NC State track and field sent athletes to compete in both the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina and the Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11. The Pack set three new school records over the course of the weekend.
At the Valentine Invite, four Wolfpack athletes raced in the women's distance events on Friday. In a very competitive field, junior Gionna Quarzo finished 18th in the 5000m. Her time of 15:51.12 is a new personal best and the eighth-best time in NC State history. In the mile, senior Samantha Bush clocked in at 4:37.90 to take 25th. Graduate student Savannah Shaw and freshman Grace Hartman raced in the 3000m, coming in 33rd and 50th, respectively.
The red-and-white sent a much bigger cohort to compete in the shorter distance and the throwing events at the Tiger Paw Invitational. The first day of competition was highlighted by graduate student Cameron Murray's school record-breaking performance in the men's 60m hurdle final. Murray clocked in at 7.61, which earned him second place.
Junior Makala Wright and graduate students Sarah LaTour and Jamar Davis took home the Pack's only other podium finishes of the day. Davis leaped 7.68m to take third in the men's long jump, and LaTour clocked in at 4:51.38 to place third in the women's mile. In the women's weight throw, Wright took first with her throw of 18.76m. Her mark is the sixth-best in Wolfpack history.

On Saturday, NC State's men's distance squad took the stage at the Valentine Invite. Junior Zach Huges set a new school record in the 800m, coming in at 1:49.55. In the men's 5000m, graduate student Ian Shanklin, junior Ian Harrison and freshman David Vorbach finished 10th, 17th and 26th, respectively.
The second day of competition in Clemson saw senior Caroline Lewis record a new personal best in the 800m at 2:12.48, a time that now ranks 10th-best in school history. In the men's 800m, freshman Patrick Gibbons and sophomores Wesley Larson and Grant Howlett all recorded personal bests.
Juniors Brett Gardner and Jake Toomey continued the trend in the men's mile, setting new personal bests of their own. Gardner's mark of 3:58.15 is the second-best in NC State history. Sophomore Jakerra Covington rounded out the red-and-white slew of personal bests, leaping 1.59m in the high jump.
The Pack aims to set some more school records on Friday, Feb. 17 when part of the team travels to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to compete in the JDL DMR Invitational while another Wolfpack squad heads to Blacksburg, Virginia to compete in the VT Challenge.

  • The NC State track and field team wrapped up weekend action at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C. and the Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass. with two new school records and multiple new PRs.

MIDDLE DISTANCE

Zach Hughes broke the school record for the men's 800m with his effort of 1:49.55 at the Valentine Invite.

Senior Laurel Black claimed fourth at the Tiger Paw Invite with her new personal best time of 10:00.04 in the women's 3000m.

In the women's 800m, Caroline Lewis recorded a time of 2:12.48 to set a new personal best and claim the 10th-best time in NC State history.

On the men's side of the 800m, Patrick Gibbons debuted in the event with a mark of 1:53.61, while teammates Wesley Larson (1:54.33) and Grant Howlett (1:54.74) each recorded new personal best times.

Brett Gardner set a new personal best in the men's mile with his mark of 3:58.15, good for the
second-best time in school history. Jake Toomey also set a new personal best in the event, clocking in at 4:07.84.

JUMPS

In the women's high jump, Jakerra Covington earned a mark of 1.59m (5'02.50") at the Tiger Paw Invite to claim a new personal best.

Kyzaiah Stone represented NC State in the men's high jump, taking seventh place with a leap of 2.11m (6'11.00").

DISTANCE

The Pack saw three athletes compete in the men's 5000m at the Valentine Invite. Ian Shanklin established a new school record with his personal best time of 13:29.61. Joining Shanklin in the event were Ian Harrison (13:35.71) and David Vorbach (13:42.68), who set new personal best marks as well. Each athletes time in the event beat the previous school record, giving these athletes the top three marks in NC State history.

Since there is only 1 week left of the regular season next weekend, and traditionally NC State only really runs a DMR if they want to along with the field athletes competing at VT, figured id give a (near) final update to the NCAA qualifying standards as they stand:

If the season ended today, these are the athletes that would qualify on the Men's side, and what the 16th place standard currently is compared to what it took last season. In 8 of 15 events (i didn't research pole vault) it is already more difficult to qualify in the event than it was last year even with a full weekend of regular season meets + conference championships:

60M - Standard currently set at 7.21 seconds. Last season it took a time of 7.23 seconds to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this season.. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Imunique Archie has our best performance this season at 7.76 seconds.

200M - Standard currently set at 23.08 seconds. Last season it took a time of 23.24 seconds to qualify, so its already more difficult to qualify this season. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Ally Henson has our best performance this season at 25.44 seconds.

400M - Standard currently set at 52.42 seconds. Last season it took 52.33 seconds to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Timara Chapman has our best performance this season at 56.21 seconds.

