The NC State track and field program put their talent on display on the first day of the Hokie Invitational, establishing three new school records.

DISTANCE

The Wolfpack opened action on day one of the Hokie Invitational in the women's mile. Senior Sydney Seymour finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 4:46.64, a new personal best. She was followed by her teammates Grace Hartman (4:48.24) and Brooke Rauber (4:50.88), who placed sixth and seventh in the event, respectively.

In the men's mile, the Pack saw two athletes finish in the top five. Ian Harrison finished third overall with a time of 4:01.09, which is now the fourth best mark in school history. NC State junior Brett Gardner recorded a new personal best with a time of 4:01.33, a mark that placed him fourth overall in the event and gives him the fifth-best mark in the history of the program.

Freshmen Ryan Motondo (4:16.47) and Patrick Gibbons (4:17.33) also participated in the event, both setting new personal bests.

Sam Bush earned a time of 2:45.39 in the women's 1000m, finishing fifth and recording the second best time in school history. She now holds the first and second-best times in program history for the event. Seymour finished ninth overall with a time of 2:51.28, which is good for sixth-best all-time at NC State.

Hartman also recorded a top-10 program mark with a time of 2:53.39, the eighth-best in school history.

Zach Hughes made history in the men's 1000m, producing a time of 2:23.28 (2:23.279) to claim the school record for the event. This mark is also good for a new personal best. Fellow sophomore Jake Toomey (2:25.87) also put his name in the record books, finishing with the fifth-best time ever recorded in the program, while also setting a new personal best.

Another record was broken in the women's 600m. Caroline Lewis recorded a personal best time of 1:34.73 to finish ninth in the event and claim the best time in school history.

In the men's 600m, Kyle Durham finished third with a time of 1:19.69, a mark that now sits at second-best all time at NC State, behind only his own record of 1:19.48, which he set last season.

John Malach posted a personal best time of 8:19.36 in the men's 3000m, a mark which earned him third place overall.

SPRINTS

Senior Ally Henson moved on to the women's 60m hurdle final after finishing sixth overall in the prelims with a time of 8.61. This time is now eighth-best in program history. She posted a time of 8.55 in the final to claim sixth place. This time is now tied with teammate Timara Chapman for the seventh-best mark all-time for the program.

In the men's 60m hurdle prelim, NC State saw a pair of seniors advance to the final with top-10 program finishes. Cameron Murray placed first with a time of 7.75, a mark which now sits at third best in school history. Josh Brockman set a personal best with a time of 7.80 to claim second place, which is now fourth all-time at NC State.

Murray wasn't done entering his name into the record books, as he broke a school record while also finishing first in the men's 60m hurdle finals with a new personal best time of 7.67. He now holds the top three times in Wolfpack history for the event and is responsible for four of the 10 best all-time marks in the program. His time of 7.67 is good for the best time in the nation. Brockman posted another 7.80 time to tie his new personal best and finish second in the final.

Imunique Archie (7.789) and Chapman (7.86) each set a personal best in the women's 60m prelims.

On the men's side of the 60m prelims, Alex Lang advanced to the final and set a new personal best while finishing third overall with a time of 6.67. This is now good for the fourth-best all-time program mark. Sophomore Alexander Nunley placed 10th overall with a time of 6.876.

Henry Young also participated in the event and set a new personal best time of 6.89.

More personal bests were set in the Women's 300m final as Archie (42.24) and Allison Payton (42.34) each recorded new career-best marks.

JUMPS

The Pack saw three athletes earn top-10 finishes in the women's long jump. Jirah Sidberry recorded a season best jump of 5.98m (19'7.50") to finish fourth overall. This jump is also good for the ninth-best in school history. Timara Chapman earned fifth place with a new personal best jump of 5.91m (19'4.75"), while Zahra Bichara set a new personal best with a jump of 5.90m (19'4.25") and claimed sixth.

In the men's long jump, Cameron Murray set a new personal best while also claiming second place with a jump of 7.54m (24'9.0"). Josh Brockman came in third with a mark of 7.50m (24'7.25) and Jamar Davis earned fourth overall with a jump of 7.50m (24'6.25").

Sophomore William Sistruck also participated in the event for the Wolfpack, receiving seventh place and setting a new personal best of 7.15m (23'5.50").

