NC State will travel to Columbia, SC for the ITA Kickoff.

ITA Kickoff weekend features four matches at seven regional sites.

Last time out: No. 21 NC State men's tennis dropped its second straight match of the season on Friday night at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center with No.16 Harvard clipping the Pack 4-3.

Despite a strong showing from the Wolfpack in singles play, NC State was unable to overcome dropping the doubles point at the match's beginning.

Pack in the rankings: At the conclusion of the fall tennis campaign, the NC State men's tennis team had one individual and two doubles pairs in the final ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Scouting the Rams: VCU is 4-0 this season. The Rams are coming off a 4-1 win over Morgan State. VCU's Matisse Bobichon was ranked No. 40 in the ITA preseason poll. Bobichon and Rayane Stable are ranked No. 29 in the doubles rankings.

NC State men's tennis picked up its third win of the season in a strong 4-0 sweep against VCU during the first round of matches of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

The Wolfpack (3-2) was met with resistance from the Rams (4-1) throughout the entire match but pulled out the sweep thanks to some solid singles and doubles play from its most reliable players while competing in Columbia, South Carolina. After falling in its last two matches, the Pack got just what it was looking for at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend: a win.

While the red-and-white won the early doubles point, it was actually VCU who took the first win of the day, downing sophomore Joseph Wayand and redshirt sophomore Braden Shick on court three. Even though the Rams took the first doubles win, NC State didn't think twice about winning the other two courts.

The No. 38-ranked pair of sophomore Fons Van Sambeek and senior Martins Rocens defeated their Rams opponents 6-2, and soon after, senior Robin Catry and junior Luca Staeheli finished the job, beating their ranked opponents 6-4 to get the 1-0 edge over VCU.

There was no shortage of excitement in the subsequent singles round. But even with three tiebreakers and as just as many three-set matches across the various courts, NC State remained perfect in terms of match score.

Catry doubled that score early on in the round, defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-4, while his doubles partner, Staeheli, added another singles win to the tally. His 6-2, 6-4 victory put NC State in clinch position while most other matches across the venue still pressed on.

Then Shick, who's been nothing short of impressive so far this season for the Pack, clinched the match at 4-0 with his gritty 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win that culminated in a tense tiebreak.

The remaining three matches, all three-setters that could have gone either way, were stopped once Shick clinched the win.

Rocens' match against the No. 40-ranked Matisse Bobichon carried over into a third set after the senior nearly won the match in a second-set tiebreaker. Van Sambeek's match also was stopped before the sophomore could complete what was heading towards a three-set win. Finally, No. 122 fifth-year Rafa Izquierdo Luque's match went unfinished during his third set due to the clinch.

The win over VCU not only gets NC State back in the win column after dropping its last two matches to No. 13 Harvard and No. 24 Northwestern but gets the Pack one game closer to competing in the ITA Indoor Championships. To get there, though, it'll have to defeat its toughest opponent yet the No. 8 South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Pack's showdown with the Gamecocks in the second match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.

Just a day after sweeping VCU in the first match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, NC State men's tennis got a taste of its own medicine, getting swept by No. 8 South Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Wolfpack (3-3) was ultimately no match for the talented Gamecock squad, even after riding high due to the previous day's win. South Carolina (5-0) easily took the doubles point early on and just as easily took the next three singles matches to claim the 4-0 victory.

South Carolina wasted no time in the match by getting out to a quick 1-0 advantage in the doubles round. The Gamecocks defeated the No. 38 pair of sophomore Fons Van Sambeek and senior Martins Rocens 6-4. In addition, senior Robin Catry and junior Luca Staeheli fell 6-1 to the No. 1 doubles team in the nation.

The doubles round was a good indication of how the subsequent singles round proceeded. South Carolina achieved the three singles wins it needed to clinch the match as fast as it could, hustling the Wolfpack off of its home courts as soon as it got on them.

After No. 15 Toby Samuel defeated Rocens 6-1, 6-1 on court one, freshman Martin Borisiouk fell 6-0, 6-3 just as quickly on court six. The Gamecocks then finished the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Catry on court two.

Two of NC State's younger players, redshirt sophomore Braden Shick and Van Sambeek, both won their first sets via tiebreak on their respective courts, but their efforts were too little, too late in terms of the overall match.