800M - Standard currently set at 2:03.75. Last season it took 2:04.03 to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this season. Caroline Lewis is the only runner that's attempted an 800 this season and her PB is in the 2:12 range..

1 Mile - Katelyn Tuohy is safely qualified here with her NCAA leading (and record) 4:24.26. Standard currently set at 4:33.66. Last season it only took a 4:34.89 to qualify. Hard to say if Samantha Bush is going to find another fast mile in the next two weeks after not being able to attain the standard in the last few weeks of fast races. Worth noting that Amaris Tyynismaa would be qualified right now if she was eligible to run this season.

3000M - Once again here Katelyn Tuohy is safely qualified as top seed with her new collegiate record of 8:35.20. Samantha Bush is safely qualified here, with the 6th best time in the NCAA so far 8:54.12, along with Kelsey Chmiel in 9th with 8:54.67 (converted from flat track). Standard currently set at 8:57.12. Last season it only took a 9:00.60 to qualify, so it's already much more difficult to qualify this season.

5000M - Tuohy, Chmiel and Sydney Seymour are currently qualified for this event, all in the top 12 qualifiers so they would appear to be safe. Standard currently is at 15:42.47. Last season it took a 15:41.51 to qualify.

60M Hurdles - Standard currently set at 8.13 seconds. Last season it took an 8.07 to qualify. It's a definite longshot that we have anyone qualify at this event. Ally Henson has our best this year with an 8.55 seconds, but she does have a PB of 8.39 seconds from ACC Indoor's last season, so a great performance could be in there on the right day.

4x400M - Standard currently set at 3:31.37. Last season it took a 3:32.38 to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this season. Probably the longest shot we are to qualify at any event other than the Pole Vault where we have Pole Vaulters on the roster. For perspective our School Record indoors in this event is 3:44.51.

DMR - Standard currently set at 10:59.09. Last season it took 10:58.37 to qualify. We have not raced a DMR yet but we likely will at the JDL DMR Invite and/or at ACC's. What combination of athletes will run to qualify is the real question, we certainly have the athletes to do it. The 400 leg will be a big question mark. I could see one of Tuohy or Chmiel running this at ACC's to qualify the team but i doubt either would run it at Nationals. Chmiel ran it last year at ACC's to help them qualify but Savannah Shaw took her place as the Mile anchor at Nationals.

High Jump - Standard currently set at 6' 0.5". Last season it took 6' 0" to qualify, so it's already more difficult to qualify this season. We have no one even close to this standard. Timara Chapman jumped 5'7" as part of a Pentathlon, but the highest open High Jump was have this year is 5' 1".

Pole Vault - We do not compete anyone in this event.

Long Jump - Standard currently set at 20' 8". Last season it took 20'10" to qualify. Jirah Sidberry is currently 19th in the country with a jump of 20' 5.25". She has 1-2 more chances this next weekend and at conferences to secure a qualifying spot.

Triple Jump - Standard currently set at 43' 1.75"". Last season it took 43' 10" to qualify. Jirah Sidberry's best this season is 41' 8.5", but she does have a 42' 2" PB from ACC Indoors last season.

Shot Put - Standard currently set at 56' 4". Last season it took 56' 1.25" to qualify, so its already more difficult to qualify this season. We are not very competitive in this event. Mahkayla Hart has our best throw this season at 45' 9".

Weight Throw - Standard currently set at 71' 5.25". Last season it took 72' 8" to qualify. We are not very competitive in this event either. Mahkayla Hart has our best throw this season at 62' 6".

Pentathlon - Standard currently set at 4084 points. Last season it took 4099 points to qualify. Timara Chapman is currently right outside qualification at 27th in the rankings with a best score of 4005 points. She does have a PB of 4094 points so qualification is certainly on the table for her.

Looks like the lineup for the Women's DMR will be Timara Chapman, Samantha Bush, Grace Hartman and Savannah Shaw.

Timara Chapman will run the 400, but other than that unclear which legs the rest are running. Going off of PR's dont think this group is likely to break 11:00 so they'll have to run DMR again at ACC's most likely if they want to qualify for Nationals. Hope they can prove me wrong though.

Also Marlee Starliper is listed in the 3000m on saturday. She may just be a pacer but hopefully that means she is close to healthy and can run outdoors.

So Tuohy surprised and ran the DMR anchor leg instead of Grace Hartman. Won in 10:55.49 which is a new school record by 3 seconds and is surely good enough to qualify for Nationals. Tuohy anchored in 4:27 on a flat track, she got the baton about a second back and won by 7 seconds over two outstanding milers from VT and UVA.

NC State track and field competed in two different meets on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18: the VT Challenge in Blacksburg, Virginia, and the JDL DMR Invite in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the course of the weekend, the Pack saw a new school record and tallied a number of top-10 finishes.

On day one of competition, graduate studentsSavannah Shaw and Timara Chapman, senior Sam Bush and junior Katelyn Tuohy stole the show, setting an NC State record in the women's distance medley relay at the JDL DMR Invite. Their converted time of 10 minutes and 48.55 seconds ranks second amongst women's NCAA qualifiers for the event.