THROWS

Mahkayla Hart claimed sixth place in the women's weight throw with a best throw of 16.91m (55'5.75"). Fellow sophomore Makala Wright recorded a best throw of 16.85m (55'3.50"), which was good for eighth overall.

Thought it would be a good time to give a midyear check in on how the women's incoming recruits for fall 2023 are doing so far through XC (for the distance runners) and early part of Indoor Track. Looking at results it looks like women's mid distance and distance is going to remain in very good hands moving forwards. Recruiting is a bit more fluid in Track and field since there's only so many scholarships available, so many of the athletes are going to be preferred walkons. So while its not very likely the people already known to be committed will change, there's a good chance we'll be adding a few more people in the coming months, particularly in the sprints, jumps and throws.

Kate Putman - Cicero, NY - Putman is a very good XC runner. She finished 8th at the NY Class A state championships and ran a 5k best of 17:30 this year (also ran a 16:46 3 mile, which converts roughly to a 17:21 5k). The 17:30 was the 3rd fastest time run by a girl in NY across all classifications. But mid distance on the track is where she really seems to shine. So far she has competed in just 5 meets from December through this weekend, but her great times over a range of events is astonishing. She has the 13th fastest time in NY and 27th fastest in the country in the 600m with a time of 1:38.04. She has the 2nd fastest time in NY and 4th fastest time in the country in the 1000m with a 2:53.64. She has the #1 time in NY and the 2nd fastest time in the country in the Mile so far, with a time of 4:45.90. And finally she has the 2nd fastest time in NY and the 4th fastest time nationally in the 3000m with a time of 9:46.09. She instantly makes our track team better when she arrives on campus.

Angelina Napoleon - Allegany, NY - Napoleon is a very good XC runner. She finished 1st in the NY Class C State Championships, and finished 16th in the Champs Sports National Championships. Her 17:52 was the 9th fastest time by a girl in NY this year across all classifications. But like Putman mid distance seems to be her biggest strength. She has the #1 1000m time in NY and 3rd nationally (just ahead of Putman) with a 2:52.45. She has the #4 mile time in NY and 9th in the country with a 4:55.70. She also shows off what a great athlete she is with the #4 High Jump height in NY so far with a jump of 5'5".

Jolena Quarzo - Brownsville, PA - Quarzo is a great distance runner. She won the Pennsylvania Class AA State Championship as well as Nike Team Cross Nationals NE regional. She finished 37th at the Nike Team Cross Nationals. Her best time this year was a 17:49 which was the 9th fastest by a girl in PA this year. She has just recently opened her Indoor season, but has already run a 5:01.18 1600m, which is the 2nd fastest in PA and 18th fastest nationally.

Mia Hall - Flagstaff, AZ - She is a great distance runner. She won the Arizona D2/D3 state championships and finished 41st in the Nike Team Cross SW Regional championships. She ran 2nd fastest 5k in Arizona this year with a 17:28.63 (as well as a 16:17 3 mile which converts to roughly a 16:51.81 which would be the 15th fastest in the nation. She historically has not competed in the Indoor track season. She will compete again when Outdoor Track begins, where she had the #1 time in AZ in the 3200m with a 10:28.59 as a junior.

Madison Moraja - Weddington High School Matthews, NC - A really solid sprinter/mid-d runner. She does not run cross country and she has not opened up her Indoor season yet. Last year as a junior in Indoors, she had the 16th fastest time in NC in the 300m dash, with a time of 41.24s. she had the 10th fastest time in NC In the 400m, with a time of 58.94s. She also ranked 8th in NC and 43rd nationally in the 500m with a time of 1:17.94. She competes anywhere between 100 and 800 meters.

For the Katelyn Tuohy fans out there, she's going to be opening up her Indoor season this saturday in an elite mile field at the Dr. Sander Invitational in NYC. This will be the first time she has raced a mile in college so it will be interesting to see a time from a field full of top tier pros like Ali Monson and Josette Morris.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
After a crazy weekend of records being broken and fast times being run across the the country, i was checking the updated rankings for Indoor Nationals Qualifying and thought i'd give an update on where NC State athletes stand right now (with about a month and 1-2 more fast meets still to go), and more importantly where the qualifying standard stands for the athletes that are just gearing up for future events to qualify.

Indoors does not have Regional meets like Outdoors does so qualifying is purely based on times run during the indoor season (Dec 1 - Feb 26). The top 16 athletes qualify for each individual race and the top 12 relay teams qualify. Tiebreakers are applied so that they dont go over the 16 or 12 limit.

