NC State's 2022-23 team season came to an end Saturday afternoon in Athens, Georgia.

The No. 25 Wolfpack dropped a tough battle to Oklahoma, 4-2.

With the loss, NC State finishes the team campaign 15-10 overall.

The Wolfpack took the doubles point from the Sooners and tied the score midway through the singles, but dropped some late matches.

Oklahoma is now 3-1 all-time versus NC State, making their 13th trip to the NCAA tournament in school history.

Doubles (NC State 1, Oklahoma 0)

NC State took the doubles point, winning on courts three and two over the Sooners.

The No. 3 duo of Fons Van Sambeek and Braden Shick picked up where they left off at the ACC tournament, getting a quick win to set the tone.

Van Sambeek and Shick jumped out to a 3-1 lead against Siphos Montsi and Jordan Hasson and never looked back. Van Sambeek and Shick won 6-3, extending their winning streak to three.

On court two, Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli got back in the win column, knocking off Alex Martinez/Justin Schlageter, 6-2. Like their counterparts on court three, Catry and Staeheli jumped out to a big lead early, going up 3-0 over Oklahoma.

The momentum never stopped as the All-ACC second team duo won their 10th match as a duo.

Singles (Oklahoma 4, NC State 1)

Four members of the Pack - Catry, Damien Salvestre, Shick, Joe Wayand - all dropped their first sets, giving the team an uphill battle from the jump.

Staeheli and Van Sambeek won their first sets to keep the Pack in the fight. Van Sambeek earned the one singles point for NC State, defeating Nathan Han in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Staeheli split the first two sets with Alex Martinez, forcing a third and decisive set.

That was also the case on court three between Damien Salvestre and Siphos Montsi.

Staeheli, once down 3-0 in the third, battled back to take a 4-3 lead. Early in the third set versus Montsi, Salvestre went down with an injury, but returned to the court. Montsi, though, defeated Salvestre, which turned out to be the point that clinched the win for the Sooners.

Oklahoma won in straight sets in the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 matchup.

The win by Van Sambeek tied the match at 2, but the Sooners won on court 6 (Baptiste Anselmo over Joe Wayand) and court 3 (Montsi over Salvestre) to advance.

Four members of the NC State men's tennis team start singles and doubles championship action this week in Orlando.

The NCAA tennis championships begin Monday at the USTA National Campus (May 22-27).

Senior Rafa Izquierdo Luque will begin singles play on Monday. Doubles action starts Tuesday with Izquierdo and Joe Wayand and Luca Staeheli and Robin Catry.

"I think it's good, especially for the returners, that they get to experience that final site," NC State head coach Kyle Spencer said. "The other thing is we've always, in our six years here, been good in doubles and we've never put a team in, so to have two teams is, it all came at once."

In his first trip to the NCAA tournament singles championship, Rafa Izquierdo Luque faced one of the top freshmen in the nation.

Stanford's Nishesh Basavareddy, ranked No. 15 in the last ITA rankings, defeated the NC State senior in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

Izquierdo Luque ends his senior career with an overall record of 13-15, playing most of the season at the No. 1 singles spot.

He finishes his Pack career with an overall record of 39-42 in singles play. Izquierdo Luque came into the tournament ranked No. 57 in the most recent ITA rankings.

In the opening set, Izquierdo Luque took a 3-2 lead over Basavareddy. Unfortunately for Izquierdo Luque, Basavareddy took the momentum, ending the first set on a 4-0 run.

In the second set, Basavareddy jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Izquierdo Luque showed a lot of fight, battling back to tie the set at three. The Santiago de Compostella, Spain native once again rallied, tying the set at five. That would be the final push from Izquierdo Luque as Basavereddy closed out the set with a 7-5 win.

Izquierdo Luque jumped into the top 100 ITA rankings on February 21 at No. 75 and remained in the top 100 the remainder of the regular season. His highest position of the year was No. 52 on March 21.

After his win over No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri of Texas on March 14, Izquierdo Luque was named ACC Player of the Week. This season Izquierdo Luque played 17 matches at No. 1 in 2022-23, winning six matches, winning two over top 50 opponents. Izquierdo Luque became the ninth player in program history to advance to the NCAA singles championship and first since 2021.

Up next: Izquierdo Luque will pair with Joe Wayand on Tuesday to take on Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas of Duke in the first round of the double championship.

It appears three members of the NC State men's tennis team will have to wait before making their debut in Orlando.