At the VT Challenge, Friday's best performances from the Wolfpack came from the throwing squad, which notched three podium finishes. In the women's weight throw, junior Makala Wright and sophomore Sydney Freeman took second and third place, respectively. Wright's throw of 18.10m is the eighth-best in school history. Junior Mahkayla Hart also competed in the event, capturing fifth place with her throw of 17.06m. On the men's side, freshman Nathan Lau recorded a mark of 17.15m to claim second place and set a new personal best.

The only other red-and-white athletes that competed at the VT Challenge on Friday were sophomores Jakerra Covington and Alex Nunley. Covington placed sixth in the women's long jump and seventh in the 60m hurdle final while Nunley took fifth in the men's 60m.

Saturday's round of competition was less exciting but impressive nonetheless. Sophomore Grant Howlett was the only NC State athlete to compete at the JDL DMR Invite that day, collecting a 10th-place finish in the men's 800m. Back in Blacksburg, freshman Katie Horne, Hart and Freeman recorded top-10 finishes in the women's shot put with marks of 12.28m, 11.73m and 11.25m, respectively. Covington finished just behind them in 11th with a mark of 10.84m.

Nunley and Lau represented the Pack on the men's side as each athlete recorded a top-10 finish. In the shot put, Lau's mark of 14.46m earned him seventh place. Nunley took eighth in the 200m with a time of 22.62 seconds.

The Wolfpack concludes indoor regular season action with these two meets in the books. Up next, the red-and-white will travel to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Indoor ACC Championships beginning on Thursday, Feb. 23.

NC State goes 1-2 in the 5000m with Kelsey Chmiel winning and Sydney Seymour finishing 2nd. Gionna Quarzo placed 6th. It was a 21 point event for the women moving them into 2nd place in the team standings at this point.

NC state 3rd in the women's DMR with a 10:52. Tuohy ran an absurd 4:23.36 anchor split. State was over 9 seconds down when she got the baton and she made up over 6 seconds on the leaders but wasn't quite enough. Savannah Shaw and Caroline Lewis both were gapped by 5+ seconds on their legs leaving Bush (3rd fastest 800 split) and Tuohy (fastest 1600 split by 6 seconds) in a big hole.

The women end the day (5 of 17 events scored) in 3rd place with 27 points. 21 from the 1-2-6 placings of Chmiel-Seymour-Quarzo in the 5k and 6 from the 3rd place in the DMR. Timara Chapman was on pace for a top 5 finish in the Pentathlon but pulled out of the final event im assuming with an injury.

5th place after the first leg isn't good, but the 400 leg being slowest in the field by a full 2 seconds (and 6 seconds slower than the winner) is, um, no good. 7th place after 2 legs with 9 seconds to make up isn't gonna cut it. Bush ran strong and Tuohy ran her normal unbelievable (pretty close to her collegiate record for the mile - DMR being a relay split and 1600), but those two alone can't win the entire race.

yeah. If i had my wish we'd take some scholarship money (not a ton mind you, but just enough to give away a few partials) away from distance and direct some scholarship money towards sprints and field events. As much as i love the depth of our distance program and cross country success id like to do a little better in track and field as well. The men and women combining for 1 acc track title in the last ~35 years is ridiculous.

I mean our 400 leg today wouldn't even be top 8 indoors among NC high schoolers this year. Surely we can do better than that.

I've always been dismissive of the 400 leg of the DMR as being utterly unimportant. Well, can't be right all the time....

I'm a distance guy myself, and the women's XC team accounts for 66% of all our team national championships in school history (4 out of 6, not 2 out 4), but there's got to be some way to get at least a little bit of talent on the rest of the track team. We seem to often have about 1 other person on each team that can do some damage on a conference level and maybe even score some points at nationals, but that's it. We have a good hammer thrower for 3 years, then he graduates, then we have a good 100h guy for 3 years, then he graduates, then we have a good triple jumper for 3 years... (and also don't get me started on how I dislike the scoring system for track championships...)

(sorry if i'm a little grumpy about this result (and the men's 5k))

edit:
last week's DMR had Timara Chapman in the 400 running a 55.6. That 2.8 second difference would have put us right next to Duke for the win.
Chapman's main event is the pentathlon, which took place earlier in the day yesterday. She DNFed that, pulling out before the final event. If she got injured and we had to grab a last-minute replacement for the DMR... I know it's tough to find a replacement at the last minute, but still...

Tomorrow is the big day and NC State is looking for some good scoring opportunities including Sam Bush and potentially Grace Hartman in the mile, Katelyn Tuohy in the 3k (Sydney Seymour and Savannah Shaw are definitely running this and Bush and Hartman are entered but would have to double back from the mile and it would be Bush's 3rd event), and Jirah Sidberry in the triple jump.