If the season ended today, these are the athletes that would qualify on the women's side, and what the 16th place standard currently is compared to what it took last season:

60M - Standard currently set at 7.28 seconds. Last season it took a time of 7.23 seconds to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Imunique Archie has our best performance this season at 7.79 seconds.

200M - Standard currently set at 23.38 seconds. Last season it took a time of 23.24 seconds to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Ally Henson has our best performance this season at 25.44 seconds.

400M - Standard currently set at 53.06 seconds. Last season it took 52.33 seconds to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Timara Chapman has our best performance this season at 56.21 seconds.

800M - Standard currently set at 2:05.13. Last season it took 2:04.03 to qualify. Last season it took We've only had one runner even attempt an 800 this year, Caroline Lewis with a 2:13.30. No idea if anyone else on the team will give it a crack at a later date.

1 Mile - Katelyn Tuohy is safely qualified here with her NCAA leading (and record) 4:24.26. Standard currently set at 4:35.72. Last season it took a 4:34.89 to qualify. Kelsey Chmiel and Samantha Bush have PB's close enough to this that i think they could qualify if they focused on it, but its hard to say if they are going to run any fast enough mile races moving forwards to qualify. Both are entered into the 3000 next weekend instead of the mile.

3000M - Samantha Bush is safely qualified here, with the 3rd best time in the NCAA so far 8:54.12. Standard currently set at 9:08.12. Last season it took a 9:00.60 to qualify. Katelyn Tuohy will certainly qualify in two weeks when she runs the Millrose 3000M, and Kelsey Chmiel is running this event this coming weekend in a fast race so I would imagine she qualifies as well with her 8:59 PB from last year in the event. I don't foresee anyone else qualifying, but Sydney Seymour and Grace Hartman have 9:15 and 9:16 PR's respectively so never say never.

5000M - quick note, 46 of the top 50 times in the NCAA this year are still from that Dec 3rd meet at Boston. What an absurdly fast track that is. Tuohy, Chmiel and Seymour are currently qualified for this event, all in the top 10 qualifiers so they would appear to be safe. Standard currently is at 15:43.98. Last season it took a 15:41.51 to qualify. Samantha Bush certainly has the ability to qualify here but she focused on the 3000m/DMR double at Indoor nationals last year so I would think it would follow suit this year.

60M Hurdles - Standard currently set at 8.20 seconds. Last season it took an 8.07 to qualify. It's a definite longshot that we have anyone qualify at this event. Ally Henson has our best this year with an 8.55 seconds, but she does have a PB of 8.39 seconds from ACC Indoor's last season, so a great performance could be in there on the right day.

4x400M - Standard currently set at 3:32.40. Last season it took a 3:32.38 to qualify. Probably the longest shot we are to qualify at any event other than the Pole Vault where we have Pole Vaulters on the roster. For perspective our School Record indoors in this event is 3:44.51.

DMR - Standard currently set at 11:05.66. Last season it took 10:58.37 to qualify. We have not raced a DMR yet but we likely will at ACC's. What combination of athletes will run to qualify is the real question, we certainly have the athletes to do it. The 400 leg will be a big question mark. I could see one of Tuohy or Chmiel running this at ACC's to qualify the team but i doubt either would run it at Nationals. Chmiel ran it last year at ACC's to help them qualify but Savannah Shaw took her place as the Mile anchor at Nationals.

High Jump - Standard currently set at 6' 0". Last season it took 6' 0" to qualify. We have no one even close to this standard. Timara Chapman jumped 5'7" as part of a Pentathlon, but the highest open High Jump was have this year is 5' 1".

Pole Vault - We do not compete anyone in this event.

Long Jump - Standard currently set at 20' 5". Last season it took 20'10" to qualify. Jirah Sidberry is the most likely. she has jumped 19' 7.5" this season but has a PB from last year of 20' 4.25" which is with trying to qualify. Timara Chapman is a longshot but has a PB of 19' 11" which is really solid.

Triple Jump - Standard currently set at 42' 8". Last season it took 43' 10" to qualify. Jirah Sidberry's best this season is 41' 8.5", but she does have a 42' 2" PB from ACC Indoors last season.

Shot Put - Standard currently set at 55' 2.75". Last season it took 56' 1.25" to qualify. We are not very competitive in this event. Mahkayla Hart has our best throw this season at 45' 9".