Due to storms around the area on Tuesday, action at the NCAA singles and doubles championships were postponed.

That means Joe Wayand, Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli will have to wait one more day before hitting the court in some real action. Wayand's doubles partner, Rafa Izqueirdo Luque, played a singles match on Monday.

Catry and Staeheli will play Alan Magadan and Sebastian Rodriguez of UTSA. Izqueirdo Luque and Wayand will play Jack Clements and Louis Delcour of South Alabama. No makeup time has been set.

For the first time since 2014, the NC State men's tennis program has a doubles team heading to the second round.

The duo of Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joe Wayand defeated Jack Clements and Louis Delcour of South Alabama, 6-2, 7-5, on Wednesday.

Izquierdo Luque and Wayand will play the winner of the Duke duo of Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas at 2 pm.

It's just the fourth time in program history that a doubles duo advanced to the second round.

The 2023 tournament was the first time under head coach Kyle Spencer that two doubles teams made it to the championship.

Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli dropped their opening round matchup in straight sets to Alan Magadan and Sebastian Rodriguez of UTSA, 6-4, 6-4. Catry and Staeheli, who were ranked as high as No. 11 this season, end the year with 15 wins, which earns them a place in the school record books.

Catry and Staeheli dug themselves into holes early in both sets and came up short despite rallies.

Wayand and Izquierdo Luque entered the championships ranked No. 15 in the country. They showed they meant business early on, dominating the first set 6-2. Wayand and Izquierdo Luque jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set to establish dominance.

They were battled tested by Clements and Delcour in the second set, but pulled away late for their ninth win of the season. It was their first win together since April 12. It was the third win this season over an opponent ranked in the top 100.

It's not the first bit of tournament success for Wayand and Izquierdo Luque. In October they won the ITA Regional doubles title in Cary.

The NC State duo of Joseph Wayand and Rafa Izquierdo Luque became the first All-Americans since the 2021, but also saw their season come to an end.

Thursday evening at the NCAA doubles championships the duo defeated Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas of Duke in their first match, but fell to Pepperdine in the second match of the day.

Wayand and Izquierdo Luque became the first doubles duo to achieve All-American status in 42 years.

"We are all very proud of Joe and Rafa being crowned All Americans from this tournament," head coach Kyle Spencer said. "Their play was fantastic throughout the tournament and what a season they had with winning the ITA regional and then being fantastic in the ACC season as well as nationally."

Wayand and Izquierdo Luque came into the NCAA championships ranked No. 14 in the nation and were named third team All-ACC.

"They both deserve all the accolades they got for a tremendous season," Spencer added.

In the first match of the day versus Duke, Izquierdo Luque and Wayand secured All-American status by sweeping Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas, 7-5, 7-6. Johns and Rodenas were ranked No. 25 in the last ITA standings, giving Wayand and Izquierdo their fourth win this season over a ranked opponent. It's the highest ranked team they've defeated all year.

In the first set Izquierdo Luque and Wayand jumped out to a commanding 4-1 lead before the Blue Devils tied the set at five.

Izquierdo Luque and Wayand were up to the challenge and slammed the door on the Blue Devils comeback to maintain momentum. The Wolfpack duo rode that wave into the second set, going ahead 2-1 early.

There was a bit more adversity in the second set. With their backs against the wall, Duke took a 4-2 lead. Izquierdo Luque and Wayand stayed within striking distance, eventually pulling to within a point (5-4). Izquierdo Luque and Wayand tied the match at five and took a 6-5 lead. Johns and Rodenas tied it at six, but Izquierdo Luque and Wayand took control in the tiebreaker set, holding on for the 7-6 win.

With their victory, Izquierdo Luque and Wayand became the first All-Americans for NC State tennis since the 2021 postseason.

The day was over, though, for the duo.

Wayand and Izquierdo Luque next faced Daniel De Jonge and Tim Zeitvogel of Pepperdine.

NC State went up 2-0 in the first set, but only managed one more point the rest of the way as De Jonge and Zeitvoegel pulled away with a 6-3 win.

The Pack regrouped and took a 2-1 lead early in the second set, but Pepperdine took over the rest of the way and won 6-3.

Wayand and Izquierdo Luque won 10 matches together this spring, and were the ITA Regional champions in the fall. Izquierdo Luque leaves NC State with 17 doubles wins. Wayand, just a sophomore, now has 16 career doubles wins.