With the loss, NC State misses out on an opportunity to advance to the ITA Indoor Championships and moves to 3-3 on the season.

Next on the slate for the Wolfpack is another matchup against a top-10 team. First serve against No. 4 Michigan at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10.

NC State came up short in an attempt to punch a ticket to Chicago for the ITA Indoor Championships.

Standing in the way of the Pack was No. 8 South Carolina.

The Gamecocks defeated NC State 4-0 on Sunday. With the loss the Pack falls to 3-3 on the season.

Doubles (South Carolina, 1-0)

South Carolina has the top doubles team in the country in Toby Samuel and Connor Thomson. The Gamecocks duo proved worthy of the top ranking, defeating Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli, 6-1 to give South Carolina an early advantage.

On court No. 2, the NC State duo of Martins Rocen and Fons Van Sambeek, ranked No. 38 in the nation, battled to the end, eventually falling to Jake Beasley and James Story.

Martin Borisiouk and Joseph Wayland trailed Raphael Lambling and Casey Hoole, 3-4, before the Gamecocks secured the doubles point.

Singles (South Carolina, 3-0)

In the singles matches, South Carolina only needed three matches to secure the win.

On court one, Toby Samuel, the 15th ranked player in the country, defeated Martins Rocen 6-1, 6-1. On court six, Jake Beasley made quick work of Martin Borisiouk, pulling out a 6-0, 6-3 win.

Catry was NC State's last chance on court two, but Thomson wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-2 win in the second set.

The NC State men's tennis quickly learned why Michigan is one of the nation's best tennis teams when the No. 4 Wolverines defeated the Pack 4-0 on Friday, Feb. 10 in Raleigh.
While the Wolfpack (4-4) put up an admirable effort, it was ultimately no match for the powerful Michigan (9-0) squad, who remain undefeated on the season. NC State fought tooth and nail for the doubles round, but after the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead, they proceeded to methodically take the three singles courts thereafter to clinch the match at 4-0.
"Tough day for our guys, we didn't quite have enough in the doubles," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "It put us down 1-0 and Michigan played a couple pretty comprehensive point. … Credit to Michigan, they never took their foot off the gas."

NC State took it to its opponents in the doubles round, playing the Wolverines close on each and every court. Despite the promising start to the round, Michigan pulled away on two of the courts, defeating freshman Damien Salvestre and senior Martins Rocens on court two 6-4 and redshirt sophomore Braden Shick and sophomore Fons Van Sambeek 7-5.
After fending off the Pack in the doubles round, Michigan took a stronger hold on the match, winning three straight singles matches to complete the sweep.
Salvestre gave NC State its most promising singles performance of the day, though. Salvestre, who recently entered the lineup due to injury, played at the one spot in his first big singles match of the season. To make things even tougher, he squared off with Michigan's Andrew Fenty, who is ranked No. 7 in the nation. That didn't shake the sophomore, however, who embraced his court one duties and took the fight to Fenty, splitting his first two sets 5-7, 7-5 before the match was clinched by the Wolverines.

Michigan's No. 42-ranked Patrick Maloney defeated Shick in a close match on court three for the Wolverines' first singles win. While Shick hung around with his opponent, he eventually lost after falling in his second set tiebreaker.
Two more ranked Michigan players captured the next two points on courts two and four. Fifth-year senior Rafa Izquierdo Luque fell in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, while junior Luca Staeheli lost in an up-and-down three-setter on court four. Michigan's 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Staeheli on court four sealed the sweep for the Wolverines, leaving Salvestre, Van Sambeek and senior Robin Catry stranded on their respective courts.
Despite the lopsided 4-0 scoreline, NC State still gave Michigan a battle, one that was apparent from its energy on each and every court.
"We're always going to compete," Spencer said. "We play one of the toughest schedules because of that. We like to say, when we turn the lights on, what do you got? We had everybody out there competing extremely hard. I think we played relatively smart today, so there's just some execution things that we could have done a little bit better."
After its tough test against the No. 4 Wolverines, NC State turns its attention to another strong team Princeton.
The Wolfpack and Tigers are set to clash on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. in New Jersey
