The NC State men's tennis team picked up a big road win on Sunday, knocking off Princeton, 5-2.

The win improves the Pack to 5-4 on the season heading into a 12-day layoff.

NC State improves to 5-2 all-time against the Tigers (2-6).
Doubles (NC State 1, Princeton 0)

The top two teams for the Pack got the job done right away.

The combo of Luca Staeheli and Robin Catry, ranked No. 43 in the country, knocked off Filippos Astreinidis and Fnu Nidunjianzan, 6-2, to get the early upper hand.

Staeheli and Catry never trailed or tied in the match. Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek followed up with a 6-3 win over Thomas Bosancic and Ellis Short to clinch the singles point.

Singles (NC State 4, Princeton 2)

NC State and Princeton split the first two singles' matches, with Luca Staeheli defeating Sebastian Sec in two sets and Princeton's Will Peters knocking off Martins Rocens, 6-3, 6-4.

That made the next few matches critical in terms of snatching back momentum. Van Sambeek made sure momentum was wearing red, knocking off Filippos Astreinidis, 6-4, 7-5. Shick and Catry kept it going, making it three straight wins by NC State to clinch the road win.

ven though it wasn't typical outdoor tennis weather, the NC State team brought the heat against Elon.

The Wolfpack didn't show any sign of a long layoff, defeating the Phoenix, 5-2.

Sunday's outdoor match was one last tune up before NC State dips into ACC play next weekend. With the win, NC State improves to 6-4 on the season.

Doubles (NC State 1, Elon 0)

NC State's Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek got the Pack off to a good start, pulling away from Ben Zipay and Ahmed Hosni on court three. The Wolfpack duo of Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli, ranked No. 50 in the country, wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court 2.

No. 39 Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joe Wayand didn't complete their match against Daniel Martin and Nicolas Campbell.

Singles (NC State 4, Elon 2)

Van Sambeek and Braden Shick didn't waste any time during singles action, finishing their matches in dominating fashion.

Shick took care of Veljko Krstic, 6-0, 6-1 and spent the rest of the day as a spectator. Not too long after, Van Sambeek finished off Oskar Antinheimo with an identical 6-0, 6-1 score.

The next few matches didn't go as easy for the Pack, but they built a 5-0 lead, thanks to sweeps by Wayand (6-1, 6-3) and Catry (6-3, 6-2).

The main attractions were courts 1 and 2, where each match ended in 10-point tiebreakers in favor of Elon.

NC State men's tennis swept the Clemson Tigers 4-0 in its 2023 ACC opener on Friday, March 3.

The Pack's second true road victory of the season came in a nearly-effortless sweep of the Tigers (9-4, 0-1 ACC). After taking the doubles point with some contention, NC State (7-4, 1-0 ACC) rolled in singles, quickly winning the three courts it needed to clinch the match.

The doubles round first saw sophomore Fons Van Sambeek and redshirt sophomore Braden Shick grab an easy 6-2 win on court three. Both players also went on to secure two of the Pack's three singles victories. To clinch the early point, however, the No. 50 pair of junior Luca Staeheli and senior Robin Catry gutted out a 7-5 victory on court two.

Staeheli then put on a perfect performance in the singles round, dominantly blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0 to gain the 2-0 advantage for the Wolfpack.

While NC State's final two wins didn't live up to Staeheli's stellar display on court four, they were still far-cries from being contentious. Van Sambeek struck next, capping off his strong day with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six. Finally, Shick brought the win home on court three with a 6-1, 7-5 victory, clinching the match at 4-0 and stopping play on all other courts.

No. 75 fifth-year senior Rafa Izquierdo Luque's three-set match was stopped with him leading 2-0 in his final set, while sophomore Damien Salvestre's three-setter was left unfinished at the beginning of his third. Meanwhile, Catry's match was stopped towards the end of the senior's second set.

The win over Clemson marks the Pack's first ACC win of the season. More importantly, however, it's NC State's third-straight victory a sign of a squad that is rapidly gaining momentum as it dives deeper into conference play.

The Wolfpack is set to face another ACC opponent on the road in its next match. NC State's showdown against Georgia Tech is set for Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m. in Atlanta.