Weight Throw - Standard currently set at 70' 5.25". Last season it took 72' 8" to qualify. We are not very competitive in this event either. Mahkayla Hart has our best throw this season at 59' 5.75"".

Pentathlon - Standard currently set at 4038 points. Last season it took 4099 points to qualify. Timara Chapman is currently right outside qualification at 19th in the rankings with a best score of 4005 points. She does have a PB of 4094 points so qualification is certainly on the table for her.

Elite fields currently announced for this weekend's Camel City Invite. Entries can continue through tonight so it may not be finalized until tomorrow.

On the Women's side we have 2 women registered in the 3000 elite field, Kelsey Chmiel and Sydney Seymour. Also Samantha Bush is running in the Elite Mile field along with Amaris Tyynismaa who is running unattached so not technically making her NC State debut. Nobody listed in the 800m field.

The other non-elite fields are not release yet, but last year NC State only brought a handful of field athletes along with the distance runners who were running the elite fields.

update to the NCAA qualifying with two weeks to go before ACC's. Kelsey Chmiel's 3000M effort when converted to a banked 200m track (which is standard) is updated to a 8:54.67. If the season ended today this would have her qualified as 5th best in the country at this point\, and this should make her safely qualified in the 3000M at this point.

Samantha Bush's effort in the Mile fell just short after conversion, giving her a 4:35.07 mile which is good for 19th best in the country.

The races that currently show on the Gopack schedule historically haven't fielded great distance fields (outside of the DMR at JDL in two weeks), so I wonder if NC State looks for a fast race for Bush in the Mile if she wants to give herself options for nationals, but she is already qualified in the 3000M and will likely be part of the DMR should they qualify so she may be satisfied at this point.

As i was thinking, NC State did find a fast meet for a bunch of their distance runners to try to get one last fast time in before ACC's (I assume sprints/jumps/throws are still going to Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson this weekend).

There are several distance runners on the entry list for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston this weekend. This meet takes place on the super fast track that some of our runners ran on in December and features some great fields so fast times should be readily available.

People registered in multiple events will likely drop one of them, but for now on the Women's side i'm seeing:

Samantha Bush and Amaris Tyynismaa (unattached) in the Mile

Samantha Bush, Amaris Tyynismaa (unattached), Savannah Shaw, Sydney Seymour, Grace Hartman, Brooke Rauber, & Gionna Quarzo in the 3000m

Gionna Quarzo and Grace Hartman in the 5000m

The rest of the team (including some other distance runners) will be down to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational. The distance fields are not as deep in this meet, but there are some incredible fields in the sprint/jumps. Adding some context to lay out how stacked the sprints/jumps are.

60M - Imunique Archie (8 of the top 16 athletes in the country are entered in this event)

200M - Imunique Archie, Jakerra Covington, Allison Payton (6 of the top 16 athletes in the country are entered in this event)

Running unattached, Amaris Tyynismaa finished 3rd in the second heat of the women's mile in Boston, in a great time of 4:32.56, a new PB for her. Samantha Bush finished 11th in the same race in a time of 4:37.90. Bush was with the lead pack until 400 to go and she was unable to respond to the move made by the leaders and fell off the pace a bit.

Sarah Latour ran a 4:51 in the mile.

seems like we had a lot of scratches in the women's 3k in Boston, only Savannah Shaw and Grace Hartman ended up running it.

Shaw was in Heat 2, and had a really nice rust buster after a few months unable to train, running a 9:12.96. Hartman was in Heat 3 and was with the leaders through about 2400 or so before fading off the pace and ending up at 9:24.67

Side note for this event, Hilda Olemomoi of Alabama has given Tuohy another mark to keep in mind tomorrow, as she ran a new NCAA leading 8:45.50. Parker Valby of Florida ran a new NCAA #2 of 8:49.71

Huge race for Gionna Quarzo. She came into today with an indoors 5000M PB of 16:15.67 and an overall 5000M PB of 15:56.55. She ran a 15:51.12 today for a huge indoors PB and an overall PB. It also makes her the 8th fastest indoors 5k runner in program history

small PB for her as well (she ran 4:45.9 earlier this year). She's incredibly versatile on the track, i'm not even sure what her best indoor event is.

And this time is almost as good as the PB Grace Hartman just ran in the mile (4:43.78) a week ago. Hopefully Putman can compare to what we are seeing/expecting from Hartman in cross country as well.
