Pitt on Friday Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

Following a disappointing home loss to No. 9 Oklahoma State, NC State wrestling successfully bounced back with a 43-5 win at Hofstra.
The Wolfpack (10-2) had a quick two-day turnaround from its loss to the Cowboys before traveling north to face the Pride (3-3). Despite the challenge, the red-and-white came out the gate strong and disposed of Hofstra early.
Unlike its last dual meet, the Pack started fast when redshirt sophomore Brock DelSignore earned a major decision in the 197-pound bout. Giving DelSignore match experience is very important given that the Pack's super star in the weight class redshirt senior Trent Hidlay will be out of collegiate eligibility after this season.

Next up, No. 16 redshirt junior Owen Trephan took on No. 25 Keaton Kluever in the heavyweight bout. This bout was the only ranked-on-ranked matchup, giving it extra intrigue. Trephan took care of business with an 11-3 major decision of his own, bouncing back from a loss on Friday.
The major decisions continued to roll in for the Pack in the 125-pound class as graduate student Jarrett Trombley earned an impressive 9-0 shutout. A forfeit by Hofstra in the 133-pound class extended NC State's lead to 18-0, putting the dual meet nearly out of reach early on.

With an already commanding lead, No. 4 junior Ryan Jack made a statement in the 141-pound bout with a 21-4 tech fall over Alex Turley. Jack was one of only three Pack wrestlers to win his match on Friday and is setting himself up for a potential title run with his success this year.
Hofstra finally showed some life in the 149-pound bout, earning its only points of the dual meet. The Pride's Noah Tapia showed up freshman Trevor Kantor with a 21-3 tech fall, showing the young wolf that he has much to learn. However, that was the last good moment for the Pride, as NC State turned the heat back up on Hofstra in the bouts that followed.
In the 157-pound bout, No. 5 junior Ed Scott clinched a victory in just the first round, tacking on six points to the Pack's team score and giving the red-and-white a 29-5 lead. No. 20 redshirt sophomore Derek Fields then followed up Scott in the 165-pound class with a 20-4 tech fall, icing off Matt Rogers in just two rounds.
The Pack wasn't finished ending bouts early the 174-pound match featuring No. 32 fifth year Alex Faison also ended in the second round. Faison routed the Pride's Eric Shindel in a 22-4 tech fall. Redshirt junior Dylan Reinert then cleaned up the 184-pound bout to end the meet with a major decision, leading to a 43-5 NC State victory over Hofstra.
Next up, the Wolfpack will open ACC play in an away match against Pitt on Friday, Jan. 26. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and will be available on the ACC Networ

Trombley gets the first ACC start at 125 and looks great (ironically against a Camacho). With Jacob Camacho really struggling, coaches might have a tough decision moving forward.

Orine dominates a ranked wrestler. State looks to have more juice tonight, Trombley really set the tone.

Agreed. What a weird match. Could've been an easy win for Jack, but the odd scramble takedown (legit) for Pitt and then they called a takedown while Jack was in the process of an arm throw? Even the Pitt wrestler didn't think it was a takedown.

Really impressive matches from Faison and Fields. They are big X factors for getting points at NCAAs. Get a couple wins out of them and you instantly raise the floor for this team.

Eighth-ranked NC State wrestling (11-2, 1-0 ACC) opened their conference slate with a 31-6 victory over No. 19 Pitt (7-6, 0-1 ACC) Friday evening.

The Wolfpack won eight bouts on the night, acquiring six individual ranked wins. Derek Fields and Alex Faison sealed back-to-back upsets at 165 and 174 pounds to strike down Pitt's chance to come back in front of 2,000 spectators.

Jarrett Trombley re-entered the lineup at 125 pounds to start off the night in the steel city. His major decision over Pitt's #31 Colton Camacho put the red-and-white on the board first. Sixth-ranked Kai Orine pushed the lead with his own major decision over a top-20 opponent.

Pitt got on the board after Cole Matthews defeated Ryan Jack 15-10 in a nail biting bout that included multiple reviews by the refs on calls.

Fourth-ranked Jackson Arrington propelled the energy for his team after he defeated his former teammate #29 Finn Solomon in another close battle at 149 pounds. NC State wouldn't slow down again for the next three match-ups.

Seventh-ranked Ed Scott got his job done with a 16-3 controlling win at 157 pounds to make the team score 15-3. Fields and Faison performed in the spotlight with their upset victories to secure their team win.

Dylan Fishback was knotted up with Pitt's #12 Reece Heller at 3-3 start the third period. Heller secured an escape right away and Fishback was unable to score, coming up short 3-4 and doubling the Panther's team score to six.

Fourth-ranked Trent Hidlay at 197 pounds and No. 14 Owen Trephan at 285 pounds put the nails in the coffin when they each handled business with technical falls.

Next up, the Wolfpack come back home to host triangle rival, North Carolina on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. on the ACC Network.
